Title: BT Infinity or Virgin Media
Post by: Degudodger on December 28, 2013, 09:21:55 pm
After nearly 13 years we are looking to move away from Virgin Media. Our two options are LLU, but is out of the question as the maximum speed i could get is 10th of what i currently receive so my only option is BT Infinity. Looking to get Infinity 2, which after a quick FTTC check, the maximum speed we could get is 60mbps which is pretty good.

The last 9-10 months have seen a continued degradation in service with extended periods of severely throttled bandwidth and outages lasting 2-3 days with no explanation other than the generic excuse of "service affecting issues in your area" mean i have lost confidence in VM and their ability to provide a stable service. That coupled with Tivo (rebooting boxes, recorded random stuff i have no interest in etc) have me wanting to jump ship.

What is your experience of BT Infinity, is it better/worse than Virgin Media fibre?

Very odd. Mine records the occasional repeat even though series link is set to new only, but since turning off recommendations it seems to not record random stuff.

It's still not as good as a Sky box though.

It's the only option for me if I want fast broadband sadly. So having the whole package makes more sense than paying £30+ for just broadband.

It started when they reflashed the Tivo box firmware, the box was swapped out for another which improved things but it still records things i didn't request.

I would go FTTC but don't go BT. find the cheapest, check topcashback to see who is giving the most cash back and is cheapest over the term you sign for.

BT/talktalk/plusnet are pretty much the same when troubleshooting an issue and they all use the same cables so I'd say reliability will be the same.

If you want to pay more to speak to a human when something breaks sadly these companies are a dying breed...maybe zen?

DONT GO WITH SKY (personal opinion)

I've got VM and my parents have infinity and the only differences I can see between the two are that the BT Home Hub 3.0 is better than VM's superhub and the uploads speeds infinity give triple what you get on VM.

We went for VM for the package of tv phone and broadband was better than bt at the time. Now BT's tv service is getting better it might become an option in the future but I would miss TiVo.

We went with BT when we moved into our house 9 months ago.  We've got  BT Infinity 2 and get around 75mb download and 19mb upload through Speedtest.net and always see downloads at around 9-10mb/s.  I download ALOT (roughly around 15-20gb a day) and have never once had my speed slowed down whereas when we was with Virgin at the old place they regularly capped our speed at peak times and when we exceeded the fair usage policy.

In short I'd actually highly recommend BT Infinity :)

Do you get that on demand with BT ? Is at as good as the virgin one ?

I might change as well because of the free Net Fitbaw on BT

Was with BT, on infinity 2. Hated everything about the service. Customer support was crap, kept getting continual outages, when the service was working then I would get fluctuations in speed (even as low as 56kb...yes KB! for a week) ended up having to pay t-mobile extra as it was easier using my iphone for a connection!
Then I moved to Virgin media and have had no issues, no capping, no throttling etc etc. I HATE the tivo with a passion (crap interface etc) so jumped back to sky for that. Here's a result of one of my recent utorrent download rates:(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F13%2F12%2F29%2Fbyduhaju.jpg&hash=6215d8246f6619e724537f9d8a61451f84672062)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.tapatalk.com%2Fd%2F13%2F12%2F29%2Fra2e9uqa.jpg&hash=e03861ce75a36c5aace3a2c1a3fca28295f3acb1)

Grrr internet has been done since 9.30pm yesterday, our TiVo box keeps going into standby and VM have billed me incorrectly AGAIN this month, I'm now even more driven to jump ship.

Looks like it's going to be Sky tv and Infinity2 unlimited which with the current offers of combined £220 quidco, £100 Sainsburys voucher and £100 credit on our sky account means it works out to be cheaper than what we are being charged by VM.

Right. I'm off the Costa Coffee to leach of their free wifi :)

I moved to BT Infinity from Talk Talk (lying, cheating X@~*s!).  We have HomeHub4.

Speed is good, customer service is OK-ish and the YouView box is awesome.  I particularly love the ability to scroll back seven days on the TV Guide and watch past programmes.  There was a problem whereby we couldn't pause or record programmes on certain (Internet) channels like BT Sport, but this has now been fixed.

7/10 from me.

3mbps is still enough for me to stream HD content off Plex over 3G or remote wifi.

On virgin media. Get crazy download speeds pretty much all the time even at peak. And 3-4mbps upload which is plenty for me.
