Change the headunit for a decent aftermarket one (RNS510 has the same crappy 4x20w amplifier inbuilt like any other factory Golf HU) uprate door speakers with sound deadening and add a seperate subwoofer .

Well if your staying OEM you probably have the best head unit. Spend a bit (500 or so) and you could have a great double din from alpine, clarion, pioneer etc.

Speakers are a big let down on the mk5. Although all cars have grilles for 3 speakers in each door, most only have the tweeter and mid bass units fitted.

Going for 3 way replacements would be the first move with a mid in the factory location and some well placed sound damping measures inside the door card.

Hertz, Focal and JL do kits that fit.

Can't comment on the first 2 but I have the JL C5 653 set and they sound great.

Was looking to keep my head unit as I like the oem look.
Would not changing the speakers  and fitting a amp make much difference.

If your keeping the 510 I wouldn't spend massive amounts as your not going to get the benefit. A nice budget or used amp and speakers will give you an upgrade, and the sound deadening will also help.

Sub will fill things out, though the best sub set ups are the ones you can't hear ;)

Around £500 is this enough or do I need to spend more?

Ideally if you want better sound you need to change your headunit as people have said above. Door speakers and a sub would be enough but for maximum benefit you'd wanna run two amps, one for the speakers and one for the sub. I'm sure people are going to disagree but this is coming from my friend who owns studio in car as I was going for the same set up. They're one of the best in the business when it comes to audio.

Speak to car audio security as they can point you in the right direction  and what sound system best suits you  :happy2:

No idea how it all works together but this lot will be around your budget.

Dynamat extreme door kit
JL 4 ch amp 360/4
JL boxed sub CP110 W0v3
Focal 165AS3

Personally though I would get the door speakers and a new head unit first...

Save a lot of money and don't buy dynamat... use some cheaper ebay stuff works perfectly fine.

I agree Dynamat is very expensive for what it is. I have some skinz in my doors and used dynamat on previous cars and there's nothing in it really. My worry on the cheapo stuff is knowing how flame retardant it is.

Ok thanks for all the help guys.
I will change the speakers fit amp and sub, and see how that goes.
If I'm still not happy will change my head unit.

Get yourself to the Kenwood website my friend, I was the same! I wanted an OEM look but with better sound, and Kenwood have a range that integrates into the dash like a standard unit and they can even be fitted by Volkswagen. Quick trip on eBay yields some great second hand deals.

SOUND DEADENING.

Sorry for shouting - but decent sound deadening can make a huge difference, even with the standard OEM kit.  In my personal opinion, removing the outer skins, and using carefully applied RTV silicone makes a superb sound deadener, and its dirt cheap.

Why would you use RTV sealant?

You can't do this with RTV.. it's not about sealing it, it's about keeping noise from escaping the vehicle and removal/prevention of rattles. Unless I'm mis understanding how you are doing it.

I have only done the inside of my door (removed the door cards) as that's where most of the rattles come from. When I go to upgrade the speakers I may take the door skins off but it's a lot of effort what I can't see to be any gain.

I'm not using RTV to 'seal' anything - I used a thin wavy bead all over any flat surface, and any other surface likely to be subject to promoting harmonic distortion.  Once set, the RTV beads for a high modulus 'rubber-like' substance - and this creates a far better sound-deadening medium than the likes of dynamat.  I learnt this RTV silicone trick years ago from a mate who used to create custom-built speaker enclosures for nightclubs and mobile DJs!  My GTI just has the factory option MFD2 with the 10 speakers - and it made a massive difference.

Anyway - you cant talk - look at your 'supawrap' loft insulation in your doors!  :P  :jumping:   :booty:

Is this RTV stuff like Sugru when it sets?

If it's not flammable it could be a great way of curing creaks and squeaks. My Vx220 suffers huge rattles as all the trim is alloy and hard plastic, be nice to make it sit better without adding lots of weight!

I can't see how that would do much to be honest.

Evening all, one thing that you can do if you want to boost the factory amp you can get a hi gain inline amp, in have put a match p41 in I have the updated eom speakers in the front doors and it has made a big difference to the way the speakers are driven.

Don't have any installed picks but have it under passenger seat and it comes with quad lock wiring loom.
