Title: My 2007 Tornado Red Mk5 ED30 DSG!
Post by: N8KOW on January 04, 2014, 05:11:54 pm
It’s a new year so a fresh start n’ all that. I wanted to do a build thread for my new car as I never did it with the old one. Sold my A3 back in October, after 5 and ½ years it was an emotional journey and learnt a lot! It’s funny how I don’t miss it at all now, as when I think back it was a never ending saga.  I always in search of another mod, always another problem to be fixed. It got very tiring towards the end and hence the change! I found air ride was more of a ball ache than a pleasure and after a while the novelty wears off. So I wanted a completely different approach with the next car. Here’s the A3 on one of its many sets of wheels throughout its life.

I wanted a fast hot hatch with DSG so the only real choice for me was an Edition 30. They’re at great prices now with a lot of spec for the money. I found this beautiful ED30 via this build thread - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,68916.0.html.

It wasn’t actually for sale, I pinged the owner a PM asking on the off chance if he wanted to get rid. It must have been fate, he told me he had a MK7 GTI on order so we agreed a price and the deal was done. The car was over in Ireland, so I went to look at it prior to buying it. Met up with the lad (one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met) just make sure all was sound and the car was in superb condition all still on factory paint. So I picked it up early November after a very long day she was home!

So what did I buy? It’s a 2007 (07) Tornado Red Mk5 GTI Golf Edition 30 with 42k on the clock.

I didn’t drive the car for nearly a month as I had to get it insured, MOT’d, Tax’d & Insured, then I was waiting for the UK plate to go back on and then my private plate. Luckily because it was originally a UK car I only had to pay a £55 registration fee. The process was quite easy and if the right car came up in the future I would definitely buy one from Ireland again, flights from Ryanair were cheaper than the train from Manchester to London!  Let’s make a start!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F02-WheelsOff_zps2b9de51d.jpg&hash=069a9bba863f21e98e11a3fcb3673ac8a3a460ea)

Old tyres were removed, the wheels in a little need of cleaning and sealing ready for the winter months.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F03-TyresOff_zps79cec5f2.jpg&hash=26533a19a6420425da1c3a376ae01aa680f94690)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F04-WheelBack_zps37399a92.jpg&hash=275033c789c75a5783c0ba24039275c4b02bfa75)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F05-DirtUpClose_zps484a3cb8.jpg&hash=15bb3f3146982d86c18c90eb3d5327ad959edfd5)

Next thing was to get new tyres fitted, the MOT showed the fronts were near the legal limit and with the backs only having 3mm. I thought it was wise with winter approaching to get 4 new ones. Opted for 225/40/18 Goodyear Eagle F1s, the previous owner had run them and with great reviews online wanted to try them out again.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F06-BrandNewBoots_zpsd980fae8.jpg&hash=e6e1e48e0d4dfee02830030328aff7933d9050da)

Got these from www.lovetyres.com, they were cheaper at the time for camskill; I always find it best to shop around for tyres as the prices seem to fluctuate quite a lot.

Got the tyres fitted and the wheels were given a well needed clean.

The wheels were then sealed with Carbon Collective’s Platinum Wheels.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F09-PlatinumWheels_zps43bf803a.jpg&hash=09da2e5ed614dae956d610a0ad669c54105efc19)

This will give them the armour needed for the UK roads and also a lovely glossy finish.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F10-GlossyFace_zps26269e2b.jpg&hash=561a443229b628fc3fbba8f1d9eca08fd69f6eb6)

Wheels were then fitted back to the car & I proceeded with cleaning out the catch can.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F12-DirtyCatchCan_zpsb6f0912f.jpg&hash=750e59039e49d10a233c18cbd0d85e278603519a)

Car was then rolled outside for me to give it the first detail, such a nice feeling when you wash your new car for the first time to learn all the lines of it etc.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F14-BeforeClean_zps1243acd9.jpg&hash=89afc4d3d00bad55d83636a8e1ccffaae7e82b31)

Car wasn’t that dirty just general grime; it had been detailed previously and was very well looked after by the previous owner. My main aim is to carry this on.

It was nice to see Platinum wheels doing exactly what it said on the tin!

Car was washed, de-contaminated etc then brought inside for claying which obviously needed doing.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F24-ClayBar_zps8e2cccb6.jpg&hash=7033130058880a8bd58f6657581a90a7cb233c67)

Once the car was clayed and re-washed it was time for some finishing touches. The exhaust has been very well looked after so came up good.

Was pleased with how it was looking now, paint is in very good condition considering its almost 7 years old & there aren’t many swirls, I will tackle the few it has after winter.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F42-BeforeampAfter_zps407a4dcb.jpg&hash=40e0fb6c9022846f47b6454f10d135b204332bf4)

I could tell the alignment was out as it was very skippy under full load. Always worth getting your car aligned, few times a year if possible.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F43-AlignmentWasNeeded_zps0d920819.jpg&hash=46fbd25ae373094bbc75b164ca2302830ad8b55e)

It sorted out the skippy issue and drove so much better afterwards. I then treated myself to a new keyring which pretty much matches the seat centres.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F45-Keyring_zpsb9463fce.jpg&hash=32a1a057f278205ec3479c0cc208564db6d90aec)

Hit a mini milestone.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F46-MiniMilestone_zps27097d96.jpg&hash=3515a55bf2788517c49edddb13aeb1349a2af579)

The next thing to be addressed was a service! Car was nearing 7 years old and just hit 43k so I got Cambelt & water pump with all tensioners, fresh DSG oil & a minor service. Andy Hatton @ VW Altrincham looked after me, what a top lad he is!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F47-ServiceatVW_zpsf571e749.jpg&hash=dfe0408d11ac4561b64024e895cbef15ea216af4)

Then just before Christmas I booked in the first “mod”. I’ve spent a lot over the past month on maintenance but I think it’s so important and should always come first before Modding. Stopped in to see Nigel & Dave at BCS Automotive and am I so looking forward to getting a Powervalve exhaust on the car, booked in for 24th Jan – I cannot wait! If you have not heard of them, give them a look up here – www.powervalve.co.uk

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F48-BCSBookedIn_zps94af0630.jpg&hash=4334298e06331ffb9697a7d45435a29a2b2b4ee3)

So that’s pretty much where we are up to so far! I’ve got quite a few plans for the car over the course of the year. These include:

New NGK Spark Plugs
R8 Coilpacks
Rev G Dumpvalve & New Cam Follower
BCS Powervalve Exhaust
Auto Specialists Induction Kit
Shark Performance Stage 2 Remap & DSG Remap (Aiming for 320bhp-330bhp)
Fully Polybushed
H&R ARBs 28mm/24mm
S3 Lower Arms with Superbro Ball Joints
Coilovers of some kind (AST/Bilstein but most likely KW V3s)
Another set of Pescaras refurbed in Gunmetal & a set of Federal RSR Track tyres
Auto Dimming Side Mirrors (with Aspherical Passenger Side)
MK6 Chrome Headlight Switch & Window Switches
New Front Rubber Mats & New Rubber Boot Liner
Possibly MK6 Flat Bottom Wheel
Possibly front end re-spray and touch ups of minor blemishes around the car

I’m sure that list will chop and change but that’s pretty much what I want to achieve for now. A nice useable road car which is comfortable, refined with a bit of fun to drive in very good condition.

Any comments or questions welcome.

Thanks for reading

About time you got a thread started! It looks like you have picked a really nice example. I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses.   :happy2:

That's a great read - cheers for putting up the build thread from scratch   From when I was thinking about an ED30, the original owner's posts of this car really swayed my decision!

Great spec, and love the future mod list. Just one question - looks as though you have tinted your rear number plate? Did you use lamin-x for this - just asking as I think it would tone down the yellow plate on my steel grey!

Looks stunning to be fair, nice work!

Got the following from your list on mineon mine (with v3)
Fully Polybushed
H&R ARBs 28mm/24mm
S3 Lower Arms with Superbro Ball Joints
Coilovers of some kind (AST/Bilstein but most likely KW V3s)
Possibly MK6 Flat Bottom Wheel

Very nice additions to the car in my opinion you won't be disappointed with those mods :)

Thanks very much for all the comments guys, and sorry for the lack of updates! I don’t want this to be a build thread full of nonsense so I only try and post in here when there are worthy updates. Well here is what I’ve been up to since January.

Not long after I got the car, I had an image of it lowered on 19” CHs. I knew that I needed to get rid of the silver wheels as gunmetal/anthracite would make the red pop more. I really love the ride on the factory Pescaras and didn’t want to ruin it. It helps that rubber is abit cheaper in an 18” too.

So the original wheels were sold, I sourced a scabby set of Pescaras and refurbed them in Audi’s gunmetal. Love the finish and the colour, slapped some new centre caps in for good measure.

Love the finish you can get from powdercoat.

Wheels fitted and car given a wash.

Next mod on the list is the favourite thing I’ve done so far, Exhaust! I went for this exhaust purely off recommend off the forum. Every time an exhaust thread was mentioned, there was only one company which was came up “BCS Automotive” They offer 2 systems a “Sport” and the All Singing, All Dancing “Powervalve”. Basically its boost controlled so off throttle it’s slightly louder than stock and on boost it sounds like a Rally Car. So you don’t get any drone like you do with some exhausts.

I cannot explain how amazing it sounds; the DSG parps are insane and so addictive. DSG + BCS are what you need in your life.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F60-Exhaust_zps67944ca7.jpg&hash=ad2d03b2b36add81d38d1154782e5b64515fdb58)

Sealed with Platinum Wheels for good measure.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F61-ExhaustSealed_zps040a1c12.jpg&hash=737a02cfeb94f53341e46bd416fde352862fa812)

Some new goodies arrived from TPS (I love new parts)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F62-NewParts_zps946902c8.jpg&hash=ac2f02816b7fcc7cc002b222129ad4a4ff47f400)

Out with the Rev D DV and in with the Rev G. The old one was in decent condition but I wanted to refresh it with all the other engine bits to get it running as best as I could.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F63-NewDVs_zps4bc01532.jpg&hash=c6856ccab0b6f184bf2f6fa98880f6c649583fa2)

Changed the Coilpacks for the Red topped R8 ones and put in some NGK 8’s, as you can see, my old ones were a little “roasted out”.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F64-CoilpacksnPlugs_zps4eaf5049.jpg&hash=5322cf5babeeb9177f8e99348fbbaacb06686391)

New Cam Follower also, they cost so little, and so worth changing every 5k or so.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F65-CamFollower_zps6459c550.jpg&hash=0f20c17571ef1539fb9b0af1f8360fd4d5a5b121)

Car drove really well and smooth with the exhaust and these little bits, quite abit quicker too. Next was the main overhaul of parts that I had been collecting not long after I got the car, I had been buying bits slowly and aiming to do a little bit at a time but it ended up that it all got fitted at the same time.

So here’s the goodies:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F66-NewComponents_zps1eb794d9.jpg&hash=23a0f2dccf7756bfa9383efe6ac1f7d384fcdb35)

KW V3s
H&R 28/24 ARBs
S3 Alloy Arms
SuperPro Adjustable Balljoints
Full Polybush kit
New OEM Top Mounts
New Consoles
New Droplinks
RS4 Return Valve
Loba HPFP

I had bought and fitted an MTC Intake, and with the fuel pump fitted it was running a lot smoother! I was dying to get the map on, so once all the suspension components were fitted I got it fully aligned.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F67-Alignment_zps57c2e328.jpg&hash=1b25358cd48af2fa1b089d62a04e222e5553a28c)

Was dying to get the map on, and when I did boy was it worth it. At a recent RR day it made 345bhp & 409ft-lb, I’m sure I’ll map the DSG in the future and tweak the map for more powers, but it was driving really nice, lovely smooth power.

Some wonderful person had also keyed the car, so we had the joy of sorting that out.

I then removed the winter wax and put some sealant on the car instead, Zaino was my choice. I’m so glad I got Tornado Red one, such a lovely colour when clean.

I got some cheap stick on paddles from eBay, which are actually pretty good! Well worth the money.

I spent the past week touring Europe for my 30th Birthday and managed to squeeze in a trip to the ring!

Managed to fill up with V-Power Racing across Germany, nice having 100 RON!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fs10tyg%2FED30_Build_Thread%2F106-VPowerRacing_zpsf727fa43.jpg&hash=bd6a1749631705aa766a6289684b1855e22b3678)

So far running Stage 3 power, the worst tank has been 240 miles, and my best on the trip was 422 miles, which I was well impressed with.

So that rounds up where we are upto thus far. I’m really happy with where the car is at for now, and I’m in 2 minds whether I want to take it any further.  Going to drive the car as is for the summer, do a few more track days, but I feel the need for a Golf R, whether it be Mk6 or Mk7. Time will tell.

Thanks again for reading.

Great updates N8 - enjoyed that read of what you've been up to!

Car is looking simply superb - sad to see the keyed panel, but glad to see you managed to sort it ok!

How did you find your brakes performed at the ring?
