Good morning!
Just bought on 06 GTI, and it is generally doing 6 miles per day into town and backing my wife going to work, school etc, so probably not getting warmed up as much as it needs, and then I'm using it for longer runs at weekends.
The mpg indicator is giving us 17 mpg around town, and on a run at a steady 80 over say, 50 miles last week it averaged 28mpg?
VW have just given it the all clear health wise, and their master tech says its a really good example.
I'm just curious what others get, and moreso average miles to a tank of fuel. Running mine on optimax.
Thanks!! :happy2:
-
Sounds maybe a bit low. During the week I just drive 2 miles each way to the station and back, during which it returns about 25mpg. On slightly longer runs I get closer to 30 and the highest I've seen is 35 on the motorway. This is just with normal driving not trying to be economical but at the same time not pushing the car hard either.
Is yours manual or dsg? That can make a difference
-
I do just under 8 miles to my work and by the time i get there i get about 28-31mpg. Half of it is national speed limit if that would make any difference. Driving steady as letting the engine warm up. Even around town i get about 26-30ish.
Yours does seem rather low. Considering i have a custom map and twintake, i would of thought you would have better mpg.
I always run mine on V-power
-
I do 6 miles to work down B roads.
I get between 26-33mpg depending on conditions and traffic. On the motorway I get 34-37mpg when driving normally, in economy mode I get near 40mpg.
-
For a GTI that is only mildly tuned the OP's MPG seems low. Urban mpg I would have thought very low 20's and motorway should be just over 30mpg at 80mph.
-
I get high between 26 and 30 plodding around and can get mid 30's on longer with cruise control on. That's mixed driving
-
Thanks guys, mines a manual. It had been remapped but I've had it put back to standard the as it's mainly a daily drive for the wife to ferry the kids about. I also wasn't sure about the map so thought it was best to be safe. Emissions and hydrocarbons are spot on too?
-
Could someone give me an idea on miles -per -tank ?
-
I average between 310 to 350 per tank. Some people have got over 400 but the nearest I get to that is 370 as I get bored and te right foot gets heavier lol. I've also had it as low as 160 some have had it lower :driver:
-
You aren't trying nodz, I managed 105 miles on a tank on my ED30....... It was at the Nurburgring though! :driver:
-
Urban, 24-26mpg, my commute to work 22 miles 35-38mpg mainly motorway at 50-60mph. Although sat in heavy traffic sub 20 is occasionally seen on short journeys.
-
If I pop the the shops or train station in mine it does about 16mpg :star:
Short motorway run ~25
Long motorway run ~30-35 depending on speed.
-
I Too have a 2006 gti and when I first bought it the mpg was terrible at a average of 22mpg. And around 250 miles to a tank...I've replaced the diverter to a rev g,also replaced the pcv system and also had the spark plugs changed at the last service, my car is now running stage 2 map around 280 bhp and is getting 28mpg on my very short 6mile round trip commute.. Yesterday I did a 120mile drive at motorway speeds and i got 36mpg
-
I get 24-28 round the doors and dependant on length travelled 32-40 mpg on a run
-
Definitely sounds a bit low, short journies are a bit of a killer in these cars. On my 18 mile drive to work (mostly motorway and national speed limit) I get 33-37 mpg depending on traffic. And around 350 miles to a tank.
However I have had some time off this week and have just been nipping about making short trips and I've chewed through almost as much petrol as if I had been going to work! I've seen about 24mpg. Although I may have been 'enjoying it' a bit!
As said above - may be worth looking at changing spark plugs, PCV, Diverter valve etc.

At least I know what I've got to aim for when I go to the Ring :driver:
-
I have had mine a couple of months now and average 26mpg on my daily commute of 12 miles return to work
To be honest i am a bit uncertain as my 335d use to give about the same
Will look in to the suggestions of pcv and dv when i get a chance
-
Me too .previous owner told me he had change the Dv but I may get it looked at tbh. And plugs etc.
-
Best I've had over 25 miles of A Roads doing between 30-70 with lots of cruise control and V-Power :

Usually get ~330 miles from full to light.
-
I have managed 390miles before the fuel light came on, this was on my Ed30 driving like a :pomppomp: on the motorway.
-
I've been wondering the same recently... I averaged 27 since I picked the car up 3 weeks ago. On my short commute it can be between 20 (traffic) and 24, once warmed up on the motorway around 30-32. Seen a marginal improvement since changing the DV valve from B to G, spark plugs and coil pack up next this coming weekend.
-
I've ordered PCV and rev g today- let me know how you fare- it's gonna be a week or so until mines done
-
Update! New PCV just being fitted. Car already had a rev g diverted so not changed that as it was only put on in October. But the big thing the mech found was the spare plugs( all 4 ) where only in hand tight!!!!!! Surely this has got to contribute to loss of compression and poor fuel economy also!! ?? Watch this space.....
-
Ok,just an update, a new PCV,new plugs which are now tight(!) and mpg has immediately risen from 17 to 21 mpg around town, and a lot of this has been stop start, over speed bumps etc. does this now sound acceptable fellow owners? I'm hoping to get it out on a decent run tomorrow to see if it increases....
Question now is is there anything else I should be looking for?? Anything else I can try or change to increase mpg?
I'm thinking of a Terraclean next?
Any info greatfully received! :happy2:

:happy2:
Happy to report that on an afternoon out I've managed 37mpg to our destination, and then we took the A roads home and it's average 28mpg!!
Whether it was the plugs being loose, and changed for a new set and tightened up, and / or the new PCV I won't know but deffo happier with the result!
Thanks for everyone's help and advice!

I managed some pretty amazing figures today in my Ed30.
Coming back from Ultimate Dubs today over 31 miles I got the below:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fi399%2FWhitehedgraeme%2F06d75080e2ea819abc677edeefd5baa2.jpg&hash=1b1234cd1acc4fa086029126f2cafa04d102bbb6)
I had done a trip before to warm up the engine and reset the mpg then so the car was already warm. The journey was steady country lanes and probably most of it was downhill. I was doing 40-55mph the whole was, window down and just taking it easy, kept the turbo off boost and accelerated at a rate that wouldn't upset the traffic behind.
This is better than the 45mpg I got from my old K03 GTI :notworthy:
-
Got 39.7 driving like a normal person on way back from UD and about 38 on the way up.

It's the work of the devil right there 666
-
I'm a pro at hyper-miling :signLOL:
I got 37.4mpg on the way there, although that was with a couple of hard pulls through the gears and the heated seat on
The TFSI is great on fuel if you know how to drive gently
-
I got 26MPG on a ~200 run today... you guys are doing it WRONG!
-
I usually get from 350-375 miles for a full tank depending on my mood
But getting anything above 30mpg is pretty boring imo...
-
This is better than the 45mpg I got from my old K03 GTI :notworthy:
It's probably because it's easier to be off boost in the K04 :drinking: :P
-
I only get about 300 from a tank though thats mainly city driving.
-
Managed 41.2 on a 128 mile round trip to a meet yesterday. That includes two 4 mile cold engine commutes to work through town.
-
Quite impressed with some of the figures you guys are achieving. Taking mine for its first long run this weekend but even driven normally I'm not convinced I'll get above low/ mid 30s, will see what happens!
-
Looking at some of these figures and thinking "I wish I'd bought a GTI now".
I only get 475 miles out of a tank on my TDI and Diesel is more expensive anyway :sad1:
Then again at my age insuring a GTI is an expensive hobby without the fuel.
-
Do people find using 98 RON makes much difference? I filled up with Shell Nitro last week but this week I was in a rush so just put in some supermarket fuel. MPG doesn't seem any worse, maybe slightly better if anything...
-
I get about 350 to tank of v power in my std edition 30.
-
I get around 280-300 in my ed30 rtec stg2 Dsg
-
38mpg today on a 55 mile motorway run, happy with that as included a few quick overtakes
-
Usually get 375 - 400 miles to a full tank with 40 mile round trips to work & back, usually about 38mpg on the trip. Have noticed if I'm just driving about the village it drops to high teens early twenties.
-
I get around 300 miles give or takes couple, mainly town driving. I've just changed my DV so hopefully a few more from now on! :happy2:
-
I cruise control at 65mph and get 38mpg on the way to work and 40mpg on the way back (it's a 32.5m journey each way). I get about 420 miles from a tank.
-
370-400 for me. Its generally 50mph+ on a mix of A roads and motorways, averaging between 35 and 38 mpg
-
I have managed just over 31 mpg in the R32, that was town/motorway driving over a distance of 41 miles. I ran a tank of Vpower through it with a Redex chaser, and it's been better mpg-wise on short journeys since I've done that. Could just be that the weather has been milder for the past week though
-
I will post new figures with my evap fitted. It should help me get better MPG.

whats an evap?
-
Is it just me thinking out aloud or we've all spend thousands modding our motors for what ...? To then chat about best mpg ? Wtf ? Put ya foot down and keep it there ! Or go buy a Prius FFS

But this is what makes the GTI such a good all rounder. Its great fun and pretty quick when you want it to be but also capable of being reasonably economical when you need it.
-
I've seen mid 40s on a decent run but my average since I bought the car in Jan is 40 which I'm more than pleased with, was getting 60 in my last car (astra h 1.7).
-
I love MPG threads
Nearly as good as "which tyres" threads
-
757.7 miles to the tank yesterday, smoking diesel or what :P
-
My Stage 1 Edition 30 usual about 32mpg on a normal run.....drove up to Manchester a few weeks ago and managed 37mpg motorway driving :)
-
When I first got it around 180
Now around 230-240
