Title: My mates new mk5 gti (few issues tho)
Post by: big eck on March 12, 2014, 03:46:43 pm
Ok my mate bought this off a member on here on Sunday there from Wrexham. We travelled from Central Scotland so it was a bit of a trek.

Anyways, we got there and gave the car a once over and a very quick test drive. Bar a few marks and bits which we didn't expect (and was left off the ad) it was a good enough car so the deal was done and we headed back up the M6.

This is where things started to go wrong. We got as far Carlisle services and my mate turned into the car park looking pissed right off, it turned out to be for good reason. The exhaust was blowing badly, very badly. We thought it might have came loose at the connector so we jacked it up and I went under to find this. A 1" wide 2" long hole in the 3" downpipe right on the elbow. If you look closely you can see the patch that was welded onto it to cover the hole. The guy claimed to have no knowledge of any damage and said it must have been the company that caused it when they fitted it

We made or way loudly back up the road when the car started to run a touch rough. The next morning the idle was very bad so we opened the bonnet to find this. It was wrapped up in black insulation tape so was very well hidden. It worked its way loose on the way home and was hanging off. Anyone any idea what this pipe is and where it goes to as that's obviously the cause of the rough idling.

So that's the eventful few days of mk5 ownership my mates had lol. Not quite what he imagined.

looks like the exhaust hanger has been ripped off and its put the big hole in where its welded on to the exhaust as it goes into the subframe

Funny you should say that as the hanger was missing. There was a piece of metal just hanging on it and you could see where the welds were to try and patch it up. Very poor show from either the seller or fitting company IMO.

Looks like it was blowing for a while, and maybe coincedence that it dropped of on way home, he must have heard it hitting off the underside of car when driving?

^^^^^^well said

How come you didn't hear it during the test drive?

Do you think he had temporarily bodged it? And then it fell off as u were on the long drive home?

The test drive was spot on as I was in the car with him.

I was also directly behind him all the way back up the road so would have seen something the size of a hanger bounce out from under the car lol.

It looks as if the hangers been ripped off and they've tried to patch it up and the long drive has taken its toll on the poor welds. It is an easy fix but as said that shouldn't have even been an issue.

Does anyone know what that pipe in the 2nd pic is for???

Haha yeah my bad.

Also the paint warranty?  Do you mean in terms of corrosion.  Thats 12 years when I asked VW last week although if your'e talking about the front arches thats not covered but is done by VW under good will, theres a massive thread on here about it.

Although they will check the authenticity of the paint to make sure its VW Genuine as it turned out my was not  :sad1:

That's good to know bud. The front wings were done last year. There's a rust scab at the bottom of the passenger door and sill right on the side skirt. Its deffo under the paint corrosion as its badly bubbled. Hopefully they'll sort it FOC if the warranty is indeed 12yrs.
