Title: My Crappy Car Thread UPDATE Now Detailed
Post by: Tortaruga on January 30, 2014, 11:29:22 pm
I bought a red 2007 GTI for my birthday in April 2012. It was first registered in March or May 2007 at Barbers Northwich. I think it was sold on by the original owner to a lad who then moved to southern Ireland. He re-registered the car, used it for a while, then traded it for a BMW at a second hand sales garage in Northern Ireland. I had been looking for a month or so without success, but had a look at this one and bought it pretty much immediately on gut feeling (I had looked at an Ed30 a week before and it was an absolute mess). It was advertised at £9995 and I got it for £9600 thanks to my amazing bartering skills . There were 38,000 miles on the car.

After owning the car for about 3 weeks I drove into a concrete column in a carpark. I therefore replaced the nearside door skin when I finally found a red one on ebay, but I still have to get a bodyshop to pull and paint the creased sill.

Mods I have done:
1) Hella darkened rear lights
2) LED interior lights
3) Nightbreaker main & dipped headlights
4) Ebay special short shift & 42DD bushings ( :happy2:)
5) Taiwanese open fog grilles
6) Stage 1 remap from 213hp stock to 235hp
7) 18" Monza wheels. I have the 17" Monzas in the greenhouse.
8 Polo aerial
I've remembered a few more:
9) Rabbit valve caps
10) Genuine GTI floor mats
11) Pressed plates & Vogler dealer surrounds
12) Decent tyres - P Zeros on the 18's and Eagle F1's on the 17's.
13) MTEC sidelights

I've replaced the cam follower, fuel, air & pollen filters, spark plugs. I still have to upgrade the DV, but it's too cold for that at the moment.

The paint needs a full correction-this is the most pressing issue. I just need to get the sill and a few dents sorted first; after that I have no plans really as I think the car looks and feels good.

When I bought the car I didn't know how good this forum was. If I had I would probably have tried to find a car with xenon headlights or maybe a decent Ed30. However I bought a good one in blissful ignorance so I suppose I was lucky. It is a nice car and now has 58,000 miles and hasn't given me any trouble, apart from an intermittent door lock control module-I have a new one to replace it when I have some time.

I genuinely do love driving the car, it really is nothing special, but has a definite allure that I can't understand.

I have no photos, but you all know what the mods I've done look like so here's one of Andrew:(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj530%2Fprajames%2FDSC_0006.jpg&hash=65071f9026fc8b6fb4d54c266320264733931f7a)

"Correct me if I'm wrong"-so I did. Rather a skilled pro did, not monkey boy me. Looks alright for a seven year old. Only problem is it has now highlighted every bloody scratch and imperfection. I did feel a bit of a cheese driving home too!

Cheers Martin.  :happy2: It's nice not to see spiders web swirls any time the sun shines. Hopefully I won't drive into a lamppost anytime soon...
