No when you're on a bike you can be pretty much wherever you like.

He probably could have made that turn as well from his current position, but probably panicked and froze up or jammed the brakes on sitting the bike up.

From his entry to that corner he had no chance of making it, his quick thinking saved his life. Obviously didn't know the roads well at all
