Title: No Power, lights on dash
Post by: Nodz on December 14, 2013, 02:59:29 pm
On my way home a earlier and went to overtake a lorry, put my foot down on the accelerator and nothing happened apart from the ESP turning off and the EPC light coming on. The car now feels as if there's no turbo and just takes ages to get to any speeds above 30mph. It did do it the other night but was only going from one side of the estate to the other so didn't notice the lack of power and it was fine when I went back out to it.

I've just gone out and tried it again and the engine management light has decided to join in. Which isn't good as I'm ment to be doing a 500mile round trip weds/thurs.

Any ideas on what it could be?

I fear it could be your throttle body sensor gone bad but you really need to get the car scanned to pin point the cause.

I probably cannot add anything as I am a novice but maybe can lend some knowledge from the issues I have had with my car over the past 2 weeks.

I had a similar issue of going to overtake someone and the EML coming on and a loss of any power when trying to accelerate.

After a scan it pointed to misfire and a coil pack issue so maybe worth trying to swap them depending what the scan comes up with. My engine however was vibrating like crazy when idle.

It was then discovered it wasn't the coil packs but a pistol/valve had cracked which in the end they replaced the whole engine with a brand new one. Today they have replaced the fuel pump regulator as apparently that was the root cause to all this.

Hopefully yours is no way as serious as mine but giving you my 2p worth  :happy2:

My first thought was throttle body..

I was looking at the list just trying to find someone who's about when I am. Trouble is I can't get to a garage until the end of next week due to work commitments and going Catterick. There is another car I can use, just the timing is annoying.

Really hope it's not the engine :scared:

Hopefully not as mine seems like an extreme case so most people on here and at the garage said likely coil packs so I am assuming most of the time with this sort of issue that is what it will be if it reports back misfires.

Throttle body seems likely.

i'm 99% sure its the throttle body.

Have the same issue and symptoms with mine. you can still drive it but don't boot it until you get it sorted or it will just go into limpo again.

Still best to get her scanned to be 100% sure.

IIRC, your based Essex way so i'm a bit too far to do a scan for ya being in South London.  :sad1:

Thanks for the offer MVB, yeah I'm essex and according to the VCDS register everyone is a fair drive from me unfortunately.

At least if I do use it to go to catterick at least my MPG will be good, so every cloud and all that lol.

Has anyone got any idea of how much is be looking at if it is the throttle body?

Sounds like the same problem I had and it was the throttle body failure

Let's not get ahead of yourself, you've not even scanned it yet - Take it one step at a time.. Forums can be the worst for things like that! lol  :jumping:

Lol I know, forums can turn the simplest problems and turn them into something major. Just need to get it scanned and then go from there.

I drove it a couple of times last night and the EPC light vanished and the ESP started working again but the EML was still on and then the last time I drove it they all come back as I accelerated to get out a junction.

Thanks mate, that's about what I was thinking it would be.

How does it drive Nathan?

When my TB went, the car was misfiring all over the shop and wouldn't really drive more than 5-10mph - there was not doubt what the problem was. it also sounded like a tractor.

There was just no way it could be driven in any normal manner, and it was a real pain to get the car to my mates garage as I couldn't drive more than 10mph (and the only route is a 50mph duel carriageway).

I called Alex and he correctly identified the 3 errors that would be logged whilst i was scanning it.

Just wondered if there different levels of TB failure???

And the price quoted seems about right - a disgusting amount

Hope you get things sorted soon mate  :happy2:

Only 4 miles from me if you go to catterick..could arrange a mate of mine to scan it for you

Below 2k revs and 30mph you wouldn't even notice anything was wrong unless you was going for a gap but if I boot it there's just no power there. As you say there must be different levels of failure.

I didn't drive it all yesterday then this morning drove it to work and the EPC light was off and ESP was working but the EML was still present. On the way in I was driving conservatively and seemed fine up to 2k and it was fine so let it rev to 3k and could feel te power was there but didn't try it as I knew it would throw a fit and give the errors again.

Thanks mate, I don't get to Darlington til 10pm on the weds and then I'm not sure wen I have to be at Catterick for or how long I'll be there as it's my mates passing out parade. Thanks for te offer :happy2:

Vote Throttle Body... notorious for dieing... replace with version Q or later (if there is one), don't bother with any earlier versions (nod to VRS Alex).

I got mine 2nd hand for ~£70 and fitted it myself, instantly better.

But obviously have it scanned first. :happy2:
