Hi...is the 1.9 tdi any good? Any issues to be aware of?

It's a pretty solid and reliable engine, main issue I have with them is they are very noisy and agricultural compared to a modern diesel or any petrol engine.

It's a more reliable lump than the 2.0 TDI PD's (in either 140 or 170bhp output)

It's the engine from the MK4 Golf TDI which, providing you change the oil at the required intervals should go on and on and on. . .

Better fuel economy than the 2.0 TDI  :happy2:

I've had no issues with mine touch wood! Buy depending on the mileage you may want to take in to consideration the flywheel, I had mine done on warranty ( free  :happy2:) I didn't want to pay for it at a later stage as it cost like £900. I wouldn't worry though.

You can remap them to the same power as a 140 gt, you get a lot more power/ torque and your fuel economy is incredible.

the 1.9 has is a good engine and well proven and if you get one mated to a 6 speed gear box have good mpg...The early gttdi 2.0 had the problems but after 2006 vw sorted the issues out and also they return 55mpg on the motor way

I had a BXE in my Altea and it was gutless, improved with a remap. If it's a 5spd then you are always changing gear.

There are known problems now with some engine variants where conrod's burst through the engine.
It needs a new turbo too, and has the same weepy intercooler hose clips as the mk4 did.

I much preferred my 2.0 BKD being honest, though if you can stretch to it get a CR engine as they are way better than the PD.

My first MK5 was a. 1.9 tdi Jetta which I drove for 45k miles/18 months and apart from needing a new clutch and DMF it was faultless. Yes the BXE engine is gutless in its standard form but that can be improved with a remap. Ensure you keep on top of servicing and change the oil using Castrol edge 5/30 or VW Gold (same thing, different label) and change the fuel filter every 10-15kmiles.

Trim level. Don't get the classic as that is poverty spec, SE or even better Sport as it has the 6 speed gearbox is what you should be looking at.

Couple of guys at work have the 1.9tdi on a 56 and 08 plate, both are suffering from flywheel issues which need replacing, the clutch judders on take off, other than that solid and reliable

The DMF rattle is unfortunately is always going to be an issue due to the nature of its design and will fail at some point. If when starting the engine from cold there is a rattle which goes when the clutch peddle is down, its the DMF is on on the way out and will need replacing. Replace both the DMF and clutch at the same time.

The TDI trinity of checks - Turbo, DMF and service history.

Naturally you will want a car with the lowest possible mileage, certainly look at those with higher mileage (100k+) BUT ensure the cam belt has been changed at 70k miles, servicing is up to date and everything works as it should. That includes the aircon compressor.

As everyone has pretty much stated above; DMF's are an issue with the 1.9Tdi.
I bought mine in 2012 with 38k on the clock, I had a Revo map installed at 50k, along with an injector failure which cost quite a bit to replace.
Now have the dreaded flywheel / clutch judder on idle, so that will need changing and im on 53k miles right now.

If you look after them; regular services with good quality parts and If you get a remap, you feed the power through instead of givin' it full throttle at a low RPM, the car should last a while without things going wrong.
Lovely cars, mine returns 60+MPG on a motorway run, I'm going to remove my mudflaps soon to increase that.

Also stated above, look for a good spec car.
I went for the TDI Match, which has MFSW, ipod dock in the armrest and highline display.
