Title: How do/can you remove rear discs without removing carriers
Post by: Airz182 on March 15, 2014, 09:32:00 pm
Planning of getting new disc and pads for the rear next week, and painting them before installation.
Had the wheel off today to get the dust shield off from the rear caliper.
Managed to get the caliper off, but couldn't get the disc off past the carrier.
Is there a special tool to get the carrier off?? Or a certain way to shimmy the disc past the carrier?
If this is the case Tho i don't really want to scratch my
New disc when fitting them. Any help would be appreciated thanks

Tool - 12spline or 3 square but can't remember if it's M12 or M14

This is it

Mind there tight so you'll need a breaker bar and height - ramps the job!

i did some back plates at work  on a gttdi and i had to remove the carrier and wheel bearing but youcan cut a piece of that slides behind the carrier--The tools are m14 and m18 sockets

you should try undoing the multi splined bits with an extra drive shaft in the way, i've never sworn so much in my life

Tried doing this the other weekend and the carrier bolts are a nightmare to get access to if you're only doing the job on your driveway. If you can manage to loosen them up with the shocks/springs etc in the way they it's obviously a straight forward job but like Si-R32 I was losing the will to live! Just changed the pads and got the discs changed by someone with a lot more patience than me (albeit with the benefit of a lift) :P

Im going to reattempt it at weekend now i now what tools to use, i am doing it on the driveway!!
The rear disc dont seem that old so maybe wernt changed that long ago!!  So the bolts may not be so tight!!
Luckly everything else ive undone so far has been copper greased!  So fingers crossed!!

Dont know if it's any use to you mate, but theres a video (link below) which is handy in case you need to double check anything or whatnot. Sure you've got it all under control since you've done the pads and whatnot...

You will have a fighting chance if you can get your car on a set of decent high drive on ramps or some really tall axle stands, if not dont bother and pay someone £10 or whatever at a garage to crack them off for you.

I managed to get the disk off without taking the carrier off, takes a little bit of jiggling but can be done!

Did you try getting the new disc back on yet?
