Yes I no a bit.

Welcome home, TC! Are you now a little brown monkey after your Caribbean trip?
-
I am sporting the roasted Peanut look. :innocent:
-
you mean you look a right t*t ?
and yes its now full ffs
-
-
So who ended up booking?
A few of us MK1 Focus RS will be there! :happy2:
-

Oooh slippy! :driver:
-
Who's booking early December. I quite fancy it myself as I'm off that week.
-
I could be up for it. I did Donny in December last year, sleet on the track first thing and hovering around 0 degrees.
Fair enough it isn't balls out speed like in summer, but you'll learn a lot about the car and have a lot of fun to boot if the weather is a bit poo. Don't necessarily consider it a bad thing.
Lift off powerslides FTW!
-
amended original post , now booked for 5th Dec 09 ......... :pomppomp:
-
this weekend :happy2:
-
I was there on Friday afternoon - beware that Druids doesn't dry out and the leaves off the trees have made it really greasy.
You'll have a good day :happy2:
-
cheers tony :happy2:
still looks like spaces if you wanted to come too :innocent:
show us how its done
-
I've mothballed the old girl for winter now.
Have you booked any instruction? If I'm free I can being my lid and show you the way around.
-
not prebooked but was hoping to get some on the day :happy2:
the more the merrier :happy2:

....Sounds just like the Nordschleife!
-
I must be jinxed... would have gone, but the plumber has just told me that I will need to spend 300 quid to get the central heating boiler part replaced.
It's either the track day or the kids and missus go cold over winter! :sad1:
-
obvious, get them all warm coats and come on down :pomppomp:
I am however a tad concerned about the weather :surprised:
-
my thoughts exactly, where jumpers. thats what winters all about
-
I wanted to pop down to this, just to soak up the track day atmosphere. But it looks like Christmas shopping will be taking over!
Hopefully I can buy it all online and see you there, we'llsee!
-
Can spectators come...and how much would it be for that?
-
would have thought so, as TC said he was coming, and he also met up with tony when he was last there.
cost no idea
-
Spectating and entry is free on track days, depending on who is running it there may or may not be a charge for passenger rides. MSV do, Circuit Days don't.
Only rule is under 16s are not allowed on the pit wall.
-
....
I wish Oulton Park was closer!
-
There's some lovely village pubs nearby that have B&B, Robin. Nice drive back through the Welsh mountains on Sunday....
-
^^^^
> Bristol > Severn Bridge > Hereford > Shrewsbury route?
About 5 hours so I'd have to drive up Friday and back home Sunday - I can't do this weekend anyway but I think you've just persuaded me to do another time (and when the weather is better, though I don't mind the wet).
:happy2:
-
I'm gonna have to bail out. Missus has hijacked my weekend. Got to do some domestic chores and sort out the central heating.
Hope you all have fun - I know I won't be... :sad1:
-
That'd do for the way up, Robin but you'd go back through Wales taking in the likes of the EVO triangle (youtube it) and the other stunning roads - think the 'ring, but about a hundred miles long.
John,
A bit of reading up for you. I hasten to add this is only my take on how to do it - you may find different lines work better for you. Let the instructor show you before using mine and see what you prefer?

Old Hall:
Braking zone is a little bumpy and the car will squirm around, let it run wide on exit and stay hard left down to.
The Avenue:
It looks straight on a map, it isn't. There's a blind right-hander half way down and it's a leap of faith, as you crest it, turn right and aim for the marshal hut of Cascades. DO NOT lift.
Cascades:
Brake killer as it's steeper than it looks. Nice long corner with far more grip than you think and possibility of massive exit speed up Lakeside.
Island:
Brake before, be back on the power at the turn in and keep it down. It'll push you out wide and then you'll come in straight for Shell's braking zone.
Shell (banked):
Various styles, I go high then turn in hard half way round to get the apex, slow in fast out. Power all the way out if you get the camber hooked up.
Foulstons & Hill Top chicane:
Right hander, keep it down. Exit is everything on the chicane, aim to be hitting 90 when you pass the marshal's post.
Knickerbrook:
You'll be carrying a lot of speed so be careful, too fast in and you've knackered the lot. Dab your brakes to get the nose into the 2nd right hander.
Clay Hill:
If it's dry, you should be able to get up without lifting. If not, be careful at the crest as it'll go light.
Druids:
If it's dry, it's epic fun. Imagine the track is split into 4 lanes, you want to be in the 2nd of the left | | | | for entry. It's blind and you won't see the apex until you're virtually around it, you just turn in and wait. It'll start off around 12 foot away, but the kerb will eventually come to you, then nail it down the dip.
Lodge:
Very hard. 3rd gear and throw it uphill at the apex, let it settle and then bury it. Too much and it'll spit you left and you'll be all over the place. You'll feel you've got it right when the compression in the dip is enough to make you feel sick!
-
thanks tony :happy2:

Hey!! Oulton sounds very exciting! :jumpmove: That's an extremely useful insight, Mike aka tony_d.
I'm afraid that airfield tracks such as Bedford don't excite me one little bit! Ask TC, he'll confirm that I won't know which way to go! I'd love to do the full GP Silverstone though.
Oulton Park, Nordschleife + Spa (combined trips) are on my list for 2010.
-
It's a hard track, but one of the finest in the UK.
-
WOW I'm beat, had an amazing time, TopCat came along and tony made an appearance later on.
What an incredible experience , I loved it :notworthy:
bigger writeup to follow but heres the pics. (I paid for all the ones of my car )

Fantastic photos...was the cover on one of the fog lights deliberately taken off? :driver:
-
^^^ It's so the towing eye can be pre-attached in case he put's it in the kitty litter :happy2:
Normal for a track day.
-
The grin on John's face said it all when I arrived....
This is a great shot.

I only made it down to Oulton for the afternoon, and when i turned up it was packed out. there was a lot of serious track cars out playing.
I am glad it wasn't my awaited, first experience of circuit driving as i think i would have been very intimidated. :scared:
It was great to watch though and the variety of cars out there was great. Quite a few Mk2's :pomppomp:
-
Ha ha, you'll be surprised what a GTI will keep up with, TC!
Book a sessioned event next year, DO IT!
-
I will be on track next year, no worries about that.
-
Looks like you had a damn fine day John :jumpmove:
I'm going to be doing quite a few trackdays next year and Oulton park is quite near, so will definitely be getting a visit
We need a bigger write-up too :jumping:
-
....
john_o - Your enthusiasm and pleasure from the day really shines through your post!
Doubtless you'll be there on track at Oulton Park one day when I manage to get there. :drinking:

RR you need to add brands hatch to your track list, its awesome. I did silverstone about 4 years ago in a xr2i and i dont think it was as good as brands.

....Yes, the full circuit of Brands looks very good and it's a great environment. I've been there spectating many, many times over the years but that first Paddock Hill Bend after the start looks really scary - More so than the famous Eau Rouge at Spa. It's very fast, downhill and blind - I'd want tuition!

I did exactly that on my first lap. I was on an XR and RS owners club track day, and ended up getting tuition for free somehow, and won a snap on tool set for most improved first timer

should have done this

hmm that sounds inviting dan any chance of inluding a golf in on that bearing in mind my misses is a member of SCN ?! :innocent:
-
thanks for all the positive comments guys :happy2:
car performed brilliantly, despite me doing all most continuous laps all day .......
I took instruction £25 after my sighting laps as feel it was required.
Oulton was wet (but dried later on) and its much higher speed than I expected (I recall around 115mph on the speedo before braking for the chicane :surprised:)
ESP was left on all day (prudent), and auto corrected the car on 2 occasions when the back end stepped out
(very slick this VW software)
my recently upgraded front brakes (crossdrilled S3 OE kit from DaveB) performed faultlessly :happy2:
Im only just back from a day trip to Northampton way, but needless to say Im still buzzing from the day.
I can thoroughly recommend Oulton park and trackdays.co.uk for a amazing day out. my entire body aches today from the sheer amount of physical excertion reqd yesterday :surprised:
full review in progress.
-
anyone can come as its not an SCN only day :)
16 of us are booked up so far just this weekend!
