Title: MOT fail - Carbon Monoxide emissions
Post by: cmdrfire on January 09, 2014, 04:10:27 pm
'Lo all,

My GTI just failed its MOT based on excessive carbon monoxide emissions. I'm a bit puzzled by this, as it's always passed with no problem, and I've been running the APR exhaust setup for several years now (3+ I think). No engine warning lights, and the car has been driven very lightly over the past year. No other changes to speak of. Any suggestions from anyone?
Cheers,

N.

Could be a result of not a lot of usage?

Ill happily swap my oem system for your RSC to get you through the MOT

I'm wondering if the engine was cold when they ran through the test. And thanks as well for the note  the VW lady was already telling me off about it failing because it was a "non-standard exhaust and only a genuine VW exhaust will pass and blah blah blah"...

Could have been cold yeah. Best bet it to take to to somewhere that will do it on the spot (booked in for a time slot) so you can perform an italian tune up  :happy2:

Well, they've told me it was at operating temperature for the test, but it hasn't been driven in about three or four weeks and it was a gentle-ish drive into work... wondering if I should head over there and do the "Italian" tune up and rev it up for a few minutes.

If it's got a full tbe then it needs a good  :driver: to get the cat up to full temps not just a gentle drive it does the cat no good at all for an mot

Put some fuel cleaner in, new air intake, do it when the car is hot after a good hard drive , have it done there and then, not left for hours and then sorted.

Some dealers can be nobs. Failed my mates car for US DRLs because they "didnt know what they were " lol

take it for a good drive out to get the engine to running temp and hopefully go through

Hot-footed it over there, took her for a "spirited" five mile drive (well within the law ossifer), came back, ran the test immediately, and passed. Like Mat Ed30 says exhaust was not up to temp even if coolant reached appropriate temp on the idiot gauge.

...when I walked in the dealership the young lady (who doesn't know me enough it seems) asked if I wanted her to "get the parts on order"  :rolleye:

Nah, they're a good dealers, I was late for my initial test slot and left it there to be tested so not their fault it cooled I guess, the chap who's run the MOT has run it for years past for me and he knew that I'd be over there to sort it out  :happy2: I think it was just a case of the young lady in question not knowing me too well (she's new), once I turned up and she asked about ordering parts one of the old-timers laughed and said nope, he won't be needing anything...

Anyhoo problem sorted and MOT granted  :happy2: thanks for your "advice" everyone  (looking at you Hedge!)

How attractive is she? Tell her you'll happily order the parts if she'll arrange a "back door delivery"...
