After some coilovers just for aesthetics.
On a bit of a budget (I know that will drive some of you crazy lol), but don't want to spend no more than £400!
So ideally after some cheap coilovers that give a good drop and aren't crazy harsh, even though the GTI is just a weekend car.
Seem some JOM and FK Street ones, but also seen some rating them and some slagging them off.
Any ideas? The less I spend the better ideally (ideally for me... not for the car - I know, I know)
-
In the market myself right now aswell with 19's coming..
Was looking at JOM but think I'll get AP's..rest are out of budget for me plus overkill as I won't be tracking a sootchucker...lol
Very good reviews on both of above on the net
-
I was in the same boat and ended up buying fk streets and to be honest cant really fault them, they dropped mine lovely and still got loads to go on them
-
So JOM, APs or FK streets.
Best place to buy? EBay?
Anyone else with any of the above and can vouch for them?

To be honest it's not that bad atall on a motorway drive it's smoother than standard it holds the roads a lot better, round town they are slightly harder but not to the point it annoys you.
-
I also have FK streets and can't fault them at all. They can be a bit rough over speed humps and rough roads but other thank that they are great for the price.
I'm quite low on 19's and have around 12 threads left on the fronts and on the rear I'm all the way down with the adjusters in.

Be gone for fk silver lines best of both worlds for the budget as the aps wouldn't drop anywhere near low enough but horror stories put me off Jom and streets, not a lot around for silver lines so took the gamble!
-
Around how much should it cost to get your coilovers fitted? :popcornsoda:
-
I got my fk silverlines fitted for £100 by my mate
-
If you want it low with a decent ride I'd get these personally
http://www.gnjmotorsport.com/v-maxx-coilover-suspension-kit-volkswagen-golf-5-gti-2.0t-fsi-09-03.html
We run them on our Caddy and have a few customers with them and they stand the test of time better than the non stainless FK kits. We had a customer come in with some JOM's fitted for 8 months and they looked like they were 10 years old, hence us not selling them.

Here are my JOMs (only got a pic of the rear shocks and springs unfortunately) over a year after them being fitted, about 17 months in this picture.

JOMs are very good for the money.
FK AK Streets go lower. JOMs ride better. JOMs also come with a 2 year warranty. FK's only come with 1.
Stainless steel strut bodies are nice to have but the majority of rust is just cosmetic, the most important thing is the threads which if you apply copper grease and tape them up then you'll be fine for years.
That's all it is on the budgets. I from DPMPerformance.co.uk - Damian is a very good guy, I've dealt with him for years and always been a top lad. They will also price match (if not beat) any other prices you can find.
-
Sorry to revive this thread, I am also looking into getting coilovers for my Jetta.
I have been running my B12 sport line kit since nov 12 and love the ride and handling (purchased from Graeme @GNJ) and I want to keep this ride but drop the car another 20-40mm and have the flexibility to tow approx 1800miles a year (trailer tent no more than 650kg) I also want to keep my VZ's ET44 225/40/18 tyres.
Picture is of current stance on the B12 kit.
My budget is around the £700 mark.

Some have suggested Spax RSX, KW ST-X and FK Konigsport which are all around my budget.
Any advice is appreciated in this minefield!!

why not h&r ultra lows?
my brother has some for sale, they ride great and go as low as you want :happy2:
-
You're not going to get another 20-40mm on the front without running narrower tyre sizes and rolling your arches...
You have pretty much the choice of the market this side of the KW Inox line / v2/v3

Thanks jaffa, i have PM'd your brother but I would prefer newer kit.

Thats what I figured Jamie which is why i included the current tyre sizes (the fronts were new in Feb and rears have 6mm) What size would you recommend?
Choice of the market was not the feedback I was looking for, more what experience that people have with the suggested recommendations. I know there will be the age old debate but feedback non the less.
-
I like my kw v1s. 215s or 205s depending on how low you are
-
Thanks Joe, thats the feedback Im after. :happy2:
How do they ride if you drop them to the 65mm?
-
Ride is good, obviously firmer but nothing horrible. I dont think you can tell its on coilovers. My fronts have 1 turn left to go down and the rear has no adjuster in so its at the lowest.
-
I would go for 205/40.
Problem is on a 8 inch rim you're kind of stuffed either way.. you'd have more clearance with an 8.5 believe it or not... #fitmentissues lol
As you say people will try a coilover and love it and go mental over it.. that's the only coilover in the world, etc etc..
PERSONALLY I'd go for Apex RDX, they're like £480 or so, they go lower than you'll ever need and are a high quality construction with great driving characteristics. They are defo on the side of racecar so are a bit harder but then again, that's just what you would be used to (I assume) with lowered cars. It's not uncomfortable anyway :)
But like I said you have the choice of the market, except JOMs, APs and KWs don't go low enough.
-
#fitmentissues lol
Thanks Jamie I will take a look at these, i am fairly sure that if I go lower than 60mm then i start needing the chassis notch.
I just want the car to sit lower and level (on the arch) and still have the flexibility to raise the rear when i do tow, get the family in and without ruining my spine with the 20k miles that i do a year.
Poss group buy anyone??
-
Nah you'll be fine to about 95-100mm which you won't be able to drive around at anyway! :)
-
C*ap Im gonna have to get more tyres :sad1:
Need to look into 205/40's then, any recommendations?
-
Michelin pilot Super sport are available in that size.
-
Do I need to get 4 or can i get away with just the fronts Jamie?
-
Rear you are generally OK with as you can camber away pretty much to your hearts content :)
-
Glad its could be just the fronts then, expect 2 brand new F1 Assy 2's to be for sale soon then!
Michelin Super sport are about £140 a corner, I have not paid that for a tyre since my Yoko 008 days on my MK2. Kept me alive tho!
-
Pricey but good rubber and you'll have less fitment issues :)
Or buy some wop wop wop oppun Nankang styles hah
-
What effect would 215/40/18 tyres have?
-
less clearance haha

Are you actually recommending wopwopwop tyres??
less clearance haha
By ha ha-ing are you meaning more than screw mod, more like rolling arches??
How much less?
-
The difference between an 215 and a 225 on a 8j wheel is tiny as in they look exactly the same!
-
Thanks Joe :happy2: I think it might have to be 205's then.
I have narrowed it down to 4 tyres, decision now is which??
Hankook Ventis S1 evo XL £95 ish
Dunlop Sport Maxx RT MFS £117 ish
Pirelli PZero £122
Mitchelin Pilot super sport XL £126 ish
Remember the car spends it life on the motorway and not the track!
-
Something long lasting and quiet. Mine sits on the motorway too most of its life so im happy with falkens!
-
912 or 914 Joe?
-
Iv got 914s i think on one set, 452s on current winter set and some random nankangs on another.
Happy with the 914s, quite quiet and good mpg. I think you can only get 914s in 215 though.
