Title: Wanting some new bulbs. UPDATED: COMPARISON PHOTOS.
Post by: letlifeburn on February 17, 2014, 11:30:39 pm
I know these questions have been asked a lot, ive read through a few of the posts on here regarding them but non have fully swayed me.

Im after a brighter bulb really, ive been out on long night drives in the golf and on some roads the dipped beam is practically useless for me, but at the same time, as stupid as it sounds, i want them to look nice too, not 5000k+ blue but with a tinge of blue.

Obviously the Osram night breakers and Phillips xtreme visions get mentioned a lot here, but ive never really seen any good photos of the two compared to show what colour they are.

Ive seen the Osram cool blue intense and the Phillips bluevision ultras, but again ive not seen any decent pictures to show them off.

I was wondering if any of you guys used any of the 4 bulbs ive mentioned and had pics to compare them to standard ones, of even compared to each other if any of you have tried a few.

thanks.

Anything that has a blue coating on the glass will give you less light output than anything like the Ring Xenon Max or Philips X-Treme, or even standard.. a friend of mine recently bought some PIAA bulbs with a blue tint and phoned me the next day saying they were even worse than the factory bulbs in terms of light output.

The two mentioned above give excellent light output, and the light is 'whiter' than standard, but I wouldn't say they have a blue tint. Unless you go for an uprated bulb in terms of wattage, any sort of blue tint is going to lose you light output  :happy2:

Are the Philips X-Treme a simple case of switching bulbs or do you need adaptors etc?

I have Osram Ultralife. A bit brighter than standard and supposed to last a good while.

I had read a bit about that coating making them less bright. But I thought with both brands claiming they were 30% brighter even with that coating they would be brighter than my standards.

My head does say to go for night breakers due to what you all say. But when I see pics they just seen slightly less yellow. I am making it more awkward with fact I do want matching lights in all of them. Yea I know that's a bit sad haha

I had only replaced 2 of my headlight bulbs for osram nightbreakers unaware that you could buy a 4 pack to replace all.  Im still looking though to see which sidelight bulbs are of a whitish nature as obv its the yellow tinge at the mo.

I've got osram cool blue intense in mine and they're the first aftermarket bulb I've actually been impressed with.

They do look considerably whiter than standard (not blue AT ALL .. Which is a good thing!). The output is fine, I don't think it's any different to standard - maybe even a little better. They aren't supposed to last that long though - mine have been in 6 months and seem to be fine still.

Also, cheap enough that it wouldn't be the end of the world if you weren't happy with them! Check eBay for good prices.

The sidelights are philips blue vision ones for reference.

Well I got some night breakers from euro parts in York today. £17 for two h7 bulbs which I thought was very good considering power bulbs are selling them for £27 I think.

Will get some pics tonight.

So here is the comparison, Not expertly taken photos, but the iphone has a good camera when used right.

Ill start with the old bulbs from inside the car, so you can see how bad mine actually were.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fy138%2Fletlifeburn%2F9BFD6367-F9EE-43C8-B9AC-67A2405167C5_zpshqjuz8gm.jpg&hash=494cdee000cf3d4ad6a73fa1f9b239c94844d30a)

This is with the passenger side changed to the nightbreaker. So left side of the pic.

And finally with both night breakers in.

I was very impressed with how much brighter they actually are, Id seen the figures on the pack but never really believe them.

Heres just a couple pics to show the old bulbs from the front to the nightbreakers. There not as white as I thought theyd be, but when they light up the road like that, im not bothered.

Im super impressed, with how bright they are, i did expect a couple people to maybe flash me thinking i had my main beams on, but ive had nothing, i think im gonna go get them checked just to make sure the beam pattern is right and everything. maybe sure i aint knackered anything up fitting them.

Osram Nightbreaker Plus certainly made a difference when I had them in my old Leon FR. Upgraded both the H1 & H7 bulbs as I live out in the sticks and the result was far greater visibility. Had them adjusted at the local MOT station afterwards to make sure they were set correctly.

Wow that's a massive difference! I had nightbreakers in the past and was quite disappointed - they seemed almost no different to standard. Maybe they  improved them since!

Just put Mtec 100w super whites in.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MTEC-H7-12v-100w-SUPER-WHITE-HID-CLASS-HALOGEN-BULBS-/400380985536?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d389100c0

about 20% brighter than 55w super whites I had in before, better than ring xenons.

its a bulb mate, no adaptor needed.

You need H7 bulbs :happy2:
