Title: Do GTI's have DMF's
Post by: J6JCC-GTI on February 04, 2014, 09:46:32 pm
Just wondered if GTI's have dual mass flywheels as I thought it was just diesels that had them??

Thanks

Yes they do.

Are you confusing DPF with DMF?

Diesels have DPF's, All modern cars have DMF as far as i know.

Only turbo cars (both petrol and Diesel) have DMF's. It's to reduce the risk of all that torque ripping the gear box to pieces  :- particularly when you set off. happy2:

I believe the reason they put them in most modern cars is to increase refinement (i.e. reduce vibration through the drive train) which may or may not be related to the way modern engines run (may explain the need for balancer shafts)

Enlighten me. . .

First paragraph: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/dual-mass-flywheels/

Not known an N/A petrol engine to have one. My dad's new Toyota Auris 1.6 doesn't, nor my GF's Pug 107. Low torque engines don't generally have them AFAIK.

Don't think my 2009 Civic Type R had one either

I'm not sure, but I seem to recall the R32 doesn't have a turbo.....

It's got a lot of torque so that's why. Small N/A engines (up to 2.0) don't seem to have them. Big N/A and turbo engines seem to have them.

So it's not a hard and fast rule that only turbocharged cars have DMFs then. The 2.0ltr FSI doesn't have a turbo either.

Fair enough. It's obviously engines that have a reasonable amount of torque that have DMF's.

My comment about what DMF's are for still stands

Dmfs are there to provide damping from the drivetrain for REFINEMENT for the driver/passenger nothing to do with shafting gearboxes. :)
With an smf you can sometimes heae more gearbox noise or feel a harsh lness through the gearbox and clutch.
Golf mk4 1.8 20v nom turbo has a DMF..about 125bhp and similar torque.

Not entirely correct.  they do serve the purpose of protecting the gearbox from some nasty torsional spikes and resonances that some engines (not all ) produce  :happy2:

I'm playing GTA.  :popcornsoda:

Some cars are fitted with them for that reason but to say "only turbocharged engines are fitted with DMFs" is just wrong  :driver:
