Title: New door skin & painting/blending.
Post by: Mk5Dom on December 27, 2013, 02:05:45 pm
So early hours of this morning I had a nightmare. Coming back from being out with the mates, totally sober.

Come around this corner, tree down blocking 3/4's of the road. Tried to avoid it, missed most of it but still made contact, but hey it could have been a lot worse.

So I've been to VW and they quoted me 1100 with VAT for a new skin, painted and blended. Ofcourse I'll be getting other quotes and weighing up my options but it'd be nice to know what I should be paying. I don't want to claim on insurance, being only 20.

Your views and experiences would be appreciated. I feel so sick, it's horrible.

Considering just getting a whole new door.

The door skins on the mk5 are bolt on. But when you buy a new skin you still need to glue the brackets on the back.

A cheaper option is a used door. In colour preferably then you won't have to paint the back side. Then its a case of stick it on and paint the side for colour.  Factor in a new molding too around 40 quid

Expect to pay around

Paint 250
Labour 150

Both plus vat.

The above is done o. Audatex and as such is a full blown ins quote.

Hth.

Jake

Ps it's a two day job

Find out which paint shop the dealer uses and get your own quote
maybe replace the parts yourself :happy2: just get them to do the painting/blending

I can't see from the photo's but can't a paintless dent repair company do anything? Or is the paint damaged beyond a good detail?
It wouldn't hurt to get a quote. Also mention that you can take the door skin off for them!

Another option is one of the 3 doors currently on eBay (one at £95, one at £120 and one at £130). Not sure of your paint code but the £130 is stated as LA7T (In Sheffield though and I guess from the quote you are in Oxford).

£119.99 - London:

£95.00 - Wolverhampton

£130.00 - Sheffield (£35.00 postage) - LA7T paint code

Good luck with it.

Cheers for all your input and help fellas.

Just come off the phone to the guy in Sheffield. Going to take a drive up there early doors tomorrow morning.
My car is indeed a LA7T.

Only reason I'm swaying towards the Sheffield one is because the Wolves one has different moulding, cba with fiddling with all that and the one in London mentions a few scuffs. Dont mind a little drive too, just a shame the car looks worse for wear.

I am so annoyed with myself but at the same time I feel really lucky because if we'd have gone straight through the tree it'd have been a different story. Wouldn't have been able to live with myself if anything would have happened to my cousin. Just shows anything can happen at any time.

I've seen worse removed by a paintless dent removal guy.

My foam lance shot out of the pressure washer across the roof, leaving some crease dents, after a few hours and £40 all sorted and i cant see any marks left behind  :happy2:

Any decent bodyshop would tell you whether those dents would come out with the people they use , find a vw approved bodshop and get their paintless dent guy to have a look  :innocent:

Obviously my opinion counts for nothing lol,

I run a very successful bodyshop, were well known off ukmivs, we do a lot of mods in the vw game, and the subaru side,

We have people come from all over the country to have us do work on their cars, we also reworked ray Ard golf after shamster made a complete mess off it,

I'd like to think I know a bit about cars, and try to pass my knowladge o. To other users so they don't get ripped off

Just for the record. That quote is from my dealers approved bodyshop.

Going to have a look at that door in the morning, worth a shot!

All the best. I hope it isn't a wasted journey.

The Sheffield one looked the best to me. As you say the Wolves one has the different mouldings and appears to be sat on a concrete floor! I hate when they do that, pretty sure it will scratch and rust.

I have looked previously for a new skin for mine. Someone stole the sat-nav from it on the VW forecourt before I bought it. They told me they had left it open overnight and opportunists moved in.
It was only after a few months that I noticed the screwdriver mark in the rubber, nicks in the top of the door card and deep scratches in the laquer. Barely noticable but I know it's there, so need one that is top notch to even come close to the one I already have. Had a brand new Nav in it though!  :happy2:

Despite the horror of it being on top of this old van, the door is immaculate. Less chips than my current door, hasn't been dragged along concrete and wasn't removed by a retard with a flat ended screwdriver.

Very happy with it, well worth the trip. My love for the Golf goes on, excelled on the M1, so comfy, so relaxed and 56 mpg!

Where did you get the Boot tray from?

Hoffman's. Dutch company that sells OEM stuff. VW discontinued them.

Just had a quick look and it looks as if they've sold out.
I was very lucky to get mine, that was about a year ago and they only had 2 or 3 at that time. Came in its original box too!
They seem to be quite popular over the pond on the US VAG forums.

I think I'll be taking mine with me to the Mk6 when the time comes.
PN is 1K0061178A, good luck, you never know one may pop up somewhere.
