evening all.
have just fitted mk6 led number plate lights.. nice easy swap but have a error on the dash ( knew i would) but the new led lights don't work? will they once i get it plugged into vas pc and get the error light cleared and it reprogrammed?
sorry for all the noob questions, it seems alot harder to search on here then other forums i use regarding info
-
Yep, the error code will prevent them from illuminating. So once code cleared they should be fine. :happy2:
I've got them fitted to mine and the occasionally throw a fault but just flick lights on / off and it clears my fault.
-
Just fitted mine , they worked from the off but had fault on dash and mfd , fitted kufotec adaptors yesterday now they are all ok
Sounds like you must have blown the fuse if there is power to the lights they should come on even if the ecu is reading a fault

The lights will work even when the fault light etc is on , the ecu reads the resistance of the circuit it wont cut voltage going to the lights

Ok stand corrected! Just as said sometimes mine don't illuminate and show fault, switch on / off and fault gone and lights work..
-
just gone out for another look.... if i start the car and turn the lights on the number plate lights come on for approx 4-5 seconds then switch off!!
so assume the ECU is reading there not working and cutting the power
-
Are yours the genuine vw lights ?
I have a mk6 so went the oem route after reading loads of problems with after market ones , fitting just the light brought the fault messages up so i got mike tfsi to re program them via vag com but there was no option to do it so after more research the only solution is the kufotec adaptors ( which are expensive but oem+ quality or alter the wiring as per the 2012 model golfs

I dont think the ecu is able to do this

-
well if i go for them adapters thats £82 just for sodding number plate lights!! i hope other mods i have planed wont sting me this much
-
Thats just what i thought , i paid £37 for the lights then another £ 33 for the adaptors £7.50 of that is postage but i got them in 24 hours
They do look good though

The 18 led ones on ebay are far too bright. !
-
Thats why i didnt want to got for the ebay ones! I have two resister packs at home off my bike so i will solder them in tommrow and see if they work :happy2:
-
I was going to do that but mine just un plug now so if/when i sell the car i can sell them and get my money back , seen some lights and adaptors in ebay £100 !!
-
I bought these and they are perfect fit with no error and they are very bright. Bargain at £20

WHEN you sell the car in about 6months :P Got a link to the kufatec resistor thingys?

my problem is im a bit of a OEM snob..... plus i have all ready got the lights so may as well make these ones work lol
-
I have units similar to those (mine are from mylitco) and I paid £25 and they come with a years warranty -
I'm all for OEM but the MyLitco (or similar ones) are better, cost less than the OEM units themselves and don't need to buy wiring adaptors (at the same cost/slightly more!!!) to make them work. £70-80 is silly money for number plate bulbs sorry...
In VCDS there is a setting to turn off the bulb out monitoring for certain lights (eg indicators, front dipped, front main etc). That may provide some ability to remove the bulb out but won't stop the error of them not lighting I believe. Worth a try anyway!

-
On the Mk6 byte 18 was different to that and didn't have the box to manually change the binary to one that is known to turn off bulb diagnosis
There was an option in byte 17 to enable PWM LED number plate bulbs but it made no difference :(
-
Argh :(
That's a bum lol
-
Well mine cost £80 but i m loving them lol, mike , 6 months ?
The 18 led ones are quite handy to if your reverse light blows or you need to see where you ve been ! :signLOL:

As if you and Candy spent £80 on bulbs...OMG !!! I could think of a worse way to spend money. The ones i bought are PERFECT !!! and very bright.
Dont get me wrong i like OEM but £80....you guys need your heads shaking.

Most of the aftermarket LEDs look far from OEM in how bright they are. To many, that makes them look tacky, cheap, 'boy racer' call it what you will.
The good thing is the thread tells anyone else looking to do this, both options are available; a bright white error free (and good value) or a more costly but factory fit, error free solution.

The cheaper, brighter (OEM look) are error free , not a hint of errors. Like you said, everyone to their own
-
I've bought the ones Ross linked last night so when they come I'll throw a pic up on the thread.
-
My after market xtec or mtec (can't remember) ones;

Fitted m6 leds to our Golf ED30 and they was plug and play error free
-
That's good to know cause I wouldn't mind 'upgrading' to oem LEDs
-
Fitted m6 leds to our Golf ED30 and they was plug and play error free
They are genuine vw mk6 led number plate lights ?

Exactly what i was going to ask

well i got mine working today with the help of a resister i had in my tool box! its for led motorcycle indicators and seems to work fine
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F150x100q90%2Fc%2F34%2F9fvp.jpg&hash=e303b936f0cc984c7c3da1766781d2e6af3f60e3) (https://imageshack.com/i/0y9fvpj)
-
They look good , did you just connect the resistor in parallel with the light ?
-
i wired them like this
http://www.matstrad.com/resistors_tech.php
and i only put one resister on one light and it all works  would of thought i needed to do both lights
-
Can you not turn the bulb warning light off on vag com????
Not 100% sure
-
As long as the circuit resistance is equal to the 2 bulbs you ve taken out it should be fine , just watch out cause the resistor could get quite warm
-
Its well insulated and shrink wrapped ;-)
-
Needs a heat sink ideally and mounting a solid surface lol not wrapping up

thats how it came from the manufacture, its designed to go under motorcycle fairing so assume they wrapped it in insulation for that reason! plus the ones from Kufatec come heat shrinked :P

No they are nt the cable is heat shrinked the resistors are exposed and they are wired in series so they wont ne carrying the load a resistor in parallel would

Well, I got the ones from eBay in the post today (gtiross's link) and I'm very please with them!
Here's the pics.

Can't complain for the £23 I paid for them to come next day!
-
Yep they look mint. And i can confirm they look even better in the flesh, no glare on the plate at all. :congrats:

No problem mate, i would rather people buy these than waste £80 on the OEM ones
