Title: Edition 30 using a lot of oil. Is this normal?
Post by: Jap4447 on January 16, 2014, 02:40:15 pm
Topped up oil to max on 23/11/13
Milage 40707

Oil checked on 7/12/13 three
quarters full.

Oil checked on 14/12/13 and half full.

Oil checked on 11/1/14 and 2-3 mill below half way at  milage 41551

Filled to 3/4 full using 500ml of oil on 11/1/14

Apparently tolerances are 1litre every 800 miles

It's 600miles as normal, not 800.

Bought 2  x 1 litres when I first got my ED30  5 & half years ago but have only used about half of one
between the annual services in all that time.
I suppose each and every car has it's own characteristics one way or the other.

Grab a 4/5L tub, most eat oil and need checking regularly.  If your Oil light comes on, you've probably already done some damage.  I keep the 1L courtesy bottle in the boot topped up with Edge.

It comes down to how you drive and how often too... A LOT of owners on here don't even do 12k a year.

Have you any evidence to suggest this?
I doubt the lads would've designed the sensor to alert you of low oil when it's too late.

I wasn't in the engine bay when my Sister in laws Mk5 GTI died but they had the oil pressure light come on, then the car cut out and wouldn't start... AA guy said there was no oil on the dipstick at all, and towed them to VW. They had the car serviced religiously at VW but don't check anything on cars in between (sigh). VW paid for a new engine under warranty after she argued that there was no indication of a problem from any warning lights until just before the car cut out.

In VAS/VCDS errors are time and mileage stamped aren't they, perhaps VW took this into consideration to ensure they hadn't been driving with warning lights a blaze.

So does anybody think I should get this looked at or not? I only drive it on weekends usually, when I do I give it abit of a ragging.

Most TFSI engines use oil but this sounds a bit excessive to be honest ! Is the car blowing excessive puffs of smoke ? Is the back of the car being covered in a soot or oil residue ? Get it to a garage you trust to have them check it over for you

Spoken to vw and they tell me that it's acceptable to burn half a litre every 1000km :surprised:

Better get that drum sorted then

Mine used Max - Min on the dipstick (1litrr) in 2000 miles.

All depends how it has been run in. Harsh run-ins bed the piston rings in better and therefore you don't use as much oil.

Ha yes I better get that drum sorted! Obviously means some tosser doesn't know how to run a car in. I take it there is no way around it burning oil without replacing parts?

After speaking to Alex at AKS, he said that some cars that have been high oil burners switched to Miller's Nanodrive and the oil usage almost totally stopped. Food for thought? :happy2:

Certainly I've been using that oil for two years or so and in that time I've only topped up once.

Oil pressure light and low oil light are two different things.  Low oil pressure tends to be bad.

Same. Mine used naff all oil and cam follower wear is minimised. For the slight extra cost it's a no brainer.

How does the work then, is it thicker at operating temps? Does it work more like that Magnetic oil which "sticks" more readily..?

What weight are you using.

Yeah its slightly thicker. 5w40 vs the OEM space 5w30.

Is it fair to say any Full Syn 5w40 (508 standard) would suffice then?  The Nanodrive oil is mega bucks last time I checked.

What about this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/MILLERS-LONGLIFE-FULLY-SYNTHETIC-LITRE/dp/B00FGYK5KA/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1381603304&sr=1-3&keywords=millers+5w40#productDetails

The nanodrive is a full competition oil, with added magic.  It has a something called a fulerene (sp) molecule added to it. Google it to get a better understanding.

Why scrimp on something so important? Mine gets changed every 3k on all my vehicles.

3k!, has it even warmed up before you drop it :signLOL:  Couldn't be assed changing it every 3 months or less.
