Hi all,
My girlfriend just bought a 2006 GTi yesterday, aside from driving it home we've not had much time to spend in it as the battery had ran flat and I've put it on a slow charge for the night.
One issue we had though with the sat nav, which I believe to be the MFD2 version (loads maps from a DVD and states DVD Navigation on the splash screen)
It was showing us some 80 miles away when I first used it last night. I manager to correct the position manually and turned it off for the night. She took it for a drive today and the GPS accuracy is majorly out. I navigated to my parents just a few streets away but drove in the opposite direction to see if it recalculated my route and before I knew it, it showed me on a different housing estate :(
I don't think it was factory fitted as we have the 3.4 booklet for the ??300 stereo. I'm also dubious of the antenna it has (it's situated by the rear view mirror and has FX on it)
Anyway, how can I check if it has a signal / quality of signal? Any advice or tips as to how I can make it a bit more accurate? Is it the correct antenna etc
I'm pretty much pissing in the wind with no booklet and no real idea if I just have a poor signal or if it's working so if anyone can give me some foresight, that'd be great.
Thanks in advance,

I have had this issue before (I have an rns510) and it was the gps antenna. Not an expensive part to change.
-
Change the cheap stuff first, does sound like the gps antenna as conekiller said. Mine was saying i was in the north sea and another time i was in dover..... I live near manchester

Can anyone suggest a decent one to buy? I searched "RNS 300 GPS ANTENNA" on eBay and nothing in the UK :/
-
Assuming it uses the same fakra gps puck as the rns510 then choose one from the list.

Sounds like it just hasn't been fitted very well. Agree about the suggestions to try a new GPS antenna, shouldn't cost more than £10 and an easy DIY fit under the dash.
You also mentioned battery drain which can occur with some of the newer units fitted to pre-08 cars.

I'm having a similar issue - GPS was working fine originally with the car (we are the 3rd owner). However it now shows us we're driving in the sea :)

Where is the GPS antenna/puck located ? so I can see about replacing it, or even making sure its connected still
