Title: Life after Facebook
Post by: rich83 on December 13, 2013, 12:12:22 pm
... so I removed my account a few days ago. What do I do now? Feels a bit odd not checking it every 5 mins.... but so far so good. I will miss the car related banter thats for sure, but there was too much sh*t being posted up by various people, my feed was a constant stream of "LOOK HOW GOOD I AM" posts... name dropping (especially on RIP status which is shocking) etc

So no... I have not deleted any of you in case you were getting a bit paro-twitchy

Feckin' mad isn't it... I stopped using it about a year ago, it's hard to start with but you soon realise how much time is wasted talking sh!te... now just need to scrub out the forums  :happy2:

I did the same about 6 months ago. Have lost touch with lots of people as a result, but don't miss the BS that comes with having an account. The intrusion into my privacy got too much for me and the last straw was when a map appeared on my profile page showing places I'd been photographed in. I didn't want it there and couldn't remove it so I deleted myself!

I used to mess about with the lads at work on FB a bit, as we were on the road quite a bit we used to check in at strange places we were passing and post up silly stuff for a laugh, have a bit of banter (then you'd get some distant elderly relative pass a message back via other relatives taking it all seriously as they didn't get the humour), share music etc. but that gets a bit boring after a while and goes off the boil.
But yes, it increasingly just got packed with neurotic crap from people who were either having an apparently fabulous life or used to just post up their latest woes for a bit of sympathy and then never reply to the subject when everyone asked what was wrong…

So I just got a bit fed up with it all, and instead of deleting the account I just stopped logging in. I keep it there so I can keep up with birthdays of people I don't see very often as being a bloke I'm useless at remembering birthdays.
After a few months I really don't miss it one bit and sit there now and wonder why I ever bothered...

Anyone seen the film "Terms and conditions may apply"... the data is never really deleted from the likes of facebook, they still have it - just not publically facing.

Quite funny in part of the film they catch Zuckerberg outside his house and have a chat with him, he's not too happy about being filmed and asks for his privacy to be maintained.

For me it was a case of editing the privacy settings and removing anyone that doesn't post interesting stuff. Now I only get relevant info from people I know. When I'm tagged in anything I have to give permission and there are no location turned on. No apps that have access to my account/friends lists.

I believe you suspend it and after a period of time of inactivity it gets removed.

Could be wrong though...

The posts i hate most are those people re posting somebody elses post ----you know the one that say 97% of my friends won't post but i know 3% will

I always go on a rant about it , it can't be relevant to everyone's list of friends can it !

I also log in via a different browser with some ad blocker software installed so i don't get all those adverts from bookies vodafone and a load of other sh!t !

Not to mention all the "famous quote status/pictures".... that NO ONE EVER SAID!!!!

Ohh.. and sharing a link to a "Factual" headline....... from thedailymash! Then everyone goes mental, until someone points out (for the 100th time) its a satirical website.

Can you see why I left now?

why dont you just use Facebook in the normal blokes way - check once a week, usually Saturday morning to see if there is any events or parties.

Can imagine checking every 5 mins like you said, cant imagine even once a day.

I signed up to FB back in 2007. I stopped using it around 2009 when I realised it was a crock of $h!t€ and deactivated my account. But apparently I'm still on there.

We have a Facebook account, don't really use it, don't really know how it all works TBH.

Lots of peeps telling you what they've done today etc, all very odd, I doubt even my nearest or dearest give a sh*t what I did today re work, rest or play. We use it to look at what the kids and other family members are up to.

Keep getting friend requests from people I went to school with, didn't like them then, not going to like them now.  :stupid:

It has a place in today's society I suppose.

.
Facebook is what you want it to be. You can turn off notifications from Fb Friends if you don't happen to enjoy what they post about, and you can of course delete someone from your list of Fb Friends (like richwig did to me a few weeks ago) at any time you wish.

You have a lot of control of how and who interacts with you on facebook - It's all in the settings if you bother to look.

It's no better or worse than any internet forum of communication - It's up to you to use it and control it as you prefer.

I deleted it three years ago and wow first couple weeks were hard lol. Picking up phone and realising I didn't need to.!.!. I recently logged on just through sheer boredom sat in hospital with me misses. Safe to say I deactivated it within ten minutes for the same reason I did three years ago!!! I don't wanna read all the people gagging for likes rubbish statuses no more. I do miss some
Stuff tho like keeping in contact with people and birthdays and seeing photos etc but not enough for me to have it again. I did debate a while back making a new profile just with the people I want to hear from ie family and close friends and the groups you can join. Hasn't happened tho lol Facebook sucks ass and is poison that's my view on it.

....In my case I am very glad indeed to be back in contact with some people I had lost contact with and it has resulted in very positive things such as a party in Chelsea and an open invitation to a house in the South of France and a roadtrip to the Highlands of Scotland next Spring.

I have made some very nice new friends as well, especially through belonging to facebook interest groups and also running one myself. There is much more to life than just great cars, much as I love them as well, and facebook has opened that up.

Apart from my daughter who lives with me and who is very independent, I don't have baggage such as a wife or small children etc, and so it suits my lifestyle very well for keeping in touch with people and arranging to do a wide variety of things together as and when it suits me.

Very true and I couldn't agree more. We too have contacted and been contacted by both friends and relatives we've lost touch with over the years and mine and my wife's lives are better for it.

Sometimes feel I'm a right miserable old ba5tard (45) as I'm not on or ever been on fb.

My buddy of the same age is always on there sharing what he fecking cooks...what he fecking eats and most boring of all where he's bloody been. Dull as a dull thing in my book.
I think he's actually only on there primarily to chase 'skirt' behind his wife's back.

From reading the posts in this topic it clearly works for some as a catch up and keeping in contact tool.
But for some the level of sh1te spouted by many on fb is too much to cope with. Not that I know about it.

Facebook luddite me and likely to stay that way.
And I do keep in touch with the few people I want to keep in touch with.

What we have to appreciate with SPAM, is what impact does it have on the real world?  It's the exact same thing that comes through into your mailboxes, it has to be backed up, which costs fuel to run the servers which back it up.  Each Email provider / Social Media company has to keep all that SPAM (read as sh*tE) backed up on multiple servers which require electric (read as Fossil fuel burning) to facilitate the storage of basically hundreds of Petabytes of rubbish... it's the digital slag heap.

I'm no ecomental fruit loop (far from it), but it's been on my mind recently as to how much companies like Google / Microsoft / Facebook etc. spend on keeping spam backed up; and how much that has an effect on burning fossil fuels... feck having to split your waste once a week - more than 70% of ALL email is SPAM.

Social Media aside, there are an Estimated 140 Billion Emails sent every day... so roughly 100 Billion of those are SPAM, sh*te, crap, virus, rubbish, pollutant.  Most Spam emails are below 100kb to ensure that the spammers don't overload networks, so to take that as an average... every day... 100kb x 100B = 100 Trillion kb = roughly 100 Petabytes a day of cack that has to be mostly backed up.

When you consider in 2008 the data centres in the USA alone consumed as much as 5 million houses during the same period (Link (http://royal.pingdom.com/2008/07/25/us-data-centers-consuming-as-much-power-as-5-million-houses/)) it starts to look quite mental how aggressive and scary SPAM really is to the "Real" world.

....People posting campaigns and links to sign this and that petition etc etc are probably the most irritating on facebook. I have friends from all walks of life and with all sorts of beliefs and political persuasions, some of them fanatics, but I prefer them to respect my apathy (evolved from the wisdom of age) as I respect whatever their beliefs are.

Like a lot of people say it's how you use it, I like it and must admit I'm on there a lot but there's heaps of stuff that annoy the hell out of me but I just try to see the funny side of it now and not get too involved. I seem now to go in fits and starts, I'll post nothing for weeks then my timeline is full of rubbish (normally Everton related) that I've done.
I did think a while ago about ditching it but it's a quick and easy way of keeping up with friends/family I have not only got scattered around the country but around the world.
I've recently had a clear out of people who I wasn't really friends with and totally battened down my privacy settings and must admit it's a lot better.

I have one rule that i stick by and wish to hell others would too - I'm only friends with people I'm willing to hold a conversation with, if you cant even talk to me, do one!!!
