I've enquired about having my paint restored as it's a complete mess at the moment. It's a black mk5 and is full of swirls and scratches.
A guys just quoted me £320 to sort it out over 3 days without looking at the car.
I don't know a thing about detailing so I'm not to sure if this is a good price or not?
I'm in Essex and I don't know how to go about finding other detailers to compare prices

Hello.
Firstly I have moved your thread to the correct section.
A full paintwork correction is not cheap. £320 for 3 days of work is pretty reasonable, especially if their quality of work is good. What's the company you have gone with?
At the end of the day, you can easily spend 35 hours doing a heavy enhancement / 95% correction detail and it's not only the products that are used you're paying for, it's the cost of the machinery, and more importantly the skill of the person doing the work.
Could you find cheaper, maybe. But depending on who is doing it, you may find that you end up getting a worse result.

Sorry mate my bad!
I did have a quick look through your guide to detailing but I think I need to spend a fair few hours to take it all in.
The bloke is called L N Detailing and he's from Southend. I'd never heard of him before so I will be asking to see some of his previous work before I get him to do it.
And that's a very fair point, you pay for what you get

Same place??
If his quality of work is right then fine but ask him if you're not sure.
I know a guy here in Newbury (bit of a trek for you) if you want - He's very competitively priced and is fully insured, works on Ferraris, Lambos, etc haha
-
Yh that's the guy
Newbury is 2 and a half hours away haha! I'll get a bit more info of this blokes and may be back in contact if he isn't all that :happy2:
Thanks for the help!

You've got gleam machine in chafford hundred who's done a few cars on here with good results or you've got KDS in Medway who are good. Look on detailing world for others nearby

As above, Kds are one of the best in the industry if not the best, but bare in mind you get what you pay for and most likely you will looking at double your original quote.

KDS are very good.
Kelly is highly regarded and respected within the industry. But then again, it's a full time thing for him. So of course they're going to have impressive facilities and some very good staff. They help test/develop the Gtechniq range of products as well this is always a good thing to have the support of Rob from Gtechniq he is a very helpful and knowledgeable guy as well.
Like you say they are pricey. But their skill and reputation perhaps demands that premium.
That being said, they are somewhat a victim of their own success, when they charge £50(plus vat, how generous!) for a 1 hour visual report of your vehicles defects.. (basically they walk around and show you what marks you have and if/how they can remove them) which most detailers would do for free as part of the getting the business..If you want Mr Harris himself to do it, that's £80+vat.
:stupid:

Thanks for all the recommendations :happy2:

Bring them over and we'll see them in action haha!!
I think I've just gotta learn it myself. And there's a group buy for a das-pro 6 which I've heard good things about
-
Buy a rotary and save the mo ey to put towards some good quality 3m products,
Silver line polisher, and the perfect it 3 range with pads can be had for just over £100. Add a good wax and your set,
I was teaching someone how to use one today, it's not magic you know.

Are they Rotary or Dual Action?
£320 sounds reasonable without being so cheap it'd cause concern. Just go down and look at the sort of cars in his unit and that should give you a clue.

I am sorry Jake but I do not like the Silverline polisher. It is very heavy and vibrates a lot. Compare it with a Flex for example it's a night and day difference.

I've heard the exact same thing. There cheap but I'd rather spend a bit and get the right one as it's probably the only I'll buy haha! What products should I use as I have bad swirl marks and pretty bad scratches?
-
It's horses for courses.
There all I've ever known. Tbh the weights really not an issue lol. It's not like it weighs half a car.
The vibration is simply down to how you set the pad up.
We're trade and I've used them all mine life with no issues.
-
Jake try a Flex one mate.
While pad position can effect vibration, a Silverline span up with no pad on it is still got a lot of vibration, easily equal to my Das6 Pro and probably 1.5 times the weight. Try it next to a Flex it's almost twice as heavy. It's also twice as big.
It's a cheap machine. It does the job. It's not refined though and there are far better out there.
-
Didn't know there were different ways to spin in a circle.
Must of been using the wrong way for the last 10 years or so then.
There soft start, variable speed have a three year warranty lol.
We chabge out the backing pads and there great for what they are. I've never known anyone complain about the weight if them that's for sure.
-
try r32rob on here, i had mine detailed at gleammachine but rob is even more detailed with his work i would say.
check my sig for my pics

Come on Jake.
let's not get all childish :happy2:
Trying to have a reasoned discussion mate. No-ones saying anyone's using them wrong.....

It's all good now. I've read jay's thread and I've slowly started to get some stuff ready for a good detail!
-
Just taking the pee mate,
Just simple fact you don't have to spend stupid money on fancy machines when there are ones that are well capable of doing the job.
We've used the silverlines for years and never have one spin off centre. And we use our two- three hours a day average, everyday. So they get hammered.
Just can't help the whole detailing business is designed to rip the average punter off. Which is a shame. There's so much bs about.
