Well everybody an annoying random problem...
I live in a modern semi detached home and for the past 3 months my neighbours weekend film night either Friday or Saturday has a booming bass sound coming through to my lounge. My lounge backs on to theirs and he has his tv and four speakers against my lounge wall. I can't hear a pin drop apart from bass...
My wife thinks I'm being petty but turning up my tv can't stop the annoying thumps and booms.
Am I in my rights to stop his enjoyment of films once a week so a can watch tv or by asking him to get his speakers away from the joing wall
Advice and help please...driving me nuts
Happy new year
Phil

Tough one.... Unless he is doing it at unsocial hours them there's not much you can do... Apart from kindly ask him to move his sub away from that wall and isolate it on rubber feet.
-
If it's only one night a week (Film night as you say) then I'd either ask him nicely as Rich says to try and isolate it a tad, perhaps routing the Sub behind his sofa so he doesn't need so much of it, or go and watch it with him. :signLOL:
-
Moving the sub won't help you. He needs to just turn the bass down, I have to run my system subless because I don't want to annoy anyone, my floor standards produce enough to enjoy a film.
IMO you have 3 options
Assume he doesn't know and tell him. Within his room the bass will just feel part of the film, he might not realise how far the low frequencies travel.
Put up with it....providing your awake it's just noise.
My friend had this issue with a neighbour and asking him to turn it down didn't work, I took the 2 x 18" drivers I have for my cinema room and played 17hz non stop for 3 hours each night.....he then understood why my friend complained.

Guys,
Thanks for the replies, he said he has done what he can and because its a new semi detached hose the walls are thin...
Next question, can I stop base coming through my walls with a gap and soundproofing...I know I'm going to lose space but lounge isn't a bad size

There are something's that you can do, new layer specifically designed plasterboard with an air gap, also some base traps that hang on the wall.
Depends how much cash you have lol

Is that Base2 or Base4 through walls? I hear it works well through Windows and even Mac OS.
Honestly why don't you just knock on his door like a grown up and ask him if he could turn the bass down slightly? It's hardly a major issue and
Then again if you're awake and it's not keeping you up then just smile and consider getting some yourself.
I think you're being petty and we all know women are always right.

Read his reply, he has asked. Not everyone wants to put up with bass filling their room when they want to relax.

I usually find that a strategically placed baseball bat stops any noise from the neighbours :innocent:

Oh haha
Well unfortunately that is part of living in detached/semi detached houses.
If it's not at unreasonable hours (let's say past 10:30pm on a weekend) then you should just accept it or put up with it.
They have as much of a right to watch movies as he does to complain.

There a difference between watching a film and watching one at volume. Every now and again yeah but every weekend is a bit annoying. It would ruin that Friday feeling knowing your neighbours are going to start wacking out bass at 7/8pm when I have just put the kids down and want to chill with a book.

I think that he's not quite appreciating how this is affecting you, if his response was "I'm doing all I can, it's the wall's fault". Turn it down or stop using the sub is the correct answer.
Maybe invite him round to see how much it intrudes, so he can see your point of view.

Give him some of his own medicine. but still at a reasonable time of day that he might not like, then he should appreciate the situation your in. Eg a 8am sat morning movie day :happy2:
-
Keep a detailed diary of anything that you personally consider to be unreasonable. Then write to environmental health.

Two wrongs don't make a right, he'd be worse than the other guy imho

Correct. In certain cases they will come and install a sound meter.
Alternatively something from the REL range of subwoofers should even things out.

BK Monolith Plus will stop hearing his film.
