Title: Anyone own a 2009 tdi?
Post by: Baz300 on April 13, 2014, 06:03:20 pm
I just want to see what the owners manual state for the timing belt changes

Been looking at sciroccos and golf gtd's and none seem to have the timing belt changed.

The ones at dealers they are willing to fit a new belt for me but not pay VW to do it and the private sales think I'm trying to pull a fast one

I've got a 2010 CR170 TDI.

What mileage is the car you're looking at?
I'll do mine by 60k ish regardless of what any manual says, but then I'm someone to air on the side of caution rather than run-risk.

Looked at a few between 40 and 60k miles

Most tend to be 2009s in my price range so going by what VW say should of been done last year.

Just a worry buying a £12k-£14k car that someone has scrimped on.

That logic should apply to any car ultimately, but full service history is a must. Dealer SH isn't essential for me but someone competent or recognised of course.
You've got less comeback going private. To add assurance, can you find one in budget from a dealer Baz?

US service history is 130k for timing belts by the way just saying.

It's 80k in the UK.

I got as far as the first line where it mentioned kwik fit. That would be enough for any sane person to walk (or run) past this one as quickly as possible. I wouldn't trust kwik fit to put a tyre on the right way round, never mind letting them have a full car to bugger about with.

As for the cambelt. No point getting into any arguments or discussions with sellers about it. Just allow yourself the time and money to have it done yourself when you've bought the car. If a dealer is prepared to have it done to clinch a sale then rest assured it'll get a new belt at most, and no rollers or tensioner. And he'll correctly say that the belt has been replaced. However, there'll be no warranty on the belt replacement job, just the usual dealer comeback on the car as a whole. If you have the belt changed yourself at a main dealer (for example) then YOU get 2 years warranty on the job, and the assurance that comes with it.

Also, private sellers won't be having the belt done to clinch a sale, so not even worth raising the matter with them.

It's more the way the car has been looked after is what I'm worried about.

That's why I'm asking what the book states for a cam belt change. If the book states 80k miles without a date then in my opinion the seller isn't neglecting the car as they are going by what the book states.

Cheap and mismatched tyres have put me off quite a few too

The kwick fit servicing has put me off that one

I'm not personally bothered about full VW history as long as it's been done by a known Indy but I also have to think about selling the car in a few years.

I am sure in 2009 that it changed to 5 year intervals, but a call to VW UK will get you a definite answer in minutes.

I had a 59 plate and the book said 80k or 4 years IIRC

Apparently Audi claim its 80k or 5 years

I have had tyres changed by Halfords before and they did a good job tbf, didnt scratch me alloys

BUT

I wouldnt let them touch my engine, so I would stay clear of that one.

After September 2009 it changed to 5 years as they changed to a better composite

Been watching this thread with interest as I have a GTD which has the CR170 engine, Mine will be 4 years old in October this year (35k miles) so I was Looking at a bill this year to get the belt /kit changed so if this can be clarified via email or something from VW stating it is 5 years not 4 that would be great  :happy2:

I asked my local dealer about it and they said 4 years

I wouldn't worry too much about what Seat dealers tell you. Mine tried to convince me that my camshaft needed tensioning.  :rolleye:

No, it was on a TDI BKD engine. In any case, I'm not sure there's any possible way a camshaft would need tensioning.

I know the TFSI runs a chain between the 2 cams and that could require a new tensioner

Cambelts and cam chains require tensioning. A camshaft (and they were very specific about this being the camshaft) can't be tensioned.
