Thought I would post here rather than having it just attached to my other topic which is around Colour Coding.
I am trying to remove my whole Rear Bumper
I have undone all three torx screws in the arches on either side and also removed the lights fine and the torx screws underneath these. Also removed the 2 torx screws underneath near each wheels where it had some of the inner arch attached.
I am however hitting problems with the ones in the pics below as in the 2 screws in the arches I cannot see what torx or type they are and when get a torx slotted in it just seems to mangle the screw so help here please.
Also the 2 underneath in the pics, can get to them fine but they turn slowly with massive amount of pressure on them and do not seem to be getting loose so am I doing something wrong here

PMd buddy :happy2:

Well no joy still,
I have managed to get the 2 screws undone which were under the wheel arch.
Got one out clean after some tugging and pushing but the other one did not and the actual upper part of the bumper I am removing was damaged where the screw hole was :sad1:
The other 2 under the car in the other pics I just cannot get off, the torx hole are just shaving away when try to unscrew and cannot even seem to lever them out even if they get damaged and I can buy some new ones so I am really stuck here as totally soaked them in WD40
Bumper back on with some holding screws until I figure out what to do :sad1:
-
once them ones on the bottom get rusty they can seize up quite easily, other than sawing the heads off the trying to screw it back in , using pipe gripe or mole grips.
once they are out re tap the hole buy new ones use copper grease on the threads, sorry i cant be more help
-
As SI says moles grips with the understanding they've got to come out to make progress!
-
infact if you really want to get adventurous find something to protect bumper, get a file and file 2 flats opposite each other on the head, get a good adjustable spanner and get em out
-
Thanks Chaps for the advice.
Think I have resigned myself to knowing these are coming out damaged no matter how I do it.
Mole grips sounds good but cannot seem to get enough gap between the Head and the bodywork to likely be able to fit the mole grips on but will have a go at this maybe at the weekend now.
My other thinking is just chopping the head off which will free the bumper and then deal with the rest of the screw once I have more room. Probably need to get a little hacks saw or something to do that
-
That's the attitude I can see the bumper off already :happy2:
-
If you want the head off drill it out, you have a torx hole in the center to start it off

Does seem like the quicker option but with my skills my next photo will be of the drill poking through into the boot :rolleye:
I have a drill but not a hack saw so might try the drill first.
Will update at the weekend :happy2:

Ive just had to remove those two rear screws with a pair of pliers. Replacements from VW SEAT etc 46p each
Copper grease when you replace them :happy2:

How did you manage to get enough gap between the screw head and bodywork?

Used a flathead screwdriver :happy2:

Sorry to hear your having problems mate.
Hope get sorted asap :happy2:
Those lower ones are tough, will come out tho.

Cheers mate although I blame you for selling me a rear bumper at a good price which started me off haha.
Hopefully will get sorted this weekend when have more time to cut these torx screws out and then fit the new bumper
-
Ha ha, sorry :ashamed:
Other option is to cut a small slit in the plastic of the bumper just behind the torqs that are stuck. Could then open them out and pull past them.
Or do you have access to a Dremiel? To cut the heads off them.

Didnt think of that but another good idea. I will stick that on my list as I think whichever way I use the Bumper might get slightly damaged but in terms of selling I am not expecting that much for them. Plus will be buying new torx screws as the ones I am taking out are in bad condition.
Not got access to a Dreimel.
Will see on saturday as could give it a go tonight to take off but would get too dark for when fitting the new one. It is good to hit small issues as at least you learn from it after you bave through all the swearing and stopping yourself taking a hammer to it :)

No worries, any help give me a shout.
Bottom ones are the 30 torq. Mine we little b*****ds too.

Nice one,
Don't suppose you know the dimension and sizes of the other screws and also where is a likely place to get them as checked halford's, b&q and even screwfix and cannot seem to find any. Only ones I could find are on the link below but not sure if the right ones.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-WHEEL-ARCH-INNER-LINER-SPLASH-GUARD-TORX-SCREW-SELF-TAPPING-5-x-16-mm-/400622722685?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5d46f99e7d
The ones I am looking as well as the ones you have mentioned(30 ones) are the other pics I sent of the 2 screws on the inner arch that I had trouble getting out. There the ones that fasten the upper Bumper to the car.
All other as in the ones under the lights and the 3 on the inner arch to the lining bit are fine.

Nice one, spot on and will stop me buying nails now and hammering them in :surprised:
-
Best to go to local VW dealer mate. Take a printout of above.
Be only a few £s for correct bolts.

I had this happen to me. What was supposed to be a 15 minutes job took 45 minutes. If can somehow get behind the fixings behind the screw and stop it from spinning or cut off i advice you too that as replacing the little white fixings are only like 60p each last time i brought them.. Good luck and hope it works out or helps...

Thanks chap,
Once I have the weekend and plenty of time to remove hopefully should be fine and then I am hoping the fitting is much easier once I have the right screws.
-
Well finally fitted( not 100% thought but secure for now).
In the end I had to cut through the plastic bumper underneath to pull the screw out as could not loosen them from the bolt as looked totally seized. Also one of the screws under the arch I could not get off I had to break open the screw hole on the bumper part I was removing and then snap the clip off and the screw came out.
Phoned my local VW dealer who advised they could order the screws in so will sort this out next week.
So below are the before and after shots and at least to me looks like a an improvement and still to get colour coded yet .
Apologies for the dirty car

Cheers, will look much better when colour coded but going to scout around for a cheaper price than 150+VAT but may just plump for that as if it is too cheap then expect a cheap result
Looking back it was well worth the effort though. In the end had the jigsaw out and alter trying to cut the bolt and snapping the cutting head I went for the easy option of cutting the plastic and slipping the bolt out as was not really planning on selling my standard bumper anyway :happy2:
-
Glad you've got it sorted! It's a really good mod getting rd of those horrid standard rear valance.
By the way, it seems your NSR tyre is fitted backwards.

Handy list this! :happy2:
Changed my bumper to GTI yesterday. Had to take the whole bumper off in the end. Wish I had done that from the beginning, would have saved myself an hour of swearing!!
Deffo worth doing though, looks mega! :congrats:

Cheers mate,
NSR tyre fitted backwards??. I am pretty dumb with these things so do you mean I have it fitted to the wrong side of the car and if so how do I tell as likey may have the others fitted wrong also so need to do a swap :scared:

Sorted, just went out and my rear tyres are the wrong way around so going to swap them over in a bit. Front ones are fine so I am only 50% :stupid:
