Hi guys, so as I mentioned in the newbie forum (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,79231.0.html), I am the proud owner of my first MkV Golf, replacing a Corrado VR6 and MkIV Golf 1.6, and I have to say, I'm impressed.
Specifically, I bought a beautiful 56-plate Golf GT TDI 170 DSG in Blue Graphite at the back end of last year and though it is essentially a standard car, it has a great feature set and is near immaculate inside and out.
Here are the details:
MkV Golf GT TDI 170 DSG
58,000 (now 62,000) miles, one previous owner, FSH with main dealer & 12 month VW warranty.
Blue graphite pearl effect paint (LC5F) with black cloth interior, leather steering wheel & gearknob.
Highline MFD, climatronic dual zone air-con, cruise control, rain sensor, coming home lights, auto-dimming rear view mirror.
17" Ronal ClassiX wheels (naturally).
It cost me £7,500 from White Rose VW near Keighly, I'm happy at that price given how well looked after it is, the warranty etc. and the price of other cars at VW even now.
Obviously it is a big change from the Corrado but I'm actually surprised at how much better than our MkIV it feels too, I certainly underestimated the step between them.
The short rev range of the diesel was odd at first but the amount of torque available all over the place is just daft and it's much easier to utilise than the VR6.
My initial thoughts on modifications are the dark headlamps and possibly black grille surround as per the '08 GT Sport, R-line fog lamp grilles, GTi side skirts and maybe R32 tail lights but I'd love to hear your ideas.
Anyway, I finally got around to taking some proper pictures of it so here they are, enjoy!

And this is my favourite image I've ever taken of a car:

Shiny!
-
Nice, stunning example.... love the graphite blue, but I would say that :happy2:
-
Thanks guys, it wasn't so clean for long as it managed to get stuck on the grass!
I couldn't believe it but let it be a lesson that you shouldn't drive onto soft, uneven ground with rubbish Continental ContiSport Contact tyres and 350 Nm of torque. I should say though that I wasn't just stupidly flooring it and even winter mode didn't help. In the end, I had to get a push :-/
-
very very nice example
-
Clean example mate, love the Blue graphite.
-
Thanks, I've certainly been happy with it. I know the price may be high compared to private sales but I think as dealer rates go, it was a pretty good deal.
My only real concern, if you can call it that, is that it is slow to turn over when cold starting but I would presume this is more down to it being a diesel in winter than there being anything wrong?
-
Nice colour mate..
-
Nice car dude, one of my favourite colours, but I am bias :signLOL:
-
Lovely colour
-
Blue Graphite is certainly popular around here isn't it.
It's a funny one actually because it's probably not a colour I'd have choosen initially and in the dealer's pictures it looked less interesting but it does actually look great in reality; plus it's always nice to have a colour that you see less frequently.
What I can't decide on is whether the grille would look better with the black insert or left blue as it is now.
-
black for me
-
Nice looking car mate. The second best blue they do  Got a good base to start. Have a look at my build thread if you need some ideas :happy2:
Look forward to seeing how it progresses.
-
Beautiful car mate!
Best colour...
(its not that m bios because i have the same colour and a GT) :ashamed:
-
Cheers, I will certainly be taking a look through your threads, I know there will be lots of inspiration.
-
looks like a great base car mate ! get modding :)
-
Looks great :happy2:
-
Picked up my first upgrade today: R-Line fog grilles, £40 each from the dealer.
I didn't realise that these came with removable rear covers so you can have them enclosed or open.
Fitted pics will be up later
-
Well, I have to say those grilles are tricky little devils to remove and re-fit. The top row of clip, specifically the centre one, are unreasonably tight.
I'm actually not 100% happy with the re-fitting as the top centre clips don't seem to be fully snapped into place but I can do no more beside get the bumper off and work it from both sides. Anyone else struggled a bit with these?
Anyway, I think they are on well enough and are looking good; it's great how such a subtle mod can really refresh the front of the car.

-
As far as I remeber you need to cut the new grille slightlyfor it to fit snug, don't go doing it yet though, there is a thread somewhere will try and find it.
-
I did slice a bit of the thick end of the wedges on the clips actually as it didn't seem to be getting through to snap into place. One side is pretty much OK but the other is still sat a little proud of the bumper at the top-centre.
-
Nice man
-
looks a lot better :happy2:
-
Thanks guys :-)
Incidentally, I chose to leave the rear covers attached. The grilles do look good with them open but, given that there is no ducting towards the brakes or anything, I thought it better to keep them closed and stop everything behind there getting caked in crud.
-
Still not 100% about R-Line grills. I fittest some a couple of weeks ago to my GT TDI 170 and i think they work better on darker colours. Like yours
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx211%2Fdegudodger%2FKL07PEP%2FFront_zps68f7232d.jpg&hash=87a9890376575f2698721c44f1221c35823446f0)
-
I think they work on any colour really, they look much sharper than the standard grilles.
-
Looks mint
-
Some new goodies thanks to dodds-gttdi..... (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,80407.0.html)
They're now in the shed until I find chance to fit them
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--WRHLP8Cg8o/Uxd_JfYxXkI/AAAAAAAATUs/ervkZGGcDNs/w480-h480/IMG_20140305_175510%257E2.jpg)
Also picked up a preemptive CAN gateway, now to find an RNS-510 to go with it :happy2:
-
I didn't mention this on here the other day but unfortunately the courier damaged one of the skirts in transit, I'll not get into that now but another thanks goes to dodds-gttdi for being very helpful in chasing them up on it.
Anyway, the damage was a crack down the seam under the rear door, as you can see below
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-YAw9NVNk72A/Uxd_H08VqEI/AAAAAAAATUc/nLH7_dlRtL0/w913-h685-no/IMG_20140305_173656.jpg)
I've since had a go at repairing it though my first choice of product, Plastic Weld, has no effect on these so I resorted to super glue applied from the rear side. Not too bad considering.
While the main seam has joined together nicely, unfortunately it seems that no amount of encouragement will get the branching crack to close up. I think the deeper surfaces are indeed in contact and glued and that the opening remains because the upper edges have been deformed by local compression of the plastic as the skirt was bent.
Can anyone suggest a product or method that can fill in such small cracks in these without making a mess across the upper dimpled surface, as pasting glue over it would do for example?
Mik
-
Hey bud, heard anything from the courier yet? I'm so annoyed a) they managed to ham fist them and crack them, and b) it won't close. Are you intending on painting them at all? If you are the paint shop should flatten them then use a filler primer to ensure a smooth surface. This might fill in the wee gap. Will den you a wee PM the now. :happy2:
-
It's a shame yes but they're not totally ruined. The dishonesty from the driver is more irritating.
I wasn't intending to paint them no, at least not at this time, I do like the black plastic trim actually. I'm not sure what's available but surely some sort of black plastic filler would do the job if applied with care
-
bloody couriers :fighting:-As dodds says if you are getting the colour coded a body shop can plastic weld it and sort it out...If you are leaving them black then the only way is to replace it
-
I'm more optimistic and I think the current fix is holding fairly solid, it's just closing up the splayed mouth of the crack that I need to do.
Has anyone ever tried this sort of stuff? (http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAR-BUMPER-PLASTIC-repair-filler-250G-BLACK-/360300279991)

This weekends job was fitting the GTi rear valance, the Mrs is picking up the tow eye cover from VW today for £6-odd. (EDIT: specifically, it was £6.25 and she even fit it to the car for me )
I'm actually a little undecided at the moment, obviously I prefer the contoured valance but something looks a bit off and I'm not used to it yet. It might just be because I've lost the mud flaps and I happen to think they look good so I'll probably end up getting the GTi flaps.

On the subject of mud flaps, I took all four off the car while doing this, seeing as the front ones will need to come off when the skirts go on, and I was rather surprised to find great amounts of dirt packed in the sil behind the front arch liner!
-
need to pain the bottom valance :happy2:
-
I might get it painted in the future but I'm not spending on that right now. How much do people usually pay for valance painting, about £500 I'm guessing?!
On a related matter, I noticed that the old valance had definitely been removed / replaced before and was done by some utter moron who clearly used a screw driver to prise it off from the outside causing several dents and chips to the painted bumper like this.
The majority are behind the number plate actually so at least they don't show but, come one, what the hell are you doing! The bumper does have few other marks around the boot lid anyway and I'm going to leave it for the time being until we no longer have to get prams in and out of the boot. I would be much more annoyed if I sorted the bumper and it got gouged with a pram frame!

For the rear valance - I'd say £150-250. Not sure where would charge £500 but I wouldn't to back there unless they were painting the rest of the car FOC!
-
Haha, I had no real basis for that figure, it was just a (wild over-) estimate that I picked at the time. Either way, I'm happy with black textured plastic for now but will consider a painter upper valance section and a tidier bumper in the future. :happy2:
Oh another thing I forgot to mention is how big the gap between the GT arch liner and the GTi valance is. Obviously you will need to fit the GTi liner to sort this properly but for now I just made a very crude little bracket so at least everything is held in place (and yes I am aware of how despicably filthy my liner is haha).

not £500 :signLOL:
I should be picking my valance tomorrow, my body shop are charging me £80 fitted

Here are a few new pics I took in the fog last night. I actually went out to photograph a building on campus but couldn't resist this opportunity, just a shame the car was not actually clean.

Picked up these headlights from D3hnt (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8822) today and it looks like some little fingers want to help fit them already...

I'm going to give them a buff first though and hopefully get this scratch out.
-
Some amazing photos there mate!
Looking forwards to seeing them on your car, iv been looking at getting myself a set! :happy2:
-
Oh thanks TIMEPILLOW, I'm really happy with those I took in the fog, just wish the car was clean when I went out.
-
Today I decided to take on the challenge of reconditioning the headlights I bought recently as they had rather a lot of small stone chips and a few minor scratches.
I decided to go with 1200 grit wet & dry first, followed by 2000 grit (I'm sure I'll get shouted at for skipping 1500), each were done with plenty of water and patience. Finally I used T-Cut to polish and Turtle Wax to seal.
All this was done by hand and it has taken me three hours to do one side though I'm quite happy with the results so far. I will actually give it a bit more going over with the T-Cut to just buff out the last few hairline marks left from the 2000 grit wet & dry but even without that, the improvement is fantastic I think :happy2:
-
What a difference that made, wish I had the balls to do this haha!
-
I understand why people are apprehensive about doing this but there's really nothing to worry about as long as you have the right supplies and a good amount of patience.
They certainly get worse before they get better but you'll also be left with a lot of fine scratches if you give up too soon.
I wasn't happy with my first polish and went back to the 2000 grit with lots of water to work on a few stubborn areas and that made the polishing much more effective.
-
Wow. They look amazing mate! I may have to do fine as mine are looking pretty bad :(
I remember the first time I did something similar with a car grille, It got worse, but after use thing some rubbing compound it came out looking pretty good!
-
Thanks, it's well worth doing. Good luck with yours, I look forward to seeing the results if you decide to have a go :happy2:
-
the rear valance was £100 to get done and fitted at the paint shop for mine..Excellent job on the lights
-
Thanks for the info, that is quite reasonable. It's certainly something I'll have to look at getting done then
I've just put the lights on the car today, looking pretty good! I'll post some pictures this evening once I get them off the camera.
-
Here is a quick look at the new lights on the car, obviously the GTi lamps look much more purposeful but I'm really glad I spent time reconditioning them as it makes the thing look newer I think
I went the whole hog and removed the bumper too; partly because it really isn't that difficult and the extra time is saved in messing about struggling to access the screws, and partly because it gave me the chance to snap those R-Line grilles into place a little better.

looks a lot better :happy2:
-
Thanks, and I think they look even better in reality than the pictures.
Something to play around with arrived today...
-
Car looks amazing now with them gti lights!
Think i might invest in some! makes the car all a lot nicer!
-
Definitely mate, find yourself a set, they're worth while and I personally prefer the look of these over the xenon lamps too.
Don't be put off by scratched lenses either, you can save a good amount on some that are a bit scratched if you're prepared to work on polishing them up again.
-
So in and around the arrival of our second child, I've managed to vinyl wrap my grille insert with 3M carbon fibre vinyl to quite pleasing effect. I also wrapped the thin plastic surround on the grille badge.
Here's a couple of before and after shots, as usual I'll post some better ones later :happy2:

-
OK, I finally managed to get some pictures of the vinyl wrap on the grille plus the front badge surround and rear badge backing. Unfortunately, the car wasn't particularly clean but time for these things is a little short since the new arrival
I really need to do some work on my chrome now, I did use Autosol on the rear but it's still showing lots of hairline marks. Anyone know a good process to restore the badges?

Oh dear, just had the dash bing at me and flash up "Engine Fault Workshop!" along with the glow plug symbol.
Luckily I was only a minute away from home so I just cruised and didn't actually notice if it was in limp mode as I took it slowly anyway.
A quick search seems to point towards some sort of sensor or wiring issue and though I have an old VAGCOM cable, it's a cheap blue one off ebay so I doubt it'll work with the MkV to find fault codes.
Thankfully the car will be going back into VW soon for some warranty repairs (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,82045.0.html) but this will mean a 20 mile drive to get there, I hope it will be ok to do this?
-
should be ok but will be very under powered--least its still under warranty--probs the injector or wiring as it was a recall
-
Thanks, as long as it can get there without risk of damaging anything. It has already had the injector recall done actually, I noticed that in all the paperwork.
-
Oh well, VW have advised me that I should NOT drive the car with a flashing amber glow plug (engine management) light and should arrange recovery, wonderful.
I have managed to get a couple of fault codes with my blue VAG-COM cable and the old software; one appears to be 00568- Manifold Pressure/Boost Sensor (G31): Signal too High (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16622/P0238/000568) and the other 00275 - Intake Air Temp. Sensor (G42): Signal too High (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16497/P0113/000275) despite my software thinking it is an ABS valve

I was very happy to receive this delivery today from goingfast.com; some of the Hella LHD dark red tail lights like they list on ebay along with some smoked mirror indicator repeaters.

Incidentally, if you contact goingfast_info (http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/goingfast_info?_trksid=p2047675.l2559) (or car-style-discount (http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/car-style-discount?_trksid=p2047675.l2559), same people) through ebay, they will email you a better offer and a direct purchase link. They save ebay fees and you get cheaper items, I saved about £30 on these in total.
I was hoping to fit them today but the nice weather has disappeared but instead I have spent some time (much longer than I anticipated) swapping the reverse and fog lenses in the tail lights. It was much trickier than I thought so I might put together a little guide if there isn't one around here already.

So I managed to get the Hella tail lights fitted amongst the rain and chasing my daughter around the car, absolutely love them. Do they look a little darker than standard Edition 30 / R32 lights?

How did you go about switching the rear fog light with the reverse light?
-
I opened the backs and took the two lenses out to swap them over. Unfortunately they are asymmetrical and required some modification to fit in the other side, nothing too difficult but it took longer than I expected. I can post pictures if you're interested.
Also, only after I completed modding them did I think that the lenses from the standard lights would probably fit! It looks like they would but then your old lights would become LHD and harder to sell I guess.
-
Very interested mate, please post some pics of your modification.
-
OK mate, here you go. I have written it up as a little guide for anyone who may be interested :happy2:

A small update for today, these arrived in the post in need of a tidy up but nothing that soapy water, a toothbrush and some autosol couldn't help.
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-N3zXqfXTH7Q/U1lv_ptTKwI/AAAAAAAAVYI/H8R3OjOFwRo/s1557-Ut/IMG_20140424_145438~2.jpg)(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ytf7PAUw7Bw/U1lwA4BlkLI/AAAAAAAAVYU/9QZUT6gm6QE/s1557-Ut/IMG_20140424_174356~2~2.jpg)
Installing them was surprisingly easy and I spent much longer on the cleaning. Why do so many people break the clips when removing the accelerator, including the guy who sold me these; mine came off without any difficulty or damage.

As an owner of a Graphite Blue TDI I am really enjoying this thread.
All the subtle mods are really coming together and the car's looking really smart, you've done a few of the things on my list, the lights (front, rear and indicators). The pedals look really smart too, I've been looking out for a cheap set for my manual as well.
-
Cheers Dave :happy2:
I got these quite cheap with a cheeky ebay bid that came through, perhaps because they were so dirty in the ad or because it was quiet over Easter? Either way, at £34 I'm very happy with them!
-
£34 is an absolute steal, you must have got pretty lucky with that, unless like you said people are that afraid of spending a couple of hours cleaning them before they fit them.
-
Finally got around to fitting these smoked indicator lenses to the wing mirrors, replacing my bright silver (and broken) ones.
It wasn't as difficult as I'd been led to believe and some of the guides on various forums are a little over the top, I didn't need to remove the whole mirror adjustment mechanism for example.
I think these are a mod which compliments other aspects of the car more than the actually stand out in their own right, definitely go well with the GTi headlamps and cherry tails.
Also, I am a little disappointed with the fitment of these, they are just not quite the right size and don't sit as flush as the originals; there's a bit of a gap between the wrap around end and the mirror housing for example. Maybe the InPro ones are a better fit than these from Germany?
-
So I finally got around to fitting the GTi side skirts I bought a while back and the job was easier than I had expected actually. The hardest part was probably getting the support mounts into the holes under the sills followed by getting the first screws in on my own without scraping the skirts around on the floor.
I have put them on without support rails and so far the adhesive strips seem to be doing a good job along with the 4 screw points, hopefully it'll stay this way.

Very happy with them and a little surprised how subtle they are, despite having seen loads before of course.
Next up are a bit of a marmite item, mud flaps  though I might fit those after the summer
-
looks great with the GTI bumper & skirts! Did you get whatever was causing the light on your dash fixed?
-
Oh yeah, never updated that here did I; it was the engine wiring harness which, as wiring is excluded from the warranty, cost me £28 for the loom and £313 for VW to fit it! Sorted the problem though so just waiting for them to approve the new turbo now.
They also damaged the car again, after scratching the steering wheel leather previously, this time there's big scratch over the rear arch. Not happy to say the least and I expect it sitting when the car goes back.
-
Main dealer labour costs are just a joke! at least its sorted now anyway :happy2:
As if they have damaged it twice? i hope they are fixing both the scratch and the steering wheel!
-
They better bloody had do. My theory is that it's being done by some monkey who "cleans" the cars.
-
Finally got hold of an RNS-510 (revision H) which came with a 9W7 Bluetooth kit for the nice price of £400 all in :happy2:
Unfortunately the Bluetooth is not compatible with the red highline display without a £120 adapter so I'll be looking to sell / swap that. The RNS is installed though and I am very impressed with it actually, the navigation is particularly responsive and recalculates routes on the fly without hesitance.
I still haven't managed to install the updated CAN Gateway yet as, after spending forever hunting it down only to find it virtually unreachable from inside the car, I gave up with it going dark! I've made a jumper cable mod for the fuse box to avoid battery drain until I can get the CAN done and hopefully find someone to help code it (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,85086.msg872826.html#msg872826) :innocent:
Out with the RDC-300, in with the RNS-510:

==========================================================
Also new, as of this morning, are a set of Sonniboy window shades. They literally took 10-15 min to fit and are a really nice piece of kit.
Here's a rubbish phone pic for now but I'll be sure to do some comparison shots of before and after as I know people are always looking for this.

Thanks to the kind help from Bacillus (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=49) my CAN gateway is installed and the RNS-510 is fully functional with AUDIO and NAVIGATION showing on the highline display :happy2:

Very nice! so want my radio upgrading now! :happy2:

Did you decide against that RCD-510 that was for sale on here?

I was going to buy it but it was sold when i was gonna ask! :sad1:

You've got a good thing going on here mate, got a similar styled tdi myself. Havent updated my build thread for over a year now but I like what your doing. Keep it up! :happy2:
-
Thanks for your comment CDB, always appreciated :happy2:
I hope it can inspire you to get some updates of our car up here.
By the way, it's great what 15 minutes with some Gunk degreaser and a toothbrush can do...

Nice and clean GT Sport. Love the colour!
The GTI/GTI Ed. 30 front spoiler would be a good addition. Colour-coded spoilers and side skirts would also look great.
Cheers
-
Thanks :happy2:
I don't think I want to colour code the skirts, I actually like the black accents. Will probably get the upper half of the rear valance done at some point but it's not a priority for now.
I keep meaning to do a bit more with the carbon vinyl and look at getting a new steering wheel

NOt much going on in the way of changes at the moment but after a good Sunday clean and polish I took a little trip up to Jubilee Tower for a couple of new photos :happy2:

I have a 2007 (57 plate) GTD 170 not DSG though and my headlights are already the GTI dark ones that you fitted so i presume these must have been an option ? I am loving the work you have done so far, can you send me a link the where you bought the smoked 'windicators' from, as you say they compliment the darker headlights really well :) Keep up the good work
Rgds

Cars after 56 should all be badged as GT Sport on the front (2.0 TDI on the back I think) and came with the dark headlights and gloss black grille insert as standard.
Mine was the single year that came badged as GT front and back and had the silver lights and body coloured grille.
I think some other options such as cruise control and the convenience pack may have become standard on the GT Sport as well.
The mirror lenses were from goingfast.com (https://www.goingfast.com/en/) via their ebay item (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK5-5-Passat-EOS-LED-Mirror-Black-Smoke-Indicator-Repeater-Light-Lamps-/161405053134?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item25947da8ce). You can either buy through ebay as normal or contact them on there and they will send you a direct buy link at a discounted price (as it saves them on ebay fees), which is what I did :happy2:

Marvellous thanks very much for your help, yes indeed i did have GT sport on the front grille and also 2.0 TDi on the back (with a red 'i') but i have just taken these off and swapped the grille for a GTI one with a blue strip to be a bit different :)
-
Nice and shinny. Graphite blue always looks lovely after a wash :happy2:
Need to give my car a clean :ashamed:
-
I didn't even get onto waxing it unfortunately, I was running out of energy doing it the hot sunshine. Going to have to get a proper polisher at some point

Alright bro do you fancy selling your jumper fuse cable?
-
You mean the little things I made to do the temporary RNS battery drain fix (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=37977.0)? Mate, you can have it for free, it's just two pieces of cable with spade connectors on the ends.
PM me your address and I'll send it tomorrow.

Pm'd you bro
