Title: led sidelight problem
Post by: biffobear on February 28, 2014, 10:46:54 pm
I have fitted about 4 different sets of front led sidelight bulbs, every set has had different problems, the latest set come on for a couple of seconds then go out, as soon as I put normal bulbs back in they are always ok, but look grim compared to leds . Anybody had this problem

I bought somee led sidelights and one went, kind of? When I unlocked the car both iluminated but after a few seconds the bulb warning light appears and the drivers sidelight goes out  :rolleye:
Got standard horrible yellow stock sidelights in ATM

I had this with my current side light bulbs.  I put the new ones in they would come on for a few seconds then go out. Put the old bulbs back in and would do exactly the same.  After changing the new and old bulbs around countless time they suddenly stayed on   made no sense to me and still doesnt.

Yes, its so annoying, some are ok for a few days, then one goes out then the next day the other one goes out then one comes back on, but the ones I tried today simply come on for about 2 seconds then go out

I have just ditched my LED sidelights and number plate lights for this reason. More hassle than they are worth I think.

Biffo are they Canbus compatible? I had the same problem with my footwells. The car sends power to the bulbs briefly but as LEDs draw less current (non canbus) the car doesnt detect anything and will cut the feed.

I bought these LED 501's and havent had any problems:

I have leds on the number plates get a little bit of hassle now and again, leds in the interior, they are ok , its just the sidelight bulbs. Is it just the nature of the bulbs? If so why the hell do they sell them

Yes all the bulbs are canbus, in fact the latest ones have it written on them

aaarrrgghhh I bought them must have used all ten of them, I was going to send them back but couldn't be bothered with the hassle

Not a clue! They are a right pain to test too because of the polarities. What headlights do you run next to your led sides? Ive got osram night breakers and they dont look that great.

I have osrams, its just so annoying putting the normal bulbs back cos they look yellow compared to leds

I agree with ^ yellow sidelights look crap
With regards to number plate bulb failures I bought these for mine www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-Number-License-Plate-Lamp-Light-For-VW-Golf-MK4-MK5-Passat-CC-Polo-LV31-/251305665169?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a82fc2291
£20 and the quality is really good and I haven't had any issue in the 5 months I've had them in.
Takes 5 minutes tops to out both In as well  :happy2:

I can't understand why most people buy silly little led bulbs for number plates where the tiny built in resistors burn out and cause various faults, also there quite dim, 20 quid spent on the link above gives you really good lights,  big resistors( not shown in pic) that won't burn out and you'll never get any faults with them

So what is different about Reapers bulbs compared to the 5 different bulbs I have tried, is there better resistors, or is it just down to luck

best resistors you can get IMO of course but havent failed me in 3 years are these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XTEC-LED-LOAD-RESISTOR-KIT-FOR-W5W-501-T10-5w-LEDS-/271051019648

ive used them on side lights (plug and play)
number plate lights (cut and soldered or crimped up connections)
and to add a little exta load to the 21w reverse light as my led one keeps messing about, but not anymore

Do the resistors get hot? Are you able to tuck them into the head light housing or leave them out due to the heat?

I tried several led side lights, that didn't work, desperate for a white light.
I then resorted to'blue ice white' Std. bulbs to get a white light, to match my Xenons really.
I wouldn't contemplate the led fitments, that look life wafers of circuit board soldered together.
If they break apart, under vibrations, you'll end up with bits of broked led boards in yout head lights. so led 'capsuled' are the only ones I'd look at.

Still not happy and really wanting LED without the hassles and wasting money by trial and error I just went for these below
Problem solved and just plug n play :D

I tried these which are cheap and spot on.  Very happy with them.

You'll also need these plug n play resistors which fit into the existing light socket, perfectly :)

Do those resistors get hot? Do you tuck yours inside the headlight housing?
