Title: Not another leak... :-(
Post by: em2evol on April 13, 2014, 08:31:02 pm
Hi guys

Got a message from my neighbour pointing out this earlier:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz186%2Fem2evol%2F10262021_10154049377600074_4032478905302074206_n_zps87d59ee9.jpg&hash=1948b9bef8bf67b075d93b956a1b2e32d77807ae)

So went to check under the car (had been parked for approx 30 mins) and found this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz186%2Fem2evol%2FWP_20140413_012_zps2cf0bdde.jpg&hash=bd0214adb6e0bc226879480007259062d022cb6b)

Underneath all I could see was this:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fz186%2Fem2evol%2FWP_20140413_013_zpsa7f231ad.jpg&hash=18f81fa7c39a20ea1bb1701577025fc1d8d812ba)

and in the engine bay (looks dry but was soaked in oil to the right of the engine):

The only thing I can add is that I noticed it smelt awful earlier after I'd taken it down the motorway 20 miles, smelt a bit like when new tarmac is laid and gets rolled over... I checked the oil level and it's at max still at least. Not been topped up since last service over a month ago (when I assume it was changed).

I know it's hard to diagnose from photos and my crap description but would anyone be able to tell me what it could / is likely to be?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Em

Smells awful - have you smelt gearbox fluid before? If it smells like stale piss then that might be the fluid.

Hey thanks. Looks like the right kind of area for the gearbox (I assume) so could be that. Would it be a serious problem if it was the gearbox?
