Title: Rattling cam chain when warm
Post by: john87 on March 04, 2014, 09:40:59 pm
A friend's had his mk5 GTI now for about three months, and it has rattled when warmed up ever since he got it.

Being an 06 plate, it's most likely the cam chain/tensioner issue, but does anyone know what he should expect to pay to have the items replaced?

So far he's been quoted between £300 - £1000 for the job

Cheers, John

I had mine done last year. I had the chain and tensionser done and cost me 310 fitted I was unlucky as after having it done we realised that the adjuster was the part that was more the problem so had to have that changed about 2 weeks later. The adjuster is expensive the part alone was 308 quid with discount and then labour to fit all in didnt see much change from 800 quid. I had a quote from vw for juat the chain and tensioner and was quoted 1100 as they said it would take them 7 hours to do. I sat and waited while it was done at a garage that was recomended to me and was done in just over 2 hours. Now sounds like a kitten . People say they sound like deisels but mine definatly sound like a petrol again. Hope this helps sam.
