Title: Plastidip or rattle can for front grill
Post by: Degudodger on February 28, 2014, 07:35:16 pm
I have a spare grill i want to spray Matt black and i'm not sure if plastidip is going to be more resilient to stone chips than a rattle can spray paint, i would have thought so but thought i would check first :)

I'm have the same predicament. Spray chips easy, I might try vinyl wrap.

I plasti dip'd an r32 front bumper about a year ago, the car gets driven pretty hard and there arnt any chips really, it has a few layers on and because it is a bit soft stones probably bounce off instead of chipping.

I used a can of Plastikote in Matte Black today. After a good clean and 3 coats they came up great (upper and lower grills). As for the longevity I cant comment as yet!

Update

In the end i decided to use a rattle can which took longer than i thought to get a half decent finish but it looked goo enough. Initially i used 2 coasts of filler primer and 5 coats of paint then 2 coats of lacquer but found the finish to be very matte so rubbed the lacquer back and added a couple of coats of paint but this caused a reaction so i had to rub it back and respray.

The end result looks ok but i just can't get a high gloss finish

This is the only photo i took, in hindsight i should have taken more but the weather was against me.

So after 3 weeks and nearly 900 miles the black paint is already showing significant stone chip damage to the point where i'm considering giving plastidip a shot as i don't feel rattle can paint is strong/flexible enough for the job.

I done mine in Matt vinyl at the weekend. Was easier than I though and cheaper than spraying it

Plastidip all the way. I sprayed my spare grill some time in Early December and ran it on the front of my car for 3 months and it resists stones chips better than any wrap or Plastkote! I think because plastidip is spray-on rubber it resisted the damage that wrap or plastikote never can.
