Title: Joshy's Mk5 Golf Gti build thread
Post by: Joshy on February 07, 2014, 08:39:59 pm
This morning i traded in my corsa and drove away in my golf :driver:
The car is awesome, i'm in love. Still getting used to drive with the DSG gearbox though!

My main plans for this are:
- Air
- R32 rear bumper
- BCS exhaust system
- Some smoothing work
- Vortex front lip
- Forge twintake (maybe a differ CAI)
- Stage 1 remap
- Badgeless grill

That will will probably grow but thats the "main" stuff for now. I'll probably do the little things like rear wiper delete, debadge the rear and colour code the rear emblem!

Cheers mate!
Yes it definitely is an upgrade! When i got onto nice roads on the journey home, i put my foot down and was so surprised! I actually own a car that accelerates.

I noticed that earlier. Can you buy new ones or will i be alright without it? Thank you, i will! :happy2:

Thank you mate! What do you recommend instead of this!? I think the first thing today is paint that silver rear emblem! I need to colour code it.

Here's my rear badge,

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ft427%2Fj12spk%2F1d6d41d200ca40717205825831cc7164.jpg&hash=0c687e51cf5e27f52414be69a036ba6ef4e326cd)

As for the stereo, you have 2 choices:

1- I have the kenwood dnx520vbt which is a touch screen with built in garmin sat nav, parrot Bluetooth hands free, iPhone/iPod connectivity, tv (needs extra tuner) and DVD player. This is made for VW by kenwood and is a straight fit with no other modifications/extras.  Approx £450 on the net
http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/products/car/vw/DNX520VBT/

2- rns510, touch screen sat nav, iPhone/iPod connectivity, shows the climate/parking sensors/rear view on the screen Extra Bluetooth module need for phone connection though. Possibility of battery drain on pre 06 cars due to the canbus leaving the power on (I don't know the exact reason for this) approx £400 for the unit
http://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/volkswagen-rns-510-navigation

There are lots of other options but I would avoid the Asian copies (not saying there's anything wrong with them) and if possible think about the dab versions of these!

Hope this helps

James

I will have a look at the HU mate! They both do look better than mine.
Your rear badge looks awesome mate. I'm not sure what to do to mine. Either leave the logo silver and colour code thr bit behind the logo OR colour code everything!

I was actually thinking of wrapping those trims! Was thinking of doing them in alcantara but i've not used it before. Carbon maybe the better option! Is there a tutorial on how to remove them?

There's a fella on here called brookesb32 who customises rear badges contact him and  discuss the options, mines a mk6 rear badge I think!

One of the new moderators on hear xjay has a mate that does trimming and can do most parts in alcantara, wrapping will be easier and cheaper and there are loads of guides/videos on how to wrap interior parts. Buy yourself a trim removal kit then follow this http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3968.0

I have a Pioneer avh2500bt in mine. They do ones higher up with in built sat nav if that's what you want. Like mine. Works great with Bluetooth and iPod. And look very at home in the dash as well.
I picked mine up for £100 haha

Yh they're only a few quid from vw but you'll probably find it pops off again like mine! I asked my local vag specialist and he said it's not a big deal during winter months but in summer (if we get one) you might be taking in too much warm air from the engine bay. Looks like you're planning on upgrading anyway so wouldn't worry  :happy2:

Looks a decent spec mate, heated leather, dual zone and highline dash :-)... I've got a bcs exhaust and is the best thing I have ever done to mine

XJay1337 - Absolutely steal that! Will have a look around and keep on eye on the for sale section/ebay

M1Whitey - Yeah i understand! Will have a look online for one if its getting warmer and i haven't upgraded the intake yet!

Leigh200sx - Thank you! I was impressed with the spec when i first look at the car which is one of the reasons i bought it. The BCS sounds pretty amazing. Think i'm going for the one without the power valve though. I think i need to wait till i've got a r32 bumper though as im not sure if you can fit the r32 bumper with a standard exhaust

Thinking about upgrading my brakes. Went out for a drive with my friend earlier and my brakes seem as strong as I thought they would be. It probably just needs new pads but I will eventually be upgrading the whole setup.

3rd post in a row, sorry!

Got a bit bored tonight and decided to think about my air ride build. The i decided to try and model what i wanted. So far i've got the bottom bit of the build that will be made to be the same shape as the boot carpet. The cut out is to allow access to the wheel well as the second part pf the build will have a box type thing that some air stuff will sit in!

Excuse the terrible photos. Iphones and crappy light do not mix. I'm also sorry for the mucky car! I need to order some more products :sad1:
Anyway, debadged the car just now - Way too cold for it! Also, my blanking grommet for the rear window turned up!

Went out with some mates tonight. Got a better picture of the rear of the car. I know its really dirty, im waiting for an order to turn up :sad1:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.staticflickr.com%2F3743%2F12600215293_6f483bf59e_b.jpg&hash=8b68e4f3e10801d5f37f9586a33e0e34c7f50e4e)

Also managed to get a photo of my curbed wheel :fighting: Not happy. Did this on the first day i got the car. Also realised the rims have been plasti dipped by the previous owner!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm6.staticflickr.com%2F5510%2F12600534884_2767ac3863_b.jpg&hash=33c71abe92a96f2b88c648c4572aa13dafcdc279)

Thats not the worst part though. After parking the car, i could hear air coming from somewhere, turned out it was the rear right side tyre. Managed to get a nice sharp bit of metal in it, so had to fit the space saver!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.staticflickr.com%2F2889%2F12600532334_742594d845_b.jpg&hash=f58d0802191e2187b0d14987fb3c2fb40227305e)

I did figure out how to use launch control though aha!

Well, i got up this morning and thought it would be a perfect day to wash the car since im off from work and uni. I started out with this!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7433%2F12677096783_88dabd3ffe_b.jpg&hash=4c042da61ea68326c62b8e91f8d0f81e15fbc134)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm6.staticflickr.com%2F5488%2F12677099133_1a04be6314_b.jpg&hash=b539caaeb393a9d1cc927d5ec5b44e3eaed0f443)

As you can see, it was horrible.
I started out with some Auto Finesse Avalanche snow foam. I can't say i'm impressed by this product yet as it didn't seem thick compared to the Chemical Guys Honey Dew foam i was using on my old car. It also didn't seem to drag as much dirt off as i'd expected. Maybe i just didn't use enough!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7405%2F12676956885_54205b66c9_b.jpg&hash=5076ea5077aed90fde7247d4f162dbfc15158326)

After rinsing the remaining foam off the car, i used the 2 bucket method with Chemical Guys Citrus Wash + Gloss. I absolutely love this stuff!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7371%2F12677093303_f169be5533_b.jpg&hash=52f249128d776e93e44c1932b80a88aeb7c58106)

Got the car dried up and started cleaning the glass. I used AG Fast Glass and the results were pretty good. I probably could have cleaned the inside of the windows better but they still look good. The whole car was polished with some AG Super Resin Polish, and then i went back over the car with some Poorboys Black Hole. The tyres and plastic trims were treated to some Chemical Guys New Trim Gel. I was surprised at how well the skirts and rear valance came up with this stuff. Unfortunately it started to rain so i headed inside. I still need to put some wax and seal the paintwork!

While cleaning the car i did notice quite a few paint work problems that i want sorting. So that probably means a full respray if the bit can't be sorted without it! Only found 1 dent though, the rest are scratches and marks!

Finally managed to get the rear wiper off this morning as the wiper puller tool i ordered arrived!
That panel that covers the motor was definitely the worst thing i've ever had to remove :fighting:

Well i bought a badgeless grill on ebay as an impulse buy.
So i went from this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7372%2F12956340375_54af529d5a_b.jpg&hash=1bd31e5c99aa3403a25399890c2aa5ce46e98258)

to this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7456%2F12956338595_27c1afd8da_b.jpg&hash=409c829bb5773d0b55c9009b0bca885a2be765ed)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.staticflickr.com%2F2857%2F12956775364_0e93b2b777_b.jpg&hash=f2deb8cfef2e88916e3ba5a70b0b6822278de8a8)

I need to get that notch in the bonnet sorted now! I assume that when my car is actually clean, these wont be an exact match, but we shall see! I've not got my plate in the window, but i have no idea how to position it and how to secure it!

Im concerned about the gap between the bottom of the two grills though, im pretty sure they should be flush!?

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7404%2F12956501823_2e8f83925a_b.jpg&hash=5693587744b40a23199c5eee9c9ca3106b4918ab)

Im not sure if i actually like this grill! Might look better when i've cleaned the car. Will leave it for a bit, if i dont like it, i'll get a smooth one with the badge instead.

Also took some photos of the grille. Decided i don't like it, so that will be up for sale asap, Im going to go back to my old grille, not sure if i should try to fill the holes up myself. Hmm.

Jack the drivers front wheel of the ground and remove the wheel.. Then you can access the dv from there buddy.. Iirc there is a inner arch liner to move or remove but that's about it

Well changed my DV this morning. Was a pain, but wasn't as bad as i thought. Turned out i have a rev D fitted, fitted the rev G and can definitely hear the air being dumped now. Not sure if its improved anything but, its changed! :happy2:

Also decided to snow foam the car again. Used the Auto Finesse stuff that i've got and i'm pretty disappointed (again) with it. I'm pretty sure it make the car even worse. Hopefully i'll but some of the Chemical Guys Honeydew snow foam asap as that stuff was amazing!

Decided to try and remove all the plasti did on my wheels too. What a bi**h  I ave up as i realised that the wheels actually need a respray which is why the previous owner plasti-dipped them! One rim was an awesome like steel grey colour, but the another one was all kinds of messed up.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.staticflickr.com%2F2217%2F13148520375_b6d761c0b8_b.jpg&hash=d210473d47f920df3e86542dd18022ce50808f07)

I now need to find somewhere local that can refurb the rims. I can't really afford it tbh but just look at the last 2 pictures!!

As above re plasti dip them till you can afford a refurb
Isn't plasti dip pretty expensive though? I'm sure i read that you need at least 4 cans, 1 for each wheel, i also want a nice glossy finish. I may refurb them myself, i did a set on my old car and they turned out okay.

Managed to get the plasti-dip off one of the "diamond cut" alloys earlier

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.staticflickr.com%2F3797%2F13218229133_50ee2f02dd_b.jpg&hash=0566731a146bc546d2e68899595a9a8bb3afc206)

But i realised that it now means i have 2 types of alloys. 1 with the diamond cut face, and 1 just normal. Below is a comparison of the edges of the rims, one is smooth and the other isn't. I doubt you'd notice if i got them refurbed all the same colour!?

Well after having the engine management light come on yesterday, i took the car and had it scanned. Turns out it was because of the oil cap coming off. Pretty happy it wasn't anything major! Anyway, decided to have a poke around the engine bay now. The standard air intake isn't screwed into the engine bay at all, so thats just loose! The cover its self is actually lose too! i think i need a new one.

Anyway, i didn't expect to see this sitting under there!

I assume its the Revo PCV Revamp!

Also, can someone tell me what that is, the bit with duct tape on it!!?

In regards to the engine bay cover, mine is doing the exact same thing with the air intake piece that has fallen off and the cover not sitting right making the oil cap not being positioned right.

I read a thread on another forum the other day but can't remember where or what forum as someone had the exact same problem as you and me. I do remember however that it could be to do with the rubber grommets on the underside of the cover that may cause this? not sure how far to believe this as i haven't had a look for myself yet but it mentioned taking the cover off and making sure all 4 rubber grommets are sat where they should be correctly and then replacing the cover.

You could check this and see if can help you in some way as thats what i plan to do but i think i may be something more than that as in lugs? etc as mentioned above.

FINALLY AN UPDATE!

Over the weekend a new boot build was completed. I cannot thank my mate enough, it looks the nuts. I also took the rear bump stops out so now its sat lower. I'd like to go even lower but the front wheels are sat on the arch liners!

Thanks mate! I need to get the wheels sorted asap. They look shocking at the minute. I should have left the plasti-dip on that the previous owner did!

Cheers! It was build by a friend of mine, he does some quality work.

Due to some personal issues, the car will be up for sale soon. The air ride has to go first though

This is just a head up for anyone interested, or knows someone who will be, that i will have a full air ride set up for a mk5 golf gti for sale soonish. I'll get a for sale thread and some pictures when the actual stuff is off the car.

I know back in 2014 i said i was selling the Gti, well it didn't happen. In fact, i've actually still got it. However, I will be looking to sell it now as i have bought a new car  :driver:

Last sunday, I took the long trip up to Scotland to see howie1987 and his Ed30.
This car has a rich history and has been been owned by a few members now: howie1987, ed30sam123, cuprajake, N8KOW, kevinm

First thing I think is to swap out the old ipod armrest dock for the MDI armrest kit.
I'll be looking for the unit on eBay, and I'll get the plug&play wiring harness from Kufatec. This should allow me to use my iphone with the RNS510 / MFSW.

Order my MDI unit from eBay, and the plug & play wiring loom from Kufatec :happy2:

Slightly worried about retro fitting the MDI as I have the RSN510 and the Mk6 reversing camera, not sure what to expect when i remove the unit from the car.

Welcome to the club! :happy2:
You should get a build thread up.

I always planned to go Stage 1 on the Gti but never got round to doing it. I've just bought myself a stage 2+ red Edition 30, so the black golf will be sold eventually.
