Title: Bodyshop painting prices?

Afternoon everyone!

Just wanted to pick your brains and experience getting professional paintwork done. My new car is keyed across 4 panels and have had quotes of between 380 and 400 for this work.

So £100 a panel using water or solvent based paint  and 2 pack lacquer.

Priced 120 for front and 120 for rear bumper.

Is that reasonable for professional work?

Better to go with solvent or water based paints?

Surely you should be checking around your local area because painting prices can vary from all over the country

your painter should give you information on whether to use solvent or waterbased... pretty sure solvent is not legal anymore.... you've done some quotes obviously so go with whatever quote you're happy with.

Not had paintwork needed to be redone before until now so just wanted a rough idea of price.

All but one of the painters I approached use water based and factory paint is water based too? I am no pro with painting and paintwork so Im relying on the knowledge of others. The painter who uses solvent base couldnt give me a reason other than he prefers it. Said visually no difference between water and solvent base so dont know what to make of it really :/ . If he can still get solvent base then must still be legal?

Whats the pros and cons of solvent or water based?

That is correct all factory paint since like 2000s or so has been waterbased, I think long before that as well - maybe even the mid 90's.

I am not a painter but waterbased paint is what's used at all the bodyshops I've had work done by and is used by factories across the world so why use something else? imo of course.

My friend has a bodyshop, just outside of manchester.

I dont know if thats close or not, but he is excellent and I highly recommend him. let me know if you would like his details

Solvent is arguably the better product.

There's no difference in the finish once applied, there only referring to the base all colours are solvent clear coat anyway.

The problem now is water was brought in to act on voc for health and safety, all of the big boys who make quality paint don't really do a solvent line so your talking b brand paints when talking solvent.

I still prefer to paint in solvents. Nothing could touch DuPont centari, but that's personal preference.

But times move on. As does technology.
