After doing my Subframe Bolts today, I've finally come to the point where I want more room under cars to work on, I've currently got a 2 Tonne Trolley Jack from Halfords but it's range is a bit pokey, I literally had it maxed before putting under Axle Stands and my nose was only a couple of cm's off the subframe (no nose jokes please, lol)... so can you get a nice jack that really gets the motor up, or is it a case of ramps / lift / digging a big hole in the ground?
So what do use guys use / recommend?

A lot of people rate the Arcan trolly jack at Costco - I fancy one myself, just keep waiting for them to go on 'offer'

I replaced my fuel filter a while ago and my trolley jack couldn't get the car high enough for me to get under comfortably with axle stands. I have ramps so just reversed the car onto them and had plenty of room.
Ramps are cheap, about £25 from a motor factor (or £60 in Halfords if you're feeling flush:laugh:).

Cheers guys, I was looking at SGS stuff, any good?: http://www.sgs-engineering.com/hydraulic-jacks
I haven't ruled out ramps although never really considered them either tbh,.

I have an arcan from Costco. It's light as it's aluminium, great for lowered cars and rises to good height.

Problem with ramps is getting your car onto them.
Very precarious.
You're better off using chunks of wood to be honest unless you want to spend £200+ or buy a used one from a Tyre place (they generally have loads of them).

Tis a nice looking jack... tell me where do you guys jack it? RE-enforced sills and then Axle stand in under the plastic covers? As my Axle stands won't fit next to my trolley when using sills to lift.... heard some horror stories (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3313972#post39766994) of using the jack point under the plastic covers too... or do you use the rear of the wishbone for the stands..?

I jack up from the jack point on the sill and put an Axle stand on the suspension arms or on the jack points as well (jack up at an angle so you can still access it)
