Just spotted this at my local VW dealer, excuse the poor quality photos, I was battling with low sun and a broken leg!

Although no doubt it'll drive well, and better than the MK6 due to being on the new MQB platform, I'm not sold by the styling. I like the front bumper that vents to what I presume are side mount intercoolers, it reminds me of some porsche's (although they may be radiators on those), but the overall styling of the car looks too prestige and not sporty enough for me.
The matt carbon fibre effect on the seats and interior trim reminds me of someone going mad in a vinyl shop with 3M carbon wrap, carbon fibre on any production car should be real carbon fibre. I also don't like the black uprights to the spoiler, I believe this is the same on the GTI but it reminds me of the old Polo Bluemotion and takes away the aggressiveness of the spoiler.
-
...mmmm love those wheels!
-
That certainly has some presence - love those wheels, but brakes look smaller than I'd have thought!
It is good looking for the mk7 - my general mk7 gripes are the stupid front quarter-light window, and the screen / bonnet angle - just doesn't seem to 'flow' like previous generations.
Still, I would love one!

It's cause they are 19s.
Looks really nice! :driver:
-
Cheers - I thought they were the 19" option. The 18's are a bit too bling for me (if I was to have one). I just wasn't sure of the brake sizes the car runs as standard.
A bit of Googling says they are 340mm discs. Guess they will haul it up well!
-
I could never have a car with seats that colour :surprised:
Guess its an accountant pencil pushers car who never get dirty :P
I wait to see one but the front end is too normal looking for me it just looks like every other normal golf mk7.
It looks more like an r-line than an R to me.
4 tailpipes is just ott and fake carbon just smacks of halfords reject and desperation.
Im disapointed and so wanted to like it , i just hope the leon cupraR is better.

Pretty much this!
-
I had the privilege of seeing a brand new one of these today and had a good poke around it. The carbon seats and door cards looking fantastic in the flesh, the owner had toned down the brushed silver accents by having them wrapped black and it looked soooooo much better! :happy2:

Operation tone down is planned for when the proper one arrives, first will be well used when returned to VW ;)
-
Looks rather ordinary apart from the 4x exhausts
I think the GTi looks better
-
Still not feeling the mk7 R , need to see one in the flesh but might need to see a different colour cause the blue dont do it any favours imo
Prefere the s3 also looking forward to seeing the cupra R the leon fr is looking better than the golf imo
-
I like all of it except for the front, it needs to look a bit more purposeful. I can understand it not being as aggressive as the GTI but it needs to stand out from the R Line and the povety spec models etc

-
My dealer had one today, that's price was £43,000!! 5 door DSG and all the toys. :stupid:
Went to some lucky barstewards that I'm not jealous one bit. :sad1:
-
Pullman Sunderland Tyne & Wear - is putting there's out as a Demo unit from today 40k price tag book your test drive!
-
For 40k there's no way I would be in a golf. Secondhand 911 for me.
-
I know that VW are offering quite big discounts on new GTIs.. up to 4.5k.
Would imagine the R would be a similar deal.
-
With a standard one been £29900 that must have every option and accessory going. You have to be mad to spec 10-13k of options!
-
I think it looks great! IMO it looks better than the GTI - that looked far more like any other Golf than the R!
The GTI is still a cracking car though, plus (forgive me if im wrong!) I believe that Jezza is reviewing it on TopGear tonight
-
^^^^^^^^
A car review on top gear !!!!! What's the world coming to !
-
For 40k there's no way I would be in a golf. Secondhand 911 for me.
for 40k thing I would be looking at a 911 or Nissan gtr
-
have to admit when ordering i have to say i really could see the point of a lot of the options on there and for me just more things to go wrong, by the time you have gone DCC, 19" and DGG you are in for £3.5k of extras
given the deal struck with VW/Dealer on the seat issue i have come out of the deal rather well
will always be the new verses second hand debate however, i don't think a GTR or 911 costs £299 to service for 3 years or 30k
-

Correct
-
An 80 grand car will always have 80 grand car running costs, even when it is a 10 grand car on the used market. I'd imagine a GT-R would be reasonable (ish) on servicing, but the fuel bill will be ferocious unless you pussyfoot it everywhere...
-
A GTR costs a fortune to service. Nissan is the only place to get the oil and they make sure its not cheap. £800 for discs and pads too. Never mind the tyres and fuel costs.
Nissan say it maybe cheap to buy but its a supercar so you will pay supercar running costs . Dont blaim them.
Dont be fooled by been able to buy one for 40k and think it will cost you golf type running costs, it wont.
-
trouble is i bet there are plenty of 911s and GT-Rs out there that have had Golf money spent on them :jumping:
-
Such a nice looking car!
-
I know that VW are offering quite big discounts on new GTIs.. up to 4.5k.

This thru an actual dealer or broker?
-
The R is being advertised on autotrader for £27K, so there are decent discounts to be had already.

-

I'm sure that a 911 can be serviced "economically" if you know a good mechanic. It's when it goes pop that you'd properly sh*t yourself :signLOL:
-
porsche 911 are not expensive to run even going to the dealer yeah big things like brakes and stuff could get expensive but if you are into cars will know you can get same parts cheaper else ware, the non turbo version aren't too bad but check rms seals but i think Porsche can change them cheap enough BUT if it end up with having an engine problem just do this :booty: :signLOL: ( bore scoring) the turbo engine seems better and stronger and without these problems. I think 40k is a bit nuts on a hot hatch and would say 30k is not bad so screw options
-
In my eyes youve got to be mad to spend 40k on a vw golf, R or not...much much much better cars out there, however I do love that alot! That back end is the mutts nuts!!
Imagine that lowered with some wide wheels, would look amazing
-

Nissan is certainly not the only place you can get the oil and I don't think GTR servicing is that bad:

I agree with this though! The Cupra 280 is looking like a promising car, better styled and value than the MK7 GTI imo

Cupra is now on the Seat Configurator. :happy2:
-
Talking of Seats, looks like we're not getting the sporty bucket option according to the configurator...

The Bucket seats as a standalone option and other options including a larger range of colours are expected to be available around June/July, this is rumoured to coincide with the 'performance pack' option being available in the UK (Brembos/Buckets/interior trim highlights/bespoke 19" wheels and Pilot Cup2 tyres)
-
All that money and you still get sh*t seats. Vw really know how to rip the customer off.
Such a model should come standard with sat nav and the rs4 seats.
-
Who thinks this looks better than the R ?

I'm afraid I have to agree! Jays done a fantastic job on this one too! :happy2:

I agree too
S3 would be my choice

Performance bits sound great, but I saw some pics of a Cupra with some awful wheels and body addenda. It looked, to coin a phrase from the young hipsters, gash!

leon looks like a real bargain....... r power for gti money!!!
anybody know if the engine in the leon is an up-boosted gti engine or a toned-down r/s3 engine?
-
The Seat is a better option money wise but I can just never get round how cheap the interiors look and feel. Even my Skoda Octavia VRS had a nicer interior than the Seat. And the Skoda was a lot cheaper!
Would love a new R though. Might end up waiting for the Edition 40 though.

Looking forward to seeing the new RS3, however I suspect it will be near on £50k with the right options!
-
RS3 was always less involving than the S3 8P tho... more of a fast capable every day car than a performance hot hatch...
I'd have the Golf over the equivalent A3 anyday... have you been inside both cars?? Mk7 is FAR nicer.

How come?
-
Heavier engine up front and it being a sportback only?
-
Looking to change the 335i coupe and go back to a hatch this year, been in both the MK7 R and the S3, Golf just isn't a 40k car, you cant even get memory seats, (first world problems!) and Audi doesn't look special enough.
Had an invite to look at M235i next week, not as practical but had good reports :happy2:
Neil
-
The two are not £40k cars. You can pick up brand new cars for less than £28k. You really don't need to spec them with all the crap that people do these days.
-
I simply cant be seen in a car for less than 40k, I've got my reputation to think off!! :signLOL:

Obviously in your humble opinion..
However, having owned both, and still own the RS3, I would have to disagree at every level with this. The RS3 is by far the superior hot hatch, especially now with decent tyres on(F1's) , rather than the horrible and hard con ti's it came with - The handling is so much more responsive now, with less understeer. I always found the S3 was a better drive after the re-map, the steering just felt better?? Low to mid 4's to 60mph on the RS3 , certainly puts it in some interesting territory.
Ive test driven the new S3, in manual guise, and it seemed miles off the RS3 for performance, but the gearbox can give a similar illusion.
Back On topic, I like the look of the Mk7 R, however I can't stand the quad exhausts, very overkill in the looks department, and I fear I would miss the 5 pot burble, if I changed, and I have considered it..... To be fair it's my wife's car, and she's happy in the RS, perfect for the school run......... On the subject of options, we love gadgets. My new kombi has £9K of factory options, then I spent another £6k on it on arrival :surprised: But its very special!
I like the interiors on both, we have some Mk7's on my fleet, and as above been in the new S3. Both interiors work for me :happy2:

Oli, have u mapped your RS3 yet? Those numbers u quoted are standard I assume?
-
RS3 is not a hot hatch back. It's like £40k+ and is far too nose heavy! i'm not saying it's a bad car but it's not a drivers car,
And of course S3s are going to be slower when an RS3 comes with like 335bhp and an S3 8P comes with about 265...
-
On an unrelated note because I don't want to get into a pissing contest..........and on topic with the thread...

I think he means the new S3 @ 300hp which interestingly enough has the exact same power to weight ratio as the rs3
Have to also agree with the options debate. Sat nav, cruise control, front and rear sensors, heated seats, and hands free is surely all the options one really needs in a car?
-
Ahh I see.
Power to weight though doesn't always tell how a car "feels" :)
Options are there for people to add the options that they want haha.
-
i agree, the new s3 will handle better, and the rs3 will still be faster in a straightline over 100mph

Im referring to the new S3, in the comparison .
And Im confused how a £40k price tag, and the fact its nose heavy, doesn't make it a hot hatchback. Come and have a proper drive of mine, Im sure your opinion will change :happy2:
Anyway, we've 'debated' this before, and once again its going nowhere. Am happy to chat via PM, to stop going off topic

No idea.

i am told when you are of younger age its a bit more difficult to ascertain speed differential, i did pass a mk5 on the M40 just sitting in the f*cking middle lane by the side of a convoy of which in fairness would have held up 40 tonnes of Stobbart finest
fortunately i've known i've been a nob for years fella :drinking:
my R arrives in about 10 weeks without sh*t seats :happy2:

Back off topic again, I just picked up a Leon brochure (they didn't have a Cupra in stock :sad1: ) and it says buckets are available from July onwards. No mention of any other go faster bits, though.
