Title: Harz's GTI R-Tech stage 2, Recaros and Audi FB steering wheel.
Post by: Harz on December 23, 2013, 08:13:50 pm
So had my GTI for about a week now and absolutely loving it. It's a 2008, 3 door, manual, it came with 19" calibre wheels already on it (which has 235s and I think I need to change for 225s maybe coz they scrub a bit over dips/rough roads) not sure what j or et yet, haven't had time to get one of them off to have a look.
I managed to give it a quick wash and a coat of Collinite 845 yesterday so I thought I'd take a couple pics. It needs a proper detail, but as I don't have a garage that will have to wait until after winter. Anyway here's the pics

Thanks  :happy2:

My brother has got me some team Heko wind deflectors for Xmas.
Need to do a bit more research as I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to performance mods, but I'm thinking along the lines of air filter/exhaust and a linear remap.
Eibach's sportlines.
I'm thinking of changing the head unit, maybe an Alpine with built in sat Nav and Bluetooth/iPod connectivity and amp and sub.

Car looks nice! Not a massive fan of the wheels - If you like them that's all that matters!  :happy2:

There are so many mods you can do performance and looks wise - Search the forum  :happy2:

Cheers... I hear what you're saying about the wheels. They were left on by the previous owner. When I first saw the autotrader photos I was nearly put off because of the wheels, but when I saw the car in flesh they didn't look too bad, the pics don't do them justice. I personally think they're a little too big and would prefer 18"s, but they will do for now. I may spray the spokes a different colour for now.

Made a start on fitting my head unit today. Not overly impressed with the facia. Also didn't do my research so didn't realise the aftermarket stereo will stay on even with no keys in the ignition  :ashamed: ordered the CTSVW002 adaptor off fleabay. Just hope I'll be ok just detaching the face off the stereo for now.
Will get some pics up at some point. Ran out of daylight so didn't take any yet...

Have to agree with the comments on the wheels, not overly keen, but each to their own.

They're quite a bit lighter than the 19" Calibre wheels that were on it and the difference in weight is noticeable when driving. Well pleased with them  :happy2:

If all goes well I should be fitting my Eibach's tomorrow afternoon

Just a couple of small updates to the car. Replica BBS centre caps and BBS dust caps off eBay. The seller claims that the dust caps are genuine, but didn't come in any BBS packaging so I doubt it. I like them anyway and they seem like good quality. Just hope they don't get pinched by some little scroat like most dust caps I've bought in the past have been. I've even had the black plastic ones nicked before!...

Cheers. Black does look nice. The swirls can be a pain though. Gave the car a polish last week and managed to get the swirls out, but there are a few scratches and stone chips that really show up.

Loving them  :happy2: kinda wish I had them installed one at a time instead of all in one go, just so could notice the difference each component made, but yeah over the moon with them.

This GTI foot rest plate/cover arrived today as well. Haven't fitted it yet. Realised after ordering it that there was a group buy on the forum for these and could've got it cheaper :ashamed: ah well too late now.

Sorry for late reply haven't checked this for a few days.
Mine are RHD. I made sure they stocked RHD ones before I ordered. Check eurowagens website/eBay they sell them in RHD and are based in uk. I ordered mine from Germany as eurowagens didn't have them in stock when I ordered.

Haven't got any pics of beam pattern. Mines not too bad, but I think they could do with adjusting. Will go to local MOT place to get them aligned at some point.

I took a couple snaps of my Hella Projectors beam pattern. I'm no expert so not sure if it's correct or not, but like I said I'm going to take it my local MOT place to get checked and adjusted if need be. I don't seem to be blinding any oncoming traffic (not getting flashed anyway) and have good visibility of the road. I'm using an 8000k 35w H7R HID kit.

On the lowest setting using the dash adjuster.

Water beads up well and runs off the glass when you drive. Works better on the front and side windows than the rear. Do still get water spots drying on the glass, but I'm used to it coz my last two cars never had rear wipers.

As the weather is starting to turn worse I thought I'd give the car a bit of a clean and a coat of wax.

Title: Re: Harz's GTI R-Tech Stage 2.
Post by: Harz on October 09, 2014, 10:40:35 pm
Took the car up to R-Tech

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fii120%2Fharz535%2FIMAG0400.jpg&hash=8c21d7bedd8a09e2908a2370e60cd76a57192173)

Unfortunately on the drive up to R-Tech my radiator somehow worked loose and the back of the fan rubbed on a coolant pipe and wore a hole in it causing a leak.
The guys at R-Tech managed to wedge a bit of wood to hold the rad in place and despite the coolant leak they were able to do the remap

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fii120%2Fharz535%2FIMAG0402.jpg&hash=c4d0b9e7a7bd5c244fba8cd0863d4455c4d1b326)

Had a Stage 2 remap and achieved 270HP and 355ftlbs of torque

"Before" dyno run.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fii120%2Fharz535%2FIMAG0418_1.jpg&hash=68dd613f8d69a1056c477f73bc91be7c54623eba)

"After" dyno run.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fii120%2Fharz535%2FIMAG0419_1.jpg&hash=82db3d22603d9bf5b643fd4eea9f1db884231e04)

"Comparison" dyno
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fii120%2Fharz535%2FIMAG0420_1.jpg&hash=b47148fbee104acb9b8810ba4a2c2d3093cb9569)

Peak results
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fii120%2Fharz535%2FIMAG0421_1.jpg&hash=f883398b43d983580de9748107d2ffaec1e8ecc2)

It was then on to the test drive and man did I have an ear to ear grin on my face.
Unfortunately the coolant was leaking pretty bad. It was looking like I wasn't going to be able to make the drive back to London. The lads at R-Tech tried their best to get me the parts and would've done the repair to get me home, but were unable to get the parts.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fii120%2Fharz535%2FIMG_20141008_185128.jpg&hash=35eb532786e74c365c4dce5f688a557401f2be28)

Luckily the RAC mechanic was able to fix the coolant pipe.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fii120%2Fharz535%2FIMAG0415.jpg&hash=e947fa44b4a05dc7dc0c983e9583f7a5e7e7065e)

The drive home was amazing :D

Just waiting for parts on order from VW now to sort out rad/coolant pipe.

Saw this on Niki's FB yesterday - great result

How did the rad get loose? Did you use new/correct thread bolts to hold it to the intercooler? There's not a lot of clearance from the fans once you have the new intercooler in place.

Cheers the whole rad/intercooler/aircon assembly has come loose. I'm not sure why. Changed the intercooler about 6 weeks ago and I've not had any problems with it, but it somehow worked loose on the drive up to R-Tech. I've not had chance to take the front end off yet to check. I've ordered new rad mountings and screws from VW in case they're damaged. Just waiting for the parts to come and I'll check it out. Got a bit of wood holding it in place at the mo. Not ideal, but at least the car is drivable.

Just a small update... Been a quiet couple months. Ordered New mounts/screws from vw for my rad assembly, but haven't had time to take the front end off. Hoping to have it done before Xmas.
Car is also booked in at AKS tuning for end of January for Helix clutch kit and a LSD  :happy2:

A couple weeks back I finally got around to taking the front end off to find out why my rad/Intercooler assembly had come loose. The screws had completely come loose and were gone. Checking the new mounts the holes aren't prethreaded, so the first time you put the screws in they create the thread, the only thing I can think of that happened is when I put the screws back into the old mounts I must have messed the thread up somehow and the screws worked loose. Anyway the new mounts are in, the rad/Intercooler assembly is solid and there is adequate clearance between the rad fan and coolant pipes. Glad it's sorted and no longer have a block of wood holding my rad in place

Fitted my coilovers. Very happy with them. They aren't super low, but from a practical point of view they're just about right for a daily driver (in my opinion).

Are the coilovers all the way down?

Nice wheels, I had a set on my old Mk4! They look amazing in the sun but have a really annoying channel behind the spokes which water sits in after it's rained. I ended up keeping bit of cut up sponge in my boot to soak the water up before it sprayed all over the rest of the wheels.

The Rears are all the way down. The fronts are nearly all the way down, can go down about another 2-3mm. Thanks for the tip on the wheels  :happy2:

Great looking GTI! Like the way it sits on the coilovers :) were the S3 brakes just a straight swap or do you need brake lines too? Also are they the R32 rear lights...i like them alot  :happy2:

Got them from Germany, I forget the name of the seller now. There's a thread on this forum about them somewhere. I know there's a company in the uk called eurowagens that sells them too, but they didn't have them in stock when I got mine.

I got braided lines for mine and had to get S3/R32 ones so I would say you need the hoses too.

So today I left the car with @vRSAlex (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1981) at AKS tuning for organic Helix Clutch kit, new OEM DMF and Peloquins LSD  :happy2: can't wait

I picked the car up from AKS Tuning on Friday. Was so happy to have it back after driving a Hyundai i30 rental car for a week, that I hated.
Treating the car to some V-Power for the drive back down the A1
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi262.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii120%2Fharz535%2FIMG_20150130_144611_1.jpg&hash=457327834256062b8eb814e4dcdc584ab2a133fd) (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/harz535/media/IMG_20150130_144611_1.jpg.html)

So I haven't really put the car to the test yet to see how the clutch and LSD are performing, but have had a couple quick blasts and the car seems to drive a lot better.

But of course it couldn't go completely smoothly and I got yet another screw in one of my tyres.

Your car has come a long way, nice work! Best colour too :happy2:

I have a few questions regarding your headlights.. where abouts is the sidelight located? Is it next to the indicator like the genuine ones? Do they have a working shutter for full/dipped beam like the genuine xenons?

Alright sweet, am I right in thinking that the Depo Xenons have the sidelight in the same position as the regular halogens? I'm unsure what Xenons to get, same as yours or the Depos!

You can adjust the height of yours with the control from inside the car right?

I'm not sure where the side light bulbs are in the depo ones. I think I read in a thread that they are in the high beam reflector like the halogens.
I can adjust mine from the inside of the car. The only thing is a few people people have asked me about my ones and when I've tried to find a link for them I've not been able to find them anywhere. Don't know if there was limited stock or not. They are made by hella so would've thought they would be easier to come by...

Cheers. Alex at AKS said he needed the car for a couple of days. As I was working for 7 days in a row I left it with him for a week. He billed me for 8 hours labour so I'd allow 2 days minimum. Total bill was just over £2200 that includes clutch, DMF, release bearings etc, LSD, gearbox fluid and wheel alignment. (And labour of course)

The seats were retrimmed by Edge Automotive. Need to get a few bits of my interior retrimmed to match to finish it off.

Have to be honest, not a fan of the interior. Doesn't work on the colour of car. Rest of the interior isn't bright enough and no ties to the exterior, for example wheels etc - looks like you've just bought a set of bright seats (which i guess you have) and bolted them in lol

not being harsh, so please don't take it as an insult or dig or anything. just my opinion. although the steering wheel is very nice!

The quality of the work looks good but they just look completely random sitting in the car, but I'm not a fan of bright interiors anyway they cheapen the look IMO

I think if you do some exterior parts in the same colour like the brakes and grill stripe it may look better

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course and as I said in my original post... "Need to get a few bits of my interior retrimmed to match to finish it off. " so I will be looking to get the leather sections in my door cards, arm rest, gear knob and gaitor and also maybe the handbrake cover retrimmed in blue. I know the colour won't be to everyone's taste, it is a bit loud and lairy, but I do like it (and I'm the only one that has too   ) the pictures are from my phones camera and the colour is slightly oversaturated for some reason, the seats are slightly paler in the flesh. As for the exterior I had thought about the stripe in the grill as it needs freshening up anyway because it's looking a bit faded. I've been trying to decide on a colour for my calipers as I currently have black S3 calipers on the front and red GTI calipers on the rear. I guess blue would be the best thing to go for now to tie in the interior.  :happy2:

Sorry for the late reply. I didn't realise anyone had commented on the thread. I've actually just bought a RS6 Avant so I probably won't be doing anything else to the Golf. I've got to look at the diverter valve and try see if I can get some of the dings sorted out and then it will probably be going up for sale.
