Title: Dodds Škoda Octavia vRS
Post by: dodds-gttdi on April 01, 2014, 08:05:38 pm
Ok, so I traded my Golf GT TDi in for a Škoda the other day.  The Golf had come to a point where I needed to spend a significant amount of money on it, or sell/part-ex. West End Škoda gave me a decent value for my Golf so a deal was struck.

Details/Spec:

2010 '60' plate
Octavia vRS TDi (CR) 170
Corrida Red
Full Black Leather
Heated Front Seats
Cruise Control
Front and Rear Parking Sensors
xenon so with AFS (Bending Function)
Auto Lights (Light Assist)
Rain Sensor
Standard Neptune Alloys in 18"
Kenwood DNX520vbt

Photos below, but it's bog standard for now. I got a little ahead of myself the other day and almost had a Darkside Downpipe, BCS Exhaust and Remap bought, before I even had the car!!  :surprised:

The usual photo, bog standard:

Detailed shot of the Xenons. Seriously bright (my first car with Xenons) and I love the Dynamic/Bending function:

A little bit of coding, set the DRLs to dim to 50% when the indicator is on:

Sneak peek of the interior. Better shots will come with the better weather:

Been busy on eBay already!!

Please note that the front badge part number is not correct! :fighting: but will I'll be able to coerce it on. Skoda do make a perfect fit badge. :stupid: The part number is identical to the rear badge but the 'suffix' is 'AAUL' instead of just 'A'.

Settling for a Stage 1 Remap just now. Waiting to hear back when I can book it in. Will also opt for front and rear HEL braided hoses to help the brakes. Pads are new front and rear so will leave them in for now.

Also got my eye on a LED Columbus Unit to replace the Kenwood. I like the Kenwood but would rather have the OEM unit. So I'll have a Kenwood DNX520vbt for sale soon.

With the Columbus I'll look at putting in the OEM Bluetooth. Got a good idea what I want/need and have half the bits sitting in my garage already! Amazing what you can acquire over time.

Review of the comparison Columbus vs Kenwood to come soon.

Any mods on the above Standard spec will be listed in the post below. :happy2:

Looks lovely, I've never been in a cr 170, would like to test drive one soon as we have decided the mrs car (mk5 gt Tdi) will be traded in for a octavia vrs....

Leigh, the 170 CR is a big improvement over the golf pd tdi engine. Much smoother (vibration and power) and less noise, even in a Škoda, which I suspect has less noise insulation than a Golf.

Looks nice. Good work retrofitting the RNS 510 straight away, I'd have done exactly the same!  :happy2:

Be interested to see how it looks with the new badges as I haven't seen that done on  a Mk2 FL Octavia before.

Yeah, that's the plan anyway. GTI World (part of Edinburgh VW Western) are offering 30% off Revo maps atm!!)

i have just put a kenwood dnx in to my octavia vrs

Ed, yeah loving it compared to the Golf. Although I guess if I compared it to a mk6 golf (GTD) I'd probably prefer the Golf. The interior is a very nice place to be, although I have noticed a few corners that Škoda has cut. For example: No sun visor lights!! Yet there are lights on the bottom of the doors. :stupid:

is strange how they decide what to give and what to take away

GTD is better if i'm honest, but not worth the extra money you have to pay for it.

Very true. I priced up matching cars (age, mileage, extras) and there seemed to be approx £3k difference!!

Cheers mate, it can/should only get better. After fitting the RNS510 on weds I was determined to get the front and rear OPC showing up up the display. After a full hour mucking about with VCDS I finally achieved it. Had to activate the full extra/secret menu in the Radio Adaptations (Channel 50 value 1).

Chuffed it's all working now.

Next job is to fit the microphone for voice control and my newly acquired 7P6 035 730 Rev J Bluetooth Module. :happy2:

It's the little things that make the difference. Set of new badges to go on the car; front, rear and wheel caps  so far:

Glad another has joined the CR170 TDI engine club Dodds  :happy2: :drinking:

I genuinely think it's a cracking engine. 18 months in and with a stage 1 Revo tune, I'm very impressed and made the right choice to have an equally 'fast' but cheaper to run car than my MY06 k03 GTI.

The vRS looks really well trimmed and suits red very well.
The new grille looks great!

I thought you were serious about the theft of the original one at first  :surprised:

Look forward to the progression  :happy2:

Cheers mate. Tempted to get a cheap second hand one, and get it properly de-chromed and matte painted. Think I went a little thin on the Plastidip.

The Octavia is gone, long live the Octavia!!

Jokes, whilst it's in at GTI World this week I've been given a courtesy car. I have a smile on my face most of the time driving it. I can't believe how tiny it is, how wobbly it is and how weird it feels to drive. Don't mind it for the daily commute but it is amazing how little there it to the car. Would not like to involved in a RTA with a HGV. :scared: thankfully the other half doesn't like it. At all! Pretty nippy for a 3 cylinder. Not sure it it's a 1.0 or 1.2. Must be about 7-800kgs all in. Will go look it up now.

Ha ha!! It's a 999cc, a pint sized engine with a good little growl at about 5k revs and it can stop on a sixpence. Literally 60-0 in about 5 metre!!  :driver:

Can't find any model trim details about it (tempted to plug it into VCDS) but according to Parkers it has the following specs:

it could be a Take Up, move Up, Rock Up, High Up or Black Up sorry, Up Black, Up White or Groove Up. And for the Geordies there's an E-Up!
0-60mph: 12.
Powah: 73 bhp
Insurance: Grp 1!
Weight: 929kg

Looks like  a Move Up because of the wheel trims, which would make it the 60PS version

They are good fun little cars. I've driven that and the Mii and found them to be great around town. If they ever bring out a quick GT version I'd probably consider swapping the Golf...

I would queue to get my hands on an Up! GT. Either a 1.2 TSi turbo (105 PS) or a 1.6 FSi engine. Hopefully the turbo so it can be mapped. Probably 16" alloys, I'd love to see how Montreal 2's look on an Up! or a 16" version of the Watkins Glen alloys. Any budding Photoshoppers reading this? ;)

Finally the Up! GT should be available on Lapiz Blue, what the Mk7 R comes in.

Holy thread revival Batman!!

I'm back, kinda. Been a good while since I've posted and not a lot has happened. Except reaching 98k miles on the Octavia already!  :driver:
New job means I work 2 minutes from a tuning garage (HQ Performance Dalgety Bay). I got talking to them and one thing led to another and I got a rolling road run. Only 18 months after getting a Stage 1 REVO remap.

Results were 166bhp and 266 FtLb at the wheels. No idea of flywheel figures as they don't give any. Potentially 210bhp at the wheels I think. Not bad for nothing but a remap. Standard intake, filter and exhaust.

Just a follow up post: managed to get an OK trade in price for my Octavia and left with a 2014 Leon FR 184. Love the car, much more reminiscent of the Golf, loving being back in a hatchback. Handling is very good (for a standard diesel). So much more grip and flat cornering. Suspension is a little stiffer so you feel more of the road (not always a bad thing). Photos and details to follow...
