Is it possible to buy the OEM front projector headlight cluster thing, and retrofit it onto my car (Obviously, I dont have xenons) I've seen someone on uk-mkiv's that did it, but he never replied to me about it, so i dunno if he used the OEM part, or he got one from elsewhere.
My intention is not to convert to xenons, but I just like the look of a bulb coming out of a projector dome, rather than what I have now.
Cheers!
-
If your gonna buy them you may as well go the whole hog! JPC is fitting some to his GT at the moment. Check his ride thread out.
BTW, the xenon units are a lot more silver inside than the standard GTI lights. I wasn't keen on how spangly they were on my old GTI so was happy not to have them next time :santa:
-
Hella make them and are on eBay

I thought folk got the xenon option more for their better light output vs cosmetics...

Nice one!! I never really think to look on ebay!
Im guessing an OEM part would be $$$$$ more expensive?!
-
Personally I would never have a car without xenons again, the light output at night is far superior than standard halogens. I went out in my mums GT sport the other night and that has halogens and I had to check if they were on or not when I was driving on a particularly dark section of road, plus I think the xenon units spruce the front of the GTI up a bit. :happy2: :jumpmove:
-
Chris are you saying you want the OEM xenon look cluster, but still have the halogen beam.

Yeah agree with you completely.
I went from a car that had xenons to the Golf without, and the difference is crazy - as you say! But £750 for xenons that VW charge, compared to £450 that BMW charged was a bit of a joke! I've upgraded the bulbs, and now they are bluey/whitey and dont look too dissimilar a xenon light, so the projector lenses will top it all off nicely!

Yep!
Combined with my uprated bulbs as mentioned in my above post, I think it will be pretty close to the xenon look (although not actual light intensity and amount of output that a proper xenon brings)!
-
As said Hella make them and are on ebay.de/ebay.co.uk for around £350 well designed cluster too.

They are very expensive but worth it IMO. It was the first box I ticked when I purchased my car. I am looking into getting a 170 diesel at the moment and trying to find one with xenons is impossible so I would do the D.I.Y fitting like Jay. I just have to have them if you know what I mean :happy2:

Might consider this yeah. Likewise, was the first box I ticked on my previous car! Really do miss them!

Can anyone with access to the VW parts program thing give me the OEM part number? Just interested at what VW charge!

I really like the look of them, has anyone got any pics on a car with the lights off. :chicken:
-
vw charge £350 per xenon light, thats without a wiring harness,
they also tried telling me I would need a new light switch in the car but I think thats bullsh!t
I want xenons too.....
-
Those in the ebay ad look great :happy2:
-
To do the full mod with washers and the works even if you get the actual units cheap on flea bay you looking at a grand plus and a lot of work. I think i will just eat more carrots (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDaft_stuff%2FComedy.gif&hash=eb190c01f5622e0dc9421cd52a93629e3ef1cfc1)

Surely though, as a compromise you can buy the projector units (which we all agree look fantastic) and just run with the standard bulbs / or even better, uprated bulbs!
One question to those in the 'know how'. Once ive bought e.g. that Hella unit on eBay, would I need different wiring / bulb harnesses etc?
This is similar to what Hurdy has done - albeit he has used another type of aftermarket projector unit that enables him to have angel eyes...
-
Was about to post the ebay link, bit more expensive now, I guess cos the pound has lost value against the euro.
I believe the units are plug and play, as id imagine the only difference between those and the standard are the actual housing.
-
those hella ones are sweet :) Just been on the site have you seen the light for the Golf MK5 that follow the road like Audi's adaptive headlights...

Ouch those hella lights are £232 each off demon tweeks!

Chris
-
you all found them then  if i can find a part number i might try vw for them
-
£412 delivered from Demon, the VAT must have made all the difference! :santa:
-

1st GTI, factory ordered with Xenons, 2nd GTI stock car no choice on options = No xenons. Not the end of the world as I've upgraded my bulbs, but as I said I prefer the look of the light unit when the lights are off on the standard lights. If that's ok with you pal? :chicken:
-
Chris iz you going to to getz them Hella's i really like them and i think you need them on your car for the pod meet so i can have a look. :santa:
-
my old type r had the projector style head light and it did look better than old one with non projectors
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2FSP_A0003.jpg&hash=ec0ace7586b5d6bdf3782b40c1c9f1961a7177bc)
but for £400 it can get fooked as that will go on a diff
-
i have found a proper part number for these that should work at vw so i will find out on monday a good price so dont get any :happy2: as think the ones on ebay are a rip off
-
make sure when you speak to them, that the price includes the bulbs and ballasts
-
Lovely CTR you had there! My best mate used to have one, and I drove it all the time! Great fun car - just a shame about the slightly numb steering feel!
I probably wont be in the market to buy these for a couple months, but there seems to have been quite a bit of interest in them during this thread by others!
You do have quite a few contacts don't you Mat!! :xmastree:
-

normal bulbs only needed for this type of headlight as they are non xenon :happy2: so just stock bulbs are fine

Hey Tom,
I think I'll buy them early into the new year. I agree with all the comments on here - in that they completely transform the look of the front of the car!
Just prioritising a few things really. So am doing the vinyl and fitting a private plate next Wednesday, then the following week will be fitting the Forge short-shifter (front/back and side-side) and some Lamin-X film to the front headlights, then after Christmas I'll fit the Whiteline Anti-Lift kit!
After all that, I will do the projector lights!
Very intrigued as to this company that Mat has found though! Eagerly awaiting this price!

That's now second on my list, right after the vagcom!
-
WOW!!!!!!!!
What do you think the quality will be like?!! Must be sacrificed considering they are a good £200 cheaper than the Hella!
Are you going to buy a set of these Mat?
So are these basically plug and play - in that I fit them, and then just connect my existing bulbs into them?
-
they are the hella ones :happy2: so will be oem as such
-

Just tried to order some under a fake email address / customer address to see how their payment system worked , i.e. if they were secure...
Filled in customer and address details - obviously with fake details
Then it asks you to fill in invoice details - which comprises of Name, Company Name, VAT Number and Address. Filled all of that in with fake info.
Then it brings up a screen saying congratualtions your order number is No. 79. And then nothing else!!!
Then got a blank email (i gave an email address that is basically my spam account), with the subject field confirming my order number: 79!
Bit strange....?!
-
well i have sent them an email and checked the company info out but dont worry as i am still waiting on hella to send us a vw part number and a price from them so just hang on for a while
-

:scared:
-
i did see that  i am just looking at the hella parts list at the mo :ashamed:
-
they have been trading since june this year too.
i would think that too good to be true for genuine hella lights and i would also think the picture they used isnt quite representative of the product. but ill leave it mat's capable hands!
-

Ok spoke to the chap he apologized for his web-site but to be honest he was just as confusing on the phone.
The price is for one light only you need to double it obviously for the pair so circa £ 300. he said he also sells them on Ebay so lets see if we can find the link. :chicken:

Wow, they are nice!
I'll revisit this purchase in a couple of months, but if that company are legit (eurowagens), then £300 is still a decent price!
Cheers :happy2:
-
they are pretty much the same headlights.
at a guess, hella made the headlights under license for VW and they are making them with the same dies/equipment and selling them out of license. which is fine. the xenon unit is probably made by someone else (siemens/bosch/hitachi) and VW put it all together. hence why they are just the housing from hella! ;)
-
I have a feeling these are just normal vw headlights but without the xenon mtr that goes on the back so if any one has a pic of the xenon lights from the back of them please post pic up as I can get these cheaper but need to see a pic from the back of them
-
yep...just the same. they probably even have the recess for the control unit for the xenons
-

i got an email about these lamps from hella today
Matthew,
Thank you for your enquiry.
The part numbers you have quoted are for continental lamps and there for not suitable for UK use. If the lamps you require are Xenon look for a Golf 5, the UK part numbers are 1LL 009 476-031 for the left and 1LL 009 476-041 for the right. The recommended retail is £215.03 +VAT, each.
Unfortunatley we don't sell direct. If you would like details of your local distributor, please advise me of your address and postcode.
