Title: Just that little bit lower?
Post by: G40will on December 27, 2013, 08:19:13 pm
I've watched roh-echt's youtube video of cutting the front lowering springs and I'm tempted :fighting: to do this myself as I just want it a little lower on the front.

The video is of some H&R springs being cut and I have eibach's  will this make any difference? I know it's not good practise to cut springs but I'm not interested in coilovers as I don't have the budget for comfortable ones and I like the ride I get with the eibach's

So has anyone done this to eibach springs and have any advice?

Here's the video link...

Let us know how you get on in the MOT  :chicken:

Yes I expected some of this so well done...

Your mot tester must be thorough to remove your springs and check if its a factory crop or a diy cut at the seat. :happy2:

I can only imagine the ride will become very bouncy by cutting the springs and obviously a mot failure aswell, just save and buy some coiles you won't regret it

Change the springs or buy different coilovers all together. FK Ak streets go nice and low.

What other springs are available that have the ride comfort of eibach's but go a little bit lower, like I said I'm not after going really low and the poor ride of cheap coilovers is not an option.

I'm literally after about 10-15mm lower just on the front.

Apex springs go down to 40mm IIRC. Look really good on the mk5, but will shorten the life of your dampers

I don't see the problem with this - if you only want to take 10 -15 mm off ride height.
The ride quality should not be affected by this amount. You are not reducing the spring by a significant height. If you reduce the effective amount of spring by 40 - 50 mm it may well do.
Sure, the best way is with springs wound to a specific amount of drop, but on a limited budget ........

Exactly! Did anyone watch the video? It's just literally the last coil on the bottom to reduce the ride height by 10-15mm

Cutting springs is NOT advisable. It's what pikeys do on Corsa. MOT failure and as mentioned insurance would invalidate your policy if they found out.
Up to you as to what you want to do (or not as the case may be). Spare coilovers come up for sale all the time on Edition for under £100.

Are you trolling?

This is the fear as the mk5 gti becomes cheaper and cheaper, people with no regard for insurance/mot or safety come along. I don't know you so can't say if you fall into this category but you'll be a lot closer should you cut the springs.

This is a bad idea. It's a poor workaround to achieve a small goal.

If you cannot afford to get the car lower legally or correctly then you can't do it. Simple.

Ok. I'm starting to wish I didn't bother asking this now!

I'll take all your input on board and leave my springs alone as you've all basically slated me for asking a question on a forum where there's a link to a video made by a fellow member :stupid:

What do you mean trolling?

Also I don't drive a GTI a drive a wanky uncool tdi, so there's a bit more ammo for ya!

coil springs are made with the right tolerence for the rebound over bumpy roads etc and when you start cutting the coils down it affects this a lot--Its your car and if you want to cut them it is up to you but come mot time it will fail so to save money by not doing the job twice just buy iowering springs or coil over set

Thanks for all your advice guys but can I just ask, how many of you have watched the video?

I'm not interest in cutting the coils them selves! Just what roh-echt did on his video...

I would just cut them mate, your not going to die, its not going to get picked on the MOT and its not going to make ridiculous amount of difference to handling. If you do it and decide you dont like it you can always get some new springs, the eibachs aren't ridiculous money.
