I popped in the local vw dealer yesterday and parked next to Pirelli similar to mine (black and 3dr), it had the rear tints which finished the car off nicely. Anyone had theirs done as a retrofit and how much did it cost, also what percentage tint is on the factory option as I don't want to dark.
Also how much was it as an option when new?

I think this must be the privacy glass option.

It is... :happy2:
-
Ah, I knew it was an option somewhere....anyone shed any light :signLOL: on the subject!
-
Was standard on the Pirelli and around £200 as an option on the ED :happy2:

Done a couple threads b4 asking about this mod as it looks good and most of all adds privacy.
Just had a look on the mk5 booklet, £175 inc VAT.
The price of the windows aren't too bad either the last time I looked! But prices can fluctuate.

Yes, mine was fitted with this option as standard from the factory, was well worth it, IMHO one of the better value options!
-
Just checked the last Golf brochure and in 09 the rears tints are quoted as standard for the GT Sport and GTI Pirelli (but not GTI for some reason) and cost £190.
Anyone know the percentage of light left through with the optional tints and whether the tints are black or charcoal. Apprarantly after looking into this a 5% tint stops 95% of light and a 20% tint only stops 80% of light getting in etc.....
-
I've sometimes wondered, if the tints are legal ???
I'm sure they are, but they do look pretty black. I've had a few people say to me, "how do you get away with those tints ?"
-
|Current UK Legislation:
For a legal window tint in the UK the specifications are:
a) Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985
b) The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
c) The front side windows (to either side of the drivers’ head) must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.

I found this:
http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87910
Which says rears are 50% and rear screen is 30%
-
Which is correct - legalities realate to front and windscreen.

The tints were standard on mine too. Great addition to the car. Looks a whole lot better than an aftermarket tint

Thats why I'm trying to find out what the factory tint is so I can get it replicated.

some pics of mine with factory tints. looks a lot better i reckon.

Pretty sure you can have whatever grade you want being even Limo black for the rear windows!. Its the fronts that arent suposed to be highly tinted.

correct

I think it looks silly with just the backs done------van like
I personally think its far better having the whole car done in light smoke,
Its difficult getting away with a tint on top of the standard(front) tints now as its borderline for the light transparency laws.
