Title: GT 170 MPG
Post by: ardirom on January 29, 2014, 09:03:27 pm
I've only had my MK5 GT 170 for a few months now, but really struggling to get a decent MPG from it.

I've done a few motorway journeys recently and the best i've managed is an average of 42MPG. This is compaired to about 57/58 on my 130 mk4 GT TDI.

Whats everyone else getting?

Just wondering if this is common, or if i'm running sh*te for some reason...

I've never owned one but a friend has. If he was gentle with the throttle he said he could get 50-55mpg no probs.

My daily commute is 80ish miles a day on a fast A road and 10 miles along the M4. If i take it easy and cruise at 65-70mph i can get 48-51MPG, but if i drive it enthusiastically the lowest i've seen is 42mpg.

Done nearly 6000 miles in my GT TDi 170 since August '13. My trip computer says I've averaged 44 mpg.

My best and worst mileage from a tank are 47.6mpg down to 37.9mpg. All depends on your style of driving, I do completely town driving 5 days a week, and mostly motorway at the weekend.

Best miles to a tank - 517 miles.  :driver: (no cruise control fitted (still). That would reduce my heavy-foot on the motorways. ß

Cheers, that's the reason I got the cruise control retrofitted.
Was hoping for better MPG as well as a potential licence saver.
Btw, it was "golfman" in Dundee that retrofitted it for me. He did an awesome job if you're ever near his neck of the woods. Can't recommend him enough...

Has fuel filter been changed recently? They sometimes get overlooked on a service. May help mpg slightly?

I can get 500 miles out of a tank on the GTI... oh dear. :(

Down a big hill ?

Chris

Nope on a normal drive.

Best I've had was 450 miles and no fuel light on (was close to it though) and 50 miles of range left. That was mostly motorway but I also did 3 days of commuting, which is a 4 mile cold start commute, so I know on a solid motorway cruise I can get 500 to a tank.

Ha ha, we all know that 50 miles range equals about 20 miles real life driving.  Pretty good going on 450 miles in a GTI though. Thats fairly usual/regular for my GT 170.  :sad1:

55 litre tank
500 mile
Is 41 mpg for the whole journey
That must be some very very conservative driving in a gti

Just motorway cruising at 70 with Vpower nitro.

My daily commute is 13 miles each way. 2/3rds of that is national speed limit A roads then the rest 30mph in built up areas. I average around 47-53mpg depending on how many people get in the way that need to be overtaken. Mine is also remapped with DPF deleted.
