So, I took my car, (Mk 5 Ed 30), to the VW dealer today to get serviced and MOTed. It came back with the bee sting aerial on the passenger seat. Apparently this was to facilitate the service wash. Anyway, on screwing it back on, the display on the screen had changed from it's usual red & black to a dull grey and blue! The techs couldn't fix it there and then so it's booked back in on Wednesday for a full diagnostic check.
I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this. Is it an easy fix that I can do myself to save taking it back to the dealer? Or is it likely to be a routine job for them.
I'm a bit worried that it might end up costing me money through no fault of my own ...

Find someone with a vcds cable and change the colour back in the long coding for the head unit.

Thanks for the info. On looking at the display again it actually looks quite faded - the colours aren't vibrant and the text is quite difficult to read. It definitely wasn't like that when I dropped the car off this morning...
-
Keep in mind that it may have just broken. Just because it broke while the garage was doing an oil change doesnt mean they did it.
However they may have pressed too hard while dusting/cleaning your interior damaging the screen.
-
That's true - it would just be an amazing coincidence that it happened on the day I left it with them and came back to find the aerial in my passenger seat!
In terms of them pressing down too hard on the screen, I did also notice a small shadow on the left hand side of the screen right next to the radio button which had been changed to a different station to the one I was listening to.
Hmmm ...
-
They test drive them after a service, maybe the guy liked radio 2 more than god.fm that you had it set to?
I'm obviously not saying they did it or didn't do it but people need to be open to the fact things break lol
I'm only saying this because in my line of work "you touched it last" now it's broke is voiced far too often lol.
-
... Update: so this morning I go to check the display and .... nothing, nada, zilch! I'm guessing that won't be fixable with a cable and some coding now?!
Worried it could now cost me some serious money and I'm about to put the car up for sale too ...

Screens are replaceable. I have never done one would recon I could.
Contact Eddie nl on here he has prob done a few
-
These charge £200 +vat

So I would definitely try Ed.

Thanks for the tip off guys. The only difficulty I think is that I'm in Glasgow and I think Eddie's down south - is that right? Is there anyone closer who could supply and fit?
From what you're saying it sounds like I might not need a whole new unit, just a new screen. How do you know? That would be better as it would obviously cost less.
-
You could put a bid in for this and get your local Audio/radio installer to swap it over:-

Or if your handy there's a how to on the RNS510 for hard drive replacement which shows all you need to know and do it yourself!

They are simple to remove, screw driver and a credit card got mine out :happy2:
Ship it to Ed, he'll ship it back fixed!
-
Thanks. So how do I know if it's just a new screen I need or a whole new unit?!
-
That's where Eddie-NL comes in - he offer a quality service for a very fair price but insured postage of that type of item is expensive there and back!
You must have a local radio repair agent of some form where you live?
-
post a pic so we can see what it looks like
-
I've taken a couple of pics but don't know how to upload them. I could e-mail them to you if you PMed me your e-mail address but I realise that might not be forum etiquette...
-
Upload them via photo bucket.............................. :happy2:

OK - I hope this works. Hopefully the pics will magically appear below ...

Do my pictures help to identify the problem ... ?

its broken
-
Maybe, but it is still working - i.e. I can get sound out of it.
So, back to my original question - is it just the screen or the whole unit?
How can I be sure which as one solution is clearly less expensive than the other.
-
I'd try to discuss this with the dealership since it might not be an easy fix for you. I've had the dealership fix small damages that happened to the car while it was in for service and they were pretty ok with it. This might be trickier than a simple scratch but you could bring it to them and see what they say.
-
Thanks Chris. It's with them at the moment so hopefully hopefully it can be resolved quickly, amicably & successfully ...
I'll let you know how I get on.
-
So, not surprisingly the dealer has told me I need a new unit and that's it.
Although the display is quite faint the unit is otherwise still fully functional. Someone else has told be I might just need a new screen or it could be the whole unit.
So I'm on the lookout for someone trustworthy in the Glasgow area who can successfull the diagnose the problem and rectify it at a not unreasonable cost.
Anybody know of anyone near to me in Glasgow?
Thanks.

It's going to be guess work without swapping the screen for a new one and seeing if it's all good from there. Could just be the light strip in the LCD. Still need a new screen.
-
Common fault in laptops - new screen will sort it
This is what you need to read then ask yourself can you do it?
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f78/rns-510-hdd-replacement-ssd-swap-diy-60984.html
The job will be easy if you've got the tools, time and the replacement part.
-
looks like the baclight has died to me as the lcd is still working in the pics
-
I've had a search and see no one selling any back lights for the RNS510 - May be you could strip the front panel further? But the smallest part I can find is a screen.
-
This is worth a read

He fixed it with firmware!

Sorry to hear about the dealership washing their hands on this. Its surprising to see how picky RNS can be with media or even firmware. If its a firmware issue it should be fairly easy to resolve though. According to the person that had the issue in Doyle's link, the screen went dark right after the update. It's worth checking your current firmware version any way you can.
It looks like this is a common issue with RNS, ebay is full of repair services. Here's one i came across while browsing ebay, but there's a lot more.

I love this forum - you guys are the best! Thanks for all your replies.
Thanks doylebros for the links - I was quite daunted initially when I saw the pics in the first link but I presume I only have to do up to the bit where the screen gets taken off?! I got lost a bit in the jargon in the second link...
Re. a firmware upgrade, how do I find out what firmware I've got? And how do I get the upgrade? This sounds promising although I've also heard about firmware upgrades "frying" the unit ...
Sounds like I could try a firmware upgrade first then, if that doesn't work, try a new screen ... ?
-
For my money it's your screen, as the other people's problems only started after they upgraded their firmware!
-
You should be able to reach firmware/hardware info through Vag Com. There's always the possibility of bricking the unit during an update. Here's a link to a recovery CD that might help in that case. Good luck!
