I promised myself I'd never make a tyre thread...but here goes.
I'm due 4x new tyres in 225/40/18.
In the past I've used falkens, but since they're sh*t, I want to step up into the premium market.
What do you guys rate these days? Contis? Eagle f1s?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :drinking:
-
Come on dude!!! :signLOL: :signLOL:
Eagle F1v2 OR Michelin SuperSports if you can find them in XL flavour!
or.... if you want something better. Yoko AD08 for partial idiot behaviour!
-
Just fitted a pair of goodyear eagle f1's..... seem much better then my conti's
-
I heard Nankangs were quite good? :innocent:
I run Sessantas and love them. I've used them exclusively for years and won't really change to anything else. To be honest most decent tyres days are all fairly equal up to 8/10th it's the last bit that differentiates them.
Richard only uses Goodyears and I think he invited the CEO to his wedding.
Most "new" / "latest generation" of tyres from Bridgestone/Dunlop/Goodyear/Michellin/Vredestein (they're on the Vorti now) are all within 2-5% of each other through normal driving, (Generally speaking, there are of course stand out models in each category). That being said there are track based tyres which are AWESOME in the dry but terrible in the wet/winter. A good place to look is TyreReviews, but take it with a HUGE pinch of salt. As some people on there unfortunately have no idea about tyres "I had Sunnews on my 911 Turbo and they were awesome what are you lot moaning about!"

Ha thanks boys!
Just had a thought..... I'm currently running 215/40s.
Do you think 225/40s will fit?

Tyre choice is pretty slim pickings and £10000000000.
It seems the only sensible choice is new alloys!
-
Or raise your rear 15-20mm?
-
did some one mention tyres :signLOL:What make you after Nick--is these

You will fit 225/40s on the rear with additional camber without issue at all.
I have 215/40 fronts and 225/45 rears (17s) as I needed the 215/40 to clear my bag on the front. Because of my genius plan I now have the pleasure of RANDOMLY (it does it like once every 3 or 4 ignition cycles) where the differences in rotational diameter of the wheels confuses my ESP and so any time I go over around 40mph where the percentile differences gets large enough, it randomly triggers the ESP so you have to turn it off, stop the car, do an ignition cycle and then carry on your merry way.
No thanks. Would just get 215/40 all round next time!!!

Personally I like the looks of the JKtyre Ultima Sport but as they are selling out across the country I would consider the lesser brands.

I've been using Hankook Ventus V12's and have been very pleased with them. Overall grip is good. Excellent in the dry but come unstuck a little in straight lineaacceleration. But I do have a million torques. Alex had these on his Vrs and I have never experienced handling like it. Obviously he has a few more handling mods than me but thought I'd give them a go and have been impressed.
-
I had V12's on my Leon FR and they were OK!
In the past I've had Continental Contact Sport's which were good in the dry or wet but useless in the damp and wore very quickly.
Dunlops have always been good for me in the past.
But the Goodyear's F1's I have now have been very good in any condition and the wear has been pretty good so far. They ain't cheap though!! :scared:

I'm running sessanta's at the mo but michelins are my favourite tyres at the mo. Pilotsports 3s for all wet and dry or super sports for summer :driver:

Great service from this place, prices seem cheaper than mytyres and often happy to price match most other places. :happy2:

My experience was similar with the V12's, Matt, until 3mm or so. I don't know how you found them after that, but the grip seemed to fall away quickly after 3mm of tread left. I saw Alex a few times over the period of having them fitted while he ran them on his vRS and he seemed to find the same thing :happy2:
Vote for Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's for me, I don't think I'd buy anything other than a Pilot Sport PS2 or PS3 again for a while and they're worth a bit more. I'm impressed (yet again) as an all rounder.
-
Goodyears on my ED30, very happy with them so far!
-
I've got vreds at the moment and to be honest, I don't really rate them at all they are decent in the wet but pretty average in the dry. They came with the wheels I've got and were brand new so I'm just going to run them until they are done.
Previously I've had the contis and I thought those were a good tyre, however I think I'll go for the supersports all round this time if I can source them otherwise I'll be going for the f1s as I've not run those in the updated design and they seem to be getting good reviews
-
I've always had Avon zz3s. Not really a premium tyre but I like them .
They are quite soft and offer good grip wet/dry but don't last the long:)
Had nankangs on my a3 tdi sport and the slightest hint of moisture would have them spinning. Bloody things wouldn't wear out either as they were effectively plastic!

I'd agree, good tyres, not a fortune either. Not so forgiving in the wet i think. But as with any tyre to a degree i suppose.

supersports you wont find a better road tyre

I rate the GY ASY2, particularly in the wet although I am interested in the Pilot Super Sport which appears highly regarded.
For 235/35/19 fitment, GY ASY2 £183 per corner vs £212 per corner on Black Circles as of today (Fitted).

Decision made....
Michelin Pilot Supersports :happy2:

Surely in the wet they will be worse than the Eagle..

The super sport is a summer tyre mainly designed for dry conditions. I have the PS3 fitted as they have better wet handling and braking than the Super Sports. In Britain we have more wet/damp weather than dry so I make sure I buy tyres to suit. These super sticky sports are okay but get some rain and you might as well have fitted budget tyres from the level of grip you wont have.

Michelin claim the SS will out perform the PS2 in the wet.

It's complete nonsense that there no good in the wet, I've ran lots of tyres and these are by far the best in both dry AND wet

GYF1v2 are pretty good in the damp...

I'm going from my friends Lotus Exige having them fitted and various reviews saying they have poor performance in the wet. The Super Sports may have better wet handling but it isn't as good as an all season tyre, which are designed to drive better in the wet and damp. In the dry the super sports are fantastic but in the wet were very slippy and didn't inspire confidence in my friends Exige. There were no issues with the car as it had been set up correctly.
The Super Sports are classed as a summer tyre and when they designed them didn't have wet running at the forefront of the design. I cant find the article I read about them on line about the design stage of the tyres. If you read most independent tyre reviews they all say the same that the tyres performance is let down by its wet ability during aquaplaning and curve tests. Thats why I opted for the PS3's as they grip well in dry and wet and out perform most other tyres in both conditions. Although not a true performance tyre like the PS2 or Super Sports, the PS3 are a fantastic tyre for the money.
-
I have recently fitted a set of PS3's and I am more than happy with them. For me, it was a toss up between the PS3's or the GYF1v2's. I'm just a regular driver who doesn't push the car at all. I don't think I would be able to tell the difference between the 2 personally.
I'm glad that members are recommending decent branded performance tyres as opposed to £40 ling-long ditch finders!
