Hi guys,
I have a rns 510 B unit in my 2005 gti.
Because I have a old E version can gateway (power drain issues) I placed the Josi's modified fw2760 firmware on it a couple years ago (with the vuci 1200).
Worked flawlessly.
This month I decided I want Dutch voice commands (installed a extra microphone) and so I needed fw3xxx.
Found http://www.rnsfirmware.com and downloaded modified fw4020 for my B unit.
Installed the firmware. But noticed my rns510 kept rebooting itself after a 'cold' startup.
So startups from standby (<30min) went good but with >30min the rns keeps rebooting a couple of times (you only see the vw logo screen) before it fully starts up.
It looks like the longer you wait, the harder it gets to fully start up. So for example if I come back to my car the next day, it can take several reboots/minutes to start correctly.
If the rns510 managed itself to start correcly, it keeps on working correctly during that trip. Untill you leave the car for more than say 30 minutes.
I downgraded back to fw2760 but no luck.
Downgraded to fw1200 but still no luck.
Tried fw's 1300, 3810 and now 4120 but still no luck.
Tried separate vuci1200 cd and recovery cd but no luck.
With fw4120 the reboots won't happen as often and only happen when I left the car for a couple of hours/a day, but they are still there.
What's wrong?
Is my rns510 bricked?
Is it something in the gateway?
Hope you guys can help.

I can't find any logic/pattern in how long the rns510 must be switch of vs the cycles/times it reboots before it fully starts up.
For example: Yesterday I used my rns 510 at 20:00 hours. This morning (11 hours later) I drove to work and the rsn510 started immediately/booted the first time.
Very strange. So sometimes it workes like it should and sometimes it needs two or more reboots!?

Did have this on mine but mine would not start up at all, just reboot all the time. Mine was down to the firmware that had not taken correctly. Downloaded from a different source and all was good. Hope this helps. :happy2:

Thanks. But I already tried several fw's like fw1200, fw1300, fw2760, fw3810, fw4020 and nof fw4120.
Also tried different types/brands dvds and cds.
Still no luck...

Did you try a format or the recovery CD from vwnavi.com? Burning firmware at the lowest speed and on different media?

Yes I've tried the recovery and the hdd format files.
Tried several types of media and always burned on slowest speeds :-(
Strange thing is that the reboots don't always show up.
For example: yesterday morning it started fine and also 9 hours later when I drove back from work, no reboots at all...

I'm assuming you've tried changing everything else back to when your unit was functional, i.e. replace Dutch voice commands/maps with the previous ones and disconnect any extra devices (mic?) you've installed. Did you try other electronics modifications in the car?
It does sound like software but software's crazy. Corrupted drive perhaps? Have you tried an unmodified firmware version just to check if reboots continue? I mean the ones that drain your battery, so you should only use them temporarily. If you do that, i'd suggest installing the f/w version your unit came with. Then update with the modified version you were using initially.
Also does your RCD always start up in the same screen (i.e FM, CD or Media) or it depends on what you were using last before shutting the unit down? Maybe just one of those modules produces the problem. Just taking blind shots btw. :innocent:

I've tried everything to change it to the settings where everything worked 100%. I disconnected my mic, disconnected my kufatec, changed settings in vcds, etc. etc.
I've tried fw1200 and fw1300 as unmodified versions but experienced the same reboots with them. The original firmware for my B versions was fw0900, but couldn't find such and old version on the internet (and I bought it 2nd hand in 2011 with fw1100 already on it, and then updated to the modified fw2760 which worked great for years untill I did the fw4020 upgrade recently).
Is the can gateway also 'updated' when you do a fw update? Because you see those bars with all the parts that are updated (like radio, hdd, etc.) and one of them is called 'gateway'... Or is this only concerning the part inside the rns 510?

No, the update is confined to the 510 unit.

Thanks, so another new type can gateway wouldn't solve my problem...
So it has to be software related.
Found the original very old fw0900 firmware so I'm going to try to downgrade. But guess this doesn't solve it, because I already tried to downgrade to fw1200 and fw1300 without success...

The rns510 rebooted one time before starting up this morning.

It's only a thought but could it be a electrical connection problem at the back of the set?

That is always a possibility but the reboots instantly occured after I did my first attempt updating to fw4020. So I guess not...

Yes, good chance Ed will have seen this fault before.
However, you've put a lot of effort in to trying to correcting this, if it's a firmware fault I would of expected one of the installs you've been through to of corrected it! That's why I wonder if there's another fault which coincidently happened a the same time as the original firmware install?

Eh, I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it. So what's next? There was a DIY about replacing the OEM drive with an SSD, but it included taking the RNS down to bits.. :scared: It might be better to have it repaired after all.

I.know ur post was a very long time ago but im digging deep.in this.forum to.find the same problem as myn...
This.issue arised on the second day of buying my car and i got a qoute of 360 to reslove this.
Would you reccomend i.try this myslf and if so what is the procedure. And what.equipments will.i.need as im an amature to.all this... How do i update the firmware seen as my screen wont even switch.on?
I hope.u can help because im still recouping mg expendtiures spent to.purchase the gti and this.is the last thing i needed. Pure bad luck i guess seen as it was working fine.as i.drove back after purchasing it...
