So today i decided to go to the dealers to take a look at the new golf R , they had 2 , a black 5 door of more interest to me a white 3 door after a good look round and a test drive ..... I really dont like them , the drive is as expected fantastic but i dint like the look of the car from pretty much any angle the seats are nice and supportive but they look and feel horrible !!!
So after spending a good few hours and another test drive i left a deposit on this .....

that's stunning!
-
Wow congratulations :congrats:
A worthwhile upgrade from the MK5. Think I'll be going for a MK7 GTI in a few years
-
Are the R and the GTi really that different. Apart from the lower front spoiler and quad pipes they are almost identical. Also, aren't the seats pretty much identical also as is the rest of the interior
You have to wonder about the rationale for hauling around a 4 wd drivetrain as in most cases it is not needed. If you really do need 4wd then you are probably going too fast for the conditions :driver: in the real world
Nice GTi though and enjoy it
-
I like the MK7 GTI too and at the moment not many about . Several on the 2nd Hand market too . Can't justify £30k for my 2-3000 miles a year .
-
 Corker
-
Love it! Performance pack and santiagos, perfect! :happy2:
Is it tungsten or limestone?
-
Little but lots of details on the R are alot different to the gti and i dont like any of them , the seats are are horrible the bolsters are nt too bad but the centers feel and look like cheap pvc i m mot keen on the piano black bits on the interior
As for the outside imo it looks like a standard golf thats been to halfords/ripspeed !!
Beddie , performance pack , 19" s , leather , winter pack , acc . No nav or keyless entry but i can live with out them lol
Yes its limestone , love my carbon but im hoping this will be a bit easier to keep gleaming , its lighter than it looks on pics , half way between carbon and silver , the colour sold it to me :happy2:
-
Nice spec Ian, just enough as they are loaded as standard compared to a mk6! :happy2:
Limestone is a lovely colour, looks great on the gti with the black and red accents

Cheers , ill have a few mk6 bits for sale soon not sure if you might be interested , vw racing intake and oem led no plate lights c/w kufotec resistors
-
Sadly the intake won't fit mine mate :sad1: and it came with the OEM led lights
-
No worries mate , got the carbon transferred splitter and diffuser but would need oem parts to put back on
Forgot the 35 is tfsi :surprised:

Yeah the 35 is a bit of a dinosaur in the engine department now!
-
How much has the 2.0 ko4 lump changed? All I know is they don't require HPFP for good power & they are more prone to oil starvation?

Only downside to the mk6 i was waiting for the timing chain to slip every time i started it !! Sounds stupid but thats one of the reasons im changing out of warrentee in june , only fault i can say though mk6 is a great car

The lump in the ed35 is just a regular CDL ko4, the mk7 2.0 is quite different to the TFSi based motors from what I've read and iirc the range now uses IHI turbos like the TSi motor in the mk6 did, not sure what turbo the mk7 R/s3/Cupra engines use though?

That's the only reason I didn't go for a regular mk6 gti instead of the 35, quite fancied the better economy and low down torque of the tsi motor but didn't want to risk the timing chain issues!
-
Congratulations mate, stunning upgrade enjoy! :happy2:
-
I think the GTI looks a lot better than the R (same with the mk6)... whilst I appreciate one of the joys of having a fast golf is keeping it understated, makes no sense to me that the R is so bland in comparison. I'd still love an R though, but it's not like you've made a bad choice - enjoy!

Been to seat dealers today , spanner in works !!!!!!

Yeah!

A lot more for less money , need to think !!
-
The leon inside is a massive improvement over the old one feels same as mk 7 gti with better seats , basically you get golf R performance with a gti chassis and you keep a few £ k in your pocket !!!

You're welcome to come around for a brew when you make your purchase.

My cousin has a 1.8tsi FR and the interior and equipment in that is fantastic for the price, led headlights are ace btw! The Cupra deserves to sell by the boat load imo!

Good job I read the rest of the thread before posting. As you were after a fwd I was going to suggest this very thing. :happy2:
-
Update , drove the 5 door leon cupra 280 today ..... Its brilliant , its got golf r power in a tighter version of the golf gti with performance pack ! It just feels more special than the gti more driver focused
Ive made excuses and got my vw deposit back
Seat offered me more for my golf than vw did with out seeing it !! Seat staff are real people compared to vw morons !!
Test drive a 3 door on monday :driver:

I was going to post well done but you have changed your mind,my workmate drives a cupra and he harps on and on and on about how good the new ones are all the time,I guess I need to start listening to him.

Golf R performance except for off the line speed or in wet conditions
Cupra 280 0-60 5.7s, Golf R quoted 4.9s (although been tested in wet at 4.7s).
In gear acceleration above 40mph are very similar.
Had I not got such a got such a good deal on the R I would have considered the Seat (apart from the depreciation fears!)
-
The depreciation is the only concern i have about the seat :sad1:
-
VWs do tend to hold their value better...but they do cost more as well lol

A lot of track test comparisons on line at the minute say the leon is quicker than the R , dont really bother me cause i dont spend much time on the limit , if i do track days use some one elses car ! Lol
-
Whilst I've yet to drive a 7R I can say that after driving the Cupra the Golf has a hard act to follow, the Cupra is seriously impressive! :happy2:
Plus it doesn't come with the unbelievably large chip you'll need if you sign up to the r forum
-
You do get whopping discounts off Seats to ease that depreciation fear.

I managed £3697.34 discount on a DSG Cupra with nothing more than an email to DTD, Seat Stoke to supply the car if wanted via DTD all for the princely sum of £24.3K, not bad imo! :happy2:
-
£5000 discounts were mentioned through broker4cars on the Cupra 280.
Very impressive cars but luckily my test drive was in the wet and reminded me why I wanted AWD so the decision was an easy one and I'm back onto the Golf 7R's again.
Limestone Grey FTW !!!
-
I love those wheels, they're lovely Mk7s :happy2:

Got me thinking now. I was looking at the MK7 GTI after my MK5.
Might be paying a visit to seat!!!!
-
Update 2 ! Went to view / drive the 3 door cupra today , very good car but no discounts through the dealers and i can see depreciation hitting quite hard on a new car so was bending back towards the golf .....
Till i test drove a TT RS , any one who has droven one will know how they are lol
Deal done !
-
I've recently drove both the r and gti, and I've got to agree I think I like the gti looks wise better, but I still think the r is a very good looking car, saying that though after driving the R I couldn't buy the gti.
-
Also had a close up and personal with a golf 7 R and ive realised what spoils the look for me .... The 19" rim design dont suit the car they look much better with the 18" wheel design

Totally agree with you there. The 7R looks better with the contrast of the machined 18's
Limestone curveball ...........

That grey is HORRID.
-
It looks good in the flesh , pics dont do it any justice
-
It's a very dusty, Orangey Grey. I will let you know my thoughts when I see it in the flesh, I'm not a white lover, but it's the best colour I've seen so far for the Golf R.
-
I think the R will grow on people i seen it with the 18" wheels and it looks lots better vw should make that design in 19"
I drove the TT RS and it in a different league to the R the gti or the leon cupra cost roughly same as gti and cupra but some one else has been hammered with the depreciation :happy2:
-
very nice, my dad got the GTD a few weeks back. really nice place to be

I originally wanted LSG but after seeing one in person it looked beige, decided to go easy option and went with white with 18's (also not a fan of 19's).
I was originally looking at the sensible option of a VRS Combi DSG, but after seeing the lease deals on the 7R (Only £20pm more) it was a no brainer and I will be back in a Golf (No chip needed either, I joined the R forum to get more info as at the time there was nothing much on here )
-
How about this for the R, looks good in the grey with black wheels;

I think this owner has got it just right.
