I assume it's Yankie land but some interesting comments.

Yanks have crap petrol compared to us:
most engines are designed to take regular gas, which has an octane rating of about 87
Our regular petrol is 95 RON, and super duper petrol is 97/98/99+RON. Remember the quoted power output on a GTI is only applicable to 98+RON.
-
Stealth - the yanks use a different method for octane ratings compared to the rest of the world. They use something called the 'anti-knock index' (AKI), whereas we use the 'research octane number' (RON). AKI is supposed to be slightly more accurate at determining octane ratings when compared to RON - but in my VHO, the jury is out on this, if RON is good enough for Ze Germans, the Cheese Eating Surrender Monkies, along with Blighty's own . . . .
Because of this AKI and RON cannot be compared exactly. However, IIRC, yankie 87 AKI is equivalent to our 95 RON. The real difference for the shyteness of yankie go-go juice is their high sulfur content. Europe uses 'ultra low sulfur petrol' (ULSP) - hence why we can run our cars in lean-burn stratified mode, whereas the yanks can't. If they were to use lean-burn, their skies would turn a pungent orange - from the nasty sulfur dioxides.
You're spot on about the GTI needing 98 brew, and its quoted power. It also applies to fuel consumption too. :happy2:

Thanks, T_T. I knew there was a difference in fuel quality but just assumed the octane ratings were comparable.

Why does my gti recommend 95RON on the fill flap then?

It may well have 95RON on the filler flap, but it should also have 98RON in bigger, bolder typeface. However, IIRC, I think there were a small batch of GTIs which only had 95 on the flap. :sad1:
Aside of what your flaps state, the official technical data sheets, sales brochures, and the actual handbook all state the GTI should be run on 98RON in order to achieve the quoted power output and fuel economy figures. As others have said (and the official literature), running it on 95RON will not only lower the power, it will also drink more fuel - so its false economy running it on 95.

I thought that 95 figure was only on the imported ones?

Don't think so - the few I've heard of were genuine UK cars. I've only ever seen an import, and didn't look inside its flaps - ooo-errrr.
Don't forget - in mainland Europe, super unleaded has to be 98 RON (or above :P) - but here in the UK, super unleaded can be 97 RON - hence why most folks go for the 99 RON brews from Tesco and/or Shell.

I've just looked at my flap and the sticker states:"Min 95 RON Super Premium".
It's a UK car first registered in March 2007.

Mine also does - but it also has 98 RON Super Plus Premium in BIGGER letters.
Mine is also a 2007 model year.

Mine doesn't have this. They probably ran out on the day mine was built and slapped on a sticker from a 1.4. They also forgot to fit xenons, an ashtray and a ko4.
Useless German/Turkish arbeiters.

Why can shell just make it 100ron, nice big round number and we get that little bit more power.
-
Our fuel still has twigs in it! Best we get is total excellium / shell super 97 (we don't get vpower because they're not shell branded stations) dead handy for running ecu tunes developed for 98+ron :(
