Title: HELP PLEASE!!! LOUD METAL ON METAL THUMP
Post by: DaveyCupra on January 21, 2014, 09:42:38 am
Hi guys, I am at my wits end,

I have a 2007 Leon Cupra 1P.

For the past year or more I have had an annoying metal on metal thump when going over small bumps in the road at speeds less than 35mph.

It is from driveside front and can be replicated by driving over cats eyes are low speeds up to 35mph.

Also, can be replicated on smooth roads when you drive at 25mph in 4th gear and pull away, labouring the engine slightly.
When I do this it isnt a single noise but thump, thump, thump like a drummer lol

Ive had it to mechanics and they look it over and cant see any apparent faults, Ive replaced the drop links and the top mounts as precautions and checked all my subframe bolts are tight but still no joy

Any body came across such things before?

Lower ball joints, Inner anti roll bar bushes or Duff shocks  me thinks.

These things are hard to cyber fix.......
Take it to another mechanic who knows what they are doing.

I would have thought subframe myself or gearbox/engine mounting...

What about CV joints, anno they make a clicking noise when wearing out or broken, but does or could that effect anything else to cause noise, what top mounts did you replace, did you do the bearing also?

Subframe spacers can be got, also with the bolts being strech bolts, they may have streched...  :sad1:

With the roads being so bad, pot holes can damage things, could it be drive shafts, if you arb hit on the drive shafts could it knock anything out of place, i hate having any noises... does my head in... But anyone that knows me, will most deffently say i'm really OCD...But i dont see anything wrong with having everything perfect...

Maybe someone that knows could explain, if any of the above could cause knocking noises?

Suspension top mount? I had a pulsar that did that a few years ago and it was the mounting for the suspension, replaced the suspension leg and the problem was fixed.

I also think its the subframe that has small gaps, get the spacer kit, or take it to a garage mate

It could be worn shock absorber, worn mount bearing( but your has been replaced) worn ball joint, possibly broken leaf spring..as well steering rack or subframe mounts, engine mounts..get it to someone to have a looky if your unsure..no 1 can diagnose this 1 over the pc unfortunetly...

Not sure about the leaf spring bit as the Mk5 doesn't have leaf springs

I had a similar issue where they was a metallic clunk over semi rough ground, i replaced the drop links, rear console bushes and checked (and rechecked) all other bushes but found nothing obvious so ended up taking it to my local garage. Well they found the fault and its tearing rack shaped!

Should get the car back tomorrow, it was supposed to be today but they needed to order a new subframe and wiring loom for the Gen2-Gen3 steering rack conversion.

That thump thump thump sounds like a buckled wheel

maybe check you front coil springs.

my car was making a similar metal on metal noise when going on bumpy roads, turns out the bottom turn on the spring had snapped and was making the noise
