Title: How to Use Wurth Engine Flush and Change Oil on 2.0 TFSi
Post by: vRS Carl on October 05, 2009, 02:44:31 pm
Ok here's another Tutorial. This is done on a MK2 Skoda Octavia vRS but i would imagine the process is the same or pretty similar for all 2.0 TFSi Engines

Before i start the usual disclaimer

NEITHER I NOR MK5GolfGTI WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF YOU UNDERTAKE THE PROCESS DETAILED BELOW AND SOMETHING GOES WRONG. YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

Ok formalities out the way here we go.

You will need the following:

Jack
Axle Stands x2
19mm Socket/Ratchet/Spanner
36mm Socket/Ratchet/Spanner
T25 Torx Bit and Driver
T30 Torx Bit and Driver
6 Litres of Oil (Longlife or standard depending on your servicing regime)
1 Can of Wurth Engine flush (will treat up to 6 Litres of oil)
1 x Oil Filter and Rubber Gasket (come together) Part no. - 06D 115 562
1 x Oil Sump Plug and Captive Seal - Come as one part from Dealer.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000906.jpg&hash=c546143811acbc5daaed812812752bf455ac1efc)

Firstly jack the car up and remove the Under tray. This area there are 3 x T30 Torx Screws

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000900.jpg&hash=0f4bdcd3f748ff1af17edb1e43bd799fba8b256c)

This area there are 4 x T25 Torx Screws (same for other side)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000901.jpg&hash=aa8c999b3344f842642fcbec2199da94212b6a1d)

Now check that you have the correct size socket/spanner to remove the Oil Filter and Sump Plug. You don't wanna be driving round with engine flush in there all the time

Now check the oil in the engine is at least halfway between min and max on the dipstick then get the engine to Normal Operating temperature.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000904.jpg&hash=0a1c28db8b2335276922257ff9c3da25625ccc40)

Once that is done Switch off engine and add the Wurth Engine flush.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000905.jpg&hash=42dce0785251c7753f0ce3ac2ee21e5c52753cef)

Now Start engine and leave running for 10 Mins

Once 10 mins has passed stop engine and get container ready. Undo oil sump plug (beware it may be quite hot!!!) and then catch oil that comes out. I removed the dipstick and oil cap before doing this just so there was no suction at all to hold anything in.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000908.jpg&hash=d98df2aeeb9c63651ffcbd28f70fcdb9eb7a01d1)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000909.jpg&hash=45ee225986ba1aae405da98fb4c81807b80b1574)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000910.jpg&hash=a33830e20728773758204b03a8eec43b248eb0ba)

Once all oil out Undo oil Filter and again have container ready to catch the oil.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000917.jpg&hash=1177c5e2872cd2ddbcda4b9f81c47a3d7ee7656c)

Whilst container is catching all the the oil remove old filter and gasket. The Gasket has a small tab indicated by the Screwdriver. Ensure that is uppermost (i.e. you can see it) when putting the new gasket in

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000911.jpg&hash=f9c4ec2aaaabf04bf91e8f2593b22544e2626ac2)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000913.jpg&hash=0e4a7d46435ae0dc6c4ba978022f1993dde91b3f)

Next get new gasket coat with fresh clean oil and place into filter holder

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000914.jpg&hash=6fb579931aff682a3cc146cf2566a1de98dfdcbe)

Put new filter into holder and reattach to engine. Tighten up just hand tight then 1/4 of a turn.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000915.jpg&hash=8d1da74e8710bad714071b00940671e98aaea578)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000916.jpg&hash=1fe429887aa54d95459bf4905c3d21307543ca00)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000917.jpg&hash=1177c5e2872cd2ddbcda4b9f81c47a3d7ee7656c)

Now i put 1/2 litre of clean oil through the engine just to flush any remaining cr@p out.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000918.jpg&hash=4ffd3470b6b87a414de5c130749542c8c75c28c2)

Re-apply oil Sump Plug and tighten up to 30NM or Hand tight then 1/2 turn

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000919.jpg&hash=68e9c24fd21229690a418805bb3a1300b49723b0)

Now apply fresh oil. The vRS is supposed to take only 4.7 litres (Check Manual for how much your engine holds) but i filled up till dipstick was indicating as per the pic. Now start the engine let it run for 30 secs then topped up to the same place on the dipstick. I used 5.5 litres in total

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000920.jpg&hash=13977aaa7923ae124c21e1f0fea8d592ef2fcbb4)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FTaufe%2FBrisky_Pics%2FP1000921.jpg&hash=7ae53ba2cad1392e187a53f90381e0540fcf8bef)

Once all topped up run engine for 2 mins check dipstick again and if you have VCDS check for faults ( i had none )

Now refit under tray and lower the car. Reapply dipstick and Oil Cap.

Job done

Will take 45-60mins

HTH

Comments good or bad welcome

There is no stopping you now is there!!

There is actually a special tool that fits to the bottom of the filter housing to drain oil from.

Has anyone got any input on the pros & cons of flushing the oil?

The local VW dealer does not recommend flushing as it can cause more harm than good.

Well my Local Skoda dealer are now recommending it with a service so i guess it's just horses for courses.

Your best bet is just look at what it can do and decide if your engine needs its.

It's just a plastic tube that screws into the bottom and opens the small valve inside.

....

A great How-To, Mater! :congrats:

I just Google'd "engine flush" and saw all sorts of strong advice NOT to use engine flush, so this has naturally put doubts in my mind. One thing which seems clear is that it will invalidate your VW warranty if you are still within it. It may be better to change oil more frequently - I do mine every 10k miles, regardless.

Ta very much RR

Well it doesn't invalidate your Skoda Warranty as my Local Dealer is advertising it to be done in conjunction with servicing.

I can't see how VW would claim this would invalidate your warranty to be honest. I wouldn't recommend it every service but certainly every 50k miles. As you can see from the Tutorial ive done nearly 50K (albeit mostly motorway miles and its a 07 plate car  :surprised:) and still got about 4K to go till my 3rd Variable service. Plus with the high state of tune on the engine i just thought it couldn't hurt

I've done around 400miles since i did it and i checked for faults etc with VCDS today and there wasn't any. Also checked the colour of the oil on the Dipstick and it is still clear so hopefully i haven't done any damage  :scared:

^^^^
If your Skoda dealer is promoting it then that negates the warranty comments I read via Google, which of course are just that - 'Experts' on the internet.

You have clearly been very thorough indeed and so it's very doubtful you have done any damage. My understanding is that it's important to leave as little flush residue as possible [cue for Hedge!].

Personally I'm neither for or against engine flushing - I'm interested and keen to learn both pros and cons.

I was worried about the flush remaining but as it was mixed in with the old oil which i drained i thought it would be ok. But just to be on the safe side i left the Sump plug off and poured about 1/2 litre of fresh clean oil into the filler cap and let that drain right through before applying sump plug etc

So hopefully it will have got rid of it all.

Will see if my Valves and Pistons all melt

I do seem to remember a TSB citing that the use of such flushes was not approved by Skoda.  I'll have a look if I remember when I get home.

The problem is Carl that the dealers are merely franchises and often they do 'go it alone', for instance they aren't restricted on oil etc.

Gotcha.

But surely then if there were any problems arising from it the dealer would be liable for any repairs.

I did ask them when they recommended it be used and they said pretty similar to what i was thinking. Or to be precise once every 50k miles.

Hope i aint foooked the engine then  :scared:

....I reckon that if this stuff seriously fooked the engine it would already have been withdrawn from the market plus lots of lawsuits flying around.

Probably just a case of needing to use very carefully etc - Which appears to be what you have done.

Just because VAG don't endorse the product doesn't necessarily mean it will harm your engine.

I use it and always have, it works really well. We are a Forte dealer, and sell it to our customers, the results are outstanding and never had a problem.

Never heard the warranty issue problems either, I know loads of dealers the use it.

The definative answer on engine flush will appear on both erWin, and also ETKA.  erWin will detail the specific procedure, and ETKA will list the specific parts.

As others have said, most stealers are franchises, and don't give a toss about the long-term reliablity of the cars they sell and service.  Just look how many official franchised dealers use Quantum oils - they are only meant to use genuine premium brand oils - Quantum are for only independent workshops.

Onto specifics of engine flushing agents.  Providing that the engine oil has been changed per recommended intervals (and the correct spec quality oil is used and the filter changed) - then there is absolute no need for engine flushes.

Flushing oils and flushing additives were designed for old skool dino mineral oils, or when oil change interval had exceeded the recommended interval by some margin (usually more than 50% over) and became heavily sludged, or when incorrect oil was used.  Another specialist requirement was in two-stroke engines when changing from mineral based oils to vegetable oils . . . . ahhhhhh, those headdy daze of the smell of Castor R racing oils . . . .

So, in summary - DON'T use flushing oils or additives.  :P
