PM limits are going to be set on Friday 14th February. This should give everyone time to sort through important ones.
All members with over 10 posts will be limited to 75 PM's in their inbox
Traders will be limited to 250 PM's in their inbox
This should free up disc space and improve forum speeds even more.

What about the Outbox?
I clear mine periodically but in theory there could be hundreds of folk with hundreds of PM's sat in their Outbox because they have the box ticked to say save a copy. :smiley:

Good point. There isnt much we can do about the outbox, but by limiting the Inbox to 100/250 messages we will almost be halving the total number of stored messages.

Could you make it an overall limit say 150 for both in and outbox?

I'm fairly sure that the total message limit includes inbox and outbox.

Not as it stands. It would require us to install and test a third party plugin.

Same query here as I have a lot of messages (could cull some granted, but I use them as reference on occasion)

Im looking into it today, the only plugin I can find so far will export PMs as XML. It would just be just as easy to physically copy and save any important PMs, or use your web browser to email the PM pages to you.

I will discuss this with Jay and Alex, but I dont see why we couldnt come to a compromise on the PM limit.
As Alex said in the initial post, we are doing this to reduce the size of the forum database to try and improve the speed of browsing. Capping the PMs also ensures that the database doesnt balloon out of control, as this will land us back to square one again.

I did in the past trim them down on a regular basis, but within a week or two it was up again

Once the limit is set then it won't be possible to stack all the PM's up.
This is one of the few forums that doesn't have a limit. Most are set to a max of 50 combined inbox and sent.
I regularly delete, but as they get emailed to me anyway, I have the full backup there.

I've always had the option to save sent messages in the outbox disabled, so not a problem from here. :)
Is there really much space to be gained by limiting PMs to 75 though? They are saved in text format in the db.

They are all quite small files, but once added up it does create quite a lot of wasted space. The smaller the database the less we potentially have to spend on the server size.

Its definitely running faster though, took me ages to load the pages up before.

I must be unpopular, I've only had 296 PMs.
Then again, most if it is simply people asking questions or querying things I've had for sale.. so there's no harm really in losing anything.

Mildly relevant here, but the PM message format is pants really. It stores all the messages as a list, both in your inbox and outbox. Every other forum stores them is a conversation format where each message and reply is linked together so you can read through it as a one page message.
Can this be changed at all, or is it entrenched in the forum software and that's what it is.

We are working on the latest software version of the forum and hope to get this done and tested over the next few weeks. Should have what you are looking for.

Not all of them but potentially a chunk of them.

Just to emphasis what Alex said. Yes there will be an option in the "My Messages" area for either {All at once} {One at a time} or {As a conversation}
The new improved layout and upgrade is looking promising at the moment even if I do say so myself! :innocent:

Another suggestion to make the forum faster: remove every "which DV" thread (except 1 - make that a sticky)
Losing 28,000 posts like that should make a big difference

Turn the search feature into a link to a Google search of the forum. farm out the work to Google...they can handle it.

You can do that yourself. Go to your messages and click prune on the left. Set it to 1day and hit return.

The messages don't delete down to the 100 limit. Problem is that you can't send or receive.

If you use Tapatalk to browse the forum, it will store sent PMs as well, something I can't find on the website. Just cleared 140 sent PMs that weren't taken into account of storage space.

I find this bit annoying, I don´t have enough posts so I could use classified section. And when I try to send the seller private message, his inbox is full. Deadend :signLOL:
If someone could wink member fuscobal to empty his inbox little bit, so we could talk about his downpipe on parts for sale.
