Title: Phillips DS2 from VW...
Post by: Eddie07 on December 18, 2013, 09:59:16 am
...got a quote from VW for the above for £65 + VAT.

Quick google search shows that thats a ball park figure but can get them off ebay for 30-40...

has anyone got some from the internet cheaper and can vouch for them?

If it includes fitting, I'd pay the extra :happy2: I know nothing about the bulbs sorry.

Rich Wigley has a friend in Germany, I think he gets them at a decent price.

Opportunity for a bulb upgrade?

I got two brand new delivered within the UK for about £52 this year on ebay, same Philips part number as what I took out and easy to change.

I would buy the Osram ones personally.
I'd never buy half price advertised bulbs on Ebay  - So many fakes around it's unbelievable and the beam pattern from crap DS2 bulbs is TERRIBLE!
I'd happily pay £150 for a pair of decent bulbs knowing they're 100% genuine.

Just to echo what Jay has said - be careful of fakes. Some copies are very hard to tell apart from Genuine bulbs.

The ones I got have an excellent pattern and are definitely not fake. VW don't make the bulbs.

The ones ("DS2") I got have an excellent pattern and are definitely not fake.

I wonder if the ones you tried, I'm assuming you tried them Jay, were Fake ones... anyone have side by side shots - been thinking about how long my 8 year old ones have left.

I looked at them when swapping, it was the same one. D2S is the fitment type.

Are the original Osram or Philips?  I'm so ham fisted I'd probably get the garage to fit just incase one broke.. but for £25 I'd probably do them myself, at the back of my mind I thought they were about £100 each.

I would be very very very very very surprised if you actually have genuine phillips  bulbs for under £40.

I'd buy these Xenarc ones personally... although from a reliable genuine source.

My xenon chap has gone AWOL.

lol typical...

So just had a phone call from VW Oakmere in Northwich. The conversation went something like this...

"Hi Andy, your cars ready for collection. We changed your back light for you as well because that was out. we spent 1.5 hours on your car so were having to charge you for 1/2 hours fitting so total bill is £121.00 all in (incl VAT)."

Erm...but you said it was free fitting, and I didnt ask you to change the back bulb....

"yeah but it was quite tricky and we had to take the headlight out to do it, which involved taking the bumper off and we spent quite a lot of time on the car"

...but you said it was free fitting...how can you ask me to pay for something that you said was free...(10 second silence)

"I can't ask my mechanic to work for free"

...then you shouldn't have told me it was free fitting, then I would have been able to make an informed decision. When I walked out of the garage I had a bill of just over £70.00.  now your telling me its £120 odd. What kind of organisation you running there pal lol - actually laughed out loud down the phone.

"But.."

No buts mate, just because its a gti, and I wear a suit doesnt mean I'm made of money. Nor does it mean you can change an agreement which you and I both had when I left.

"Ok Andy, I'll credit the labour charge for you, don't worry about it, come and collect the car when your ready"

THE F**KING CHEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can tell you how mad this conversation just made me.

Is there a name and shame board for garages and alike, VW Oakmere (Northwich) need to go there if there is....

Haha the blind cheek!!

Although to be fair I think the labour charge for free bulb fitting is up to 1 hour maximum
However I agree with you entirely so nicely done. A lot of people would have sucked it up!!

I got some Osram D2S Upgrade Cool Blue Intense Bulbs, a little more expensive now i think, as i think i paid £80 or so delivered for a pair last year.

wouldn't risk fakes off ebay. I've used this company for years and theyve been spot on!

Its situations like this as why I don't go to the dealers for servicing.

Independent Specialist all the way for me  :happy2:

Richtung, I took my car to VW for a coil pack recall.

They then presented me with a list of "urgent work" needing doing

- Cambelt and waterpump (as I keep my service history in the drawer at home rather than in the Glovebox...)
- Rear springs (corroded apparently, they weren't)
- Lower control arm bushes (yes these did need doing)
- CV boot leaking (it wasn't, the rubber was slightly perished it wasn't (and still isn't) leaking anything.
-  Full service (oil, filters, etc, as I keep my service history in the drawer at home rather than in the Glovebox...)
- Brake fluid change (as I keep my service history in the drawer at home rather than in the Glovebox...)

Total cost was like £790! And they were like "here's a list of things that need doing when would you like to book it it...?" expecting me to bend over and do it

I don't think so, twats!!!

I'm running the Osram CBI now, did have Silverstars before and they were less white, almost halogen colour; but they were BRIGHT!

CBI is a good balance between brightness and colour.

How do the CBI compare to the oem xenon bulb?

How do the CBI compare to the oem xenon bulb?

They're whiter in colour, similar to the new Mercs and BMWs as they use them as standard IIRC? Brighter than OEM too.

I have CBI's as well. But fitted clear lenses for E46 projector off the retrofit source and it did the job. Probably 25-30% better beam pattern compare to genuine lens.
