Hi Guys,
Posted this over on another forum earlier, and thought it might be of use to some of you on here ?
Just a post really to give some information to others that may be considering this. My Golf is fitted with 18" alloys and came with a crappy little space saver spare wheel. Now I've only had the misfortune to have one puncture and use it, but not only was it inconvenient, but it scared the crap out of me.
Time for a change I thought, so I went onto fleabay and sourced me a brange new Golf V steel wheel (16 x 6.5J ET50) fitted with a brand new 205x55x16 Dunlop SP spare tyre (won it for £20.00). Whilst it's smaller than the 18", the actual rolling radius is identical (well within a couple of mm) and so is perfectly legal for full road use.
Problem is, the standard wheel wouldn't fit under the carpet so had to source the moulded inserts, which I luckily found on Germany Ebay, mine for £15.00 plus £5.99 shipping - bargain, (they are about £40.00 from the stealer along with the new tool holder insert for the inside of the wheel).
It does have a small minus in that you loose a little boot space (i.e. it's not as deep), but that's a small price to pay in my mind for the reassurance that I won't have to run on a space saver and 50mph.
Anyway, to the pics:
Boot with carpet trim in place (this is the original carpet and doesn't even need to be replaced)

Whilst you do loose a little bit of depth, you do gain all the little cubby holes to put stuff in. As you can see in the above photos, I have my warning triangle, Oil top up bag, VCDS cable, and sat nav all neatly stowed under the boot floor.
Just in case you need them, here are the part numbers for the parts.
Left Insert - 1K6 858 857 B
Right Insert 1K6 858 858 C
Tool Holder insert - 1K0 012 115 C (The bit that goes in the wheel itself). I only needed this as the one I had (which was an 18" space saver) wouldn't fit in the 16" alloy. But if you are sticking with an 18" spare, you existing insert might fit ?

Good info! :congrats:

LOOKIN goood !
no tyre for me.. just a can of tyre weld spray:)

Thanks guys, I hoped it would have been of use. Just thought I would say, whilst it's much safer and nicer to have a full sized spare wheel, it still looks cr*p (though not as bad as the space saver with it's bright yellow sticker) :happy2:

Brillant, nice to hear that Jay. :happy2:
Might be contacting you later this or early next year for a full detail on the old girl. Just need to sort my pennies out.

no problem matey, i shall look forward to hearing from you! :)

Nothing wrong with a space saver as long as you use them the correct way, i.e never fit to the front wheel if this is the one needing repair..Always remove a rear wheel fit space save & then fit the removed rear wheel to the front.Perfect to get you home. :driver:
-
I agree Gene. Nothing "wrong" with them as long as you observe the limitations of them.
Problem is (as you said) if it's a front type, then you really need to do a 2 wheel swap to get the space saver on the back. Plus if your hundreds of miles from home (like I was in Scotland once, on a Sunday afternoon), the prospect of driving 300 miles at 50mph, didn't look too appealing. Whilst I still wouldn't go mad on the 16" full size, it's certainly good enough for 70mph on the motorway.
-
Would this wheel fit over GTI brakes?
I put big brakes on a Leon TFSI and found that the 16" space saver would no longer fit over them.
It wouldnt even fit over the rears :surprised:
Ebay solved the day again with an 18" space saver

......fair point like you say if it's a long journey & no chance of getting a replacment........& thats a nice little mod. :happy2:

Just ordered this for my car, only £45 form VW for both parts.

Would it not be worth looking for a fifth alloy?
Good idea though, might look into this, I have crap rolling about in my boot, this would solve a lot of problems!
-
I know this is dragging up an old thread - but does anyone know if a full size alloy would fit once installing these larger bits of foam? Eg I have an Edition30, if I bought a 5th BBS Pescara, would it fit?
-
Absolutely! I had a fifth 18" Monza nicely tucked in the back with these inserts and it really keeps the boot clear of all the usual cruft you might want to keep in there.
Three things I found when doing this though:
1) The inserts I sourced needed a slight trim in the connecting 'jigsaw' tab as they just were that bit too big to easily fit (simple to do with a stanley knife)
2) In case it wasn't obvious the inserts will raise the height of the boot floor by not an insignificant amount and as such reduce boot capacity. Be warned if you do an ikea run or go on your family hols and your luggage only just fits.
3) The stock Mk5 GTI carpet doesn't have any support beyond the centre where the space saver wheel is. This means that if you put anything even slightly heavy in the boot to the left or right of the wheel (shopping, small animals etc) then it will just push the carpet into the insert cavity.
As a temporary measure I used some corrugated surface protection sheeting to reinforce the carpet - it can be easily cut to size, nicely rolls up in one direction when you need to lift the carpet and keeps things mostly out of the inserts. The "right" solution is to source the carpet from an R32 which had a full sized spare as this comes with the fully reinforced backing to the carpet. You can also identify the carpet for a full size spare by it having a 'fold' near the handle (in case you're looking a t a load of ebay pics and they don't show the underside). Part number I believe is 5K6863463A1BS

Thanks for this information!
The foam parts look almost impossible to find for a decent price, so I might go down a different route.
Would it be possible for you to measure the depth of the wheel well on your car up to the top of the foam inserts for me? I'm thinking I shall buy a couple of those thick insulation panels and just cut the wheel well shape out and have that underneath the carpet rather than having my pockets emptied trying to find genuine VAG versions.
-
Yeah, not exactly 'cheap'. I just watched the auction sites and bought the pieces separately as the prices got 'acceptable'.
The depth of the inserts is just shy of 10cm so I'd go with that as the starting point for your home made solution.
One thing I noticed when measuring is that the inserts are contoured slightly to account for bits like the anchors and whatnot.
If it helps, my right insert got damaged and I'm looking to replace it. You can have it and either try to repair or use it as a template if you like?
I'll be at beach dubbin on Sunday (Portsmouth) with a bunch of bits from my last GTI (RIP) for sale (I'm not in the trade, just doing a clear out).
-
Sorry, didn't get on to see your message until now - thanks alot for the offer, but knowing it's 10cm above the current floor is perfect, should be able to find some insulation boards that are that thick and cut them out to fit!
-
Tried to fit these inserts (that belong in a MK6 Golf, since ones for MK5 are very hard to come by) and had no luck. Foam parts are too big, but according to the part numbers (same as mentioned in this thread) it should fit.
And also seems that there are many options with the inner outline of its cubbies etc
Any ideas on why it does not fit? 3door MK5 GTI
-
The inserts I bought didn't fit 'out of the box' either. I was pretty miffed at the time but in the end took a stanley knife to both halves at the connecting 'jigsaw' tab to make the whole thing a little slimmer - just enough to make them fit.
As you say, there seems to be a few variations on the inner outline. I think the R32 has the rear luggage anchor points higher up to cater for the inserts (they'll get hidden on ours).
