Hi,
Got the MOT this Saturday and i've noticed one of my rear tyres is very low on tread. However I am skint at the minute so I was looking to get maybe a part worn tyre to replace it.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any decent budget tyres for under £60 new or used?
Cheers
Craigh :)

would not recomend part worn mate :sad1:

Exactly. Why would you want to buy something which someone else has decided is no use? Car I bought last year was advertised as having new tyres, when I got there they'd had "new part worn tyres" fitted. One had a bulge in the sidewall (Michelin) despite having 6mm tread on it, and the other (Linglong) was cracking in the treads, again 6mm. Seller advised that there was a rear wheel bearing failing but when I changed the tyres the wheel bearing cured itself. To be honest, I think the real issue with "Part worns" is the people selling them, usually dodgy back street dealers who'll shift anything to make a few quid. If they filtered out the bad stuff and only fitted tyres which were actually road legal then maybe it wouldn't be too bad.
Budgets? Well it depends how budget and what size. Unfortunately, tyres are not something to be bought on a cheapest is best principle for me. I'd rather have the best I can get at the cheapest price.
-
Part worns are ok , depends on where the seller gets them from . Millions of Tyres a year are taken off in Germany and sold , a good part worn seller will not be cheap :innocent:
-
bridgestone supply a budget tyre called roadstone which may be ok.nankangs are cheap enough although made of a very hard compound rubber.
check out camskill for lots of choices
-
Yea I did think that about part worn tyres and if they were any good. I think I may go down the route of something like Uniroyal rainsport 2. They are pretty cheap and have good reviews.
-
Just ebay it mate, you'll get a decent part worn fitted for £60 just make sure its a local tyre shop and inspect the tyre before they fit.
-
Yeah mate,if there is no choice then try ebay
-
Get the same tyre you have on the other side.
-
Well I've decided not to go budget after all...
I'm going to try 2 Uniroyal Rainsport 3's as these look very very good and also 2 Goodyear F1 asymmetric 2.
Which ones should I have on the front and which ones on the back?
Or should I just go for all 4 uniroyals?
-
I'm a fan of 4 matching tyres all the time. I fitted Uniroyal Rainsport 2 on my daughters New Beetle and she's very impressed with them over the bulging Michelin, Linglong, and 2 Continentals I took off. Good tyres at a reasonable cost.
-
Goodyear F1's all day mate, definitly the best trade off in terms of price, performance and wear.
Have a look here for reviews etc.

Hope this helps :happy2:

Great thanks for that.
I don't know why its a hard choice buying tyres. Only thing that puts me off is that i've read somewhere on here that the Goodyear F1's don't like the really cold weather?
Is that true?
-
They are summer tyres... No worse than any others in the wet/cold.
-
not a good idea buying a new tyre that is under £60 it will be cheap rubbish, if you are short on funds find a local tyre place and get a premium part worn that matches what you already have, nothing wrong with a good quality part worn (not worth buying off ebay though too much chance of being sent a dud and having to send it back or makde do).

Thats for 18's by the way

Am I reading right?
Best budget tyre under £60??????
Is this for a Mk5 Golf GTI?
If so whats the value of the car? :popcornsoda:
-
At least £150000.
And don't forget it has to have KW V3 Ultra on it as well.
There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with Part worns. On my old car for the first year of ownership I could not afford new tyres. I didn't want to put budgets on. I bought 4-6mm tyres, conti sport 2s, michelin primacy HPs etc. never had a single problem with any of them.
Use your common sense, bought mine off ebay, you have cover with Paypal anyway, most of the time people are just selling a spare tyre that they don't need or tyre shops are flogging them.
-
Definitly recommend quality part worns over ANY budget plastic tyres :happy2:

Nice gesture to offer a guarantee on any second hand tyres someone buys. :jumping:
Seriously, if you go to a tyre sales place and ask for some part worns, you're taking your life in your hands. If you buy without seeing first, then same applies. If you're buying carefully and know what you're doing then part worns are a possibility (but not for me).

I am not a big believer in budget tyres but my dad had to have 4 new tyres and couldnt afford Toyos he normally has. He got some tyres made by Rovelo and they are actually really good for budget tyres. They cost him £70 a corner fitted and do give good levels of grip and a nice smooth ride. I prefer my Michelin PS3 but then you pay a premium for them.

This! I've also been using part worns, never had an issue, and would much rather use a quality part worn than a linglong pingpong or whatever they're called. The place I go to get my tyres usually are almost brand new and are only there because a 2012/2013 car had been written off with less than 1k on the clock.
Obviously use your common sense and check the tyre yourself.

???
Just no chance having a reasonable discussion these days is there.
Have you used part worns, had any issues? 90% of tyres being sold are where someone has a puncture on one side and both tyres are at 4 or 5mm so rather than have one new and one half worn one, they replace with 2 new and sell on the spare. Or people use tyres on some other wheels, and then sell them and try to recoup as much cash as possible.
Tyres are supplied loose and you can easily check for any defects. As being sold via ebay as well, you are entitled to suitable protection and goods need to be as described. I've ought probably 16 or 18 (8 or 9 pairs) of part worns and never had any problems at all.
Suppose when you buy a new (pre owned) car youre straight fown the tyre shop... :popcornsoda:

Ive got 4 part worn tyres on my Edition 30.. they have been fine even since they were fitted new!

If I'm at all unsure about tyres on a car I buy, then yes I'm off to get them changed. :happy2: I take tyres very seriously and never buy second hand just because someone else says they're okay. That's a choice I like to make for myself, thanks. Buying a set of wheels with tyres on is a little different to buying tyres which someone else has had taken off. There are pitfalls with removing tyres if the fitter (remover) is less than careful. They tend to be careful with fitting new tyres, but not so much in removing old ones. And a tyre which is inflated and on a rim can be checked for bulges, cracks, tread defomation etc. when it's actually mounted much better than looking at a bare tyre.
As I said initially, I bought a car last year with part worns just been fitted for the girl who was selling it. It was a disgrace that any fitter worth his salt would send a car out like that, and how she'd managed to drive it without knowing the issues is beyond me. It was apparent as soon as I looked at the car.
So, part worn tyres should be considered carefully, as should budgets. Again, I prefer to buy quality new tyres at the cheapest price possible, and they're invariably expertly fitted by my mate who's a member on here, as I simply don't trust another fitter with my wheels and tyres.
I'm not having a personal dig at you in any way, just pointing out that not everyone is as honest as we would like when it comes to selling second hand goods (or tyres).

Well after reading all of the comments... I decided not to go budget but I went for 4 brand new Uniroyal Rainsport 3's.
£76 each from Lovetyres on the net.
I have put 37psi in the front ones, however they still look a little low. I know the engine weight has a lot to do with this but surely they shouldn't look less pumped up than the rear?

Hopefully you bought XL Extra Load tyres :happy2:

Yep they are XL :)

The rainsports do have softer side walls and would be fine at 35psi.

that was a good price.
34 psi at the front and 32 at the back should be fine. 37 sounds like a lot, maybe try again using another guage they can vary a lot.
